Realm of the Elderlings Mafia A specialty game for 18 Players
Reviewed (and reimagined) by D_V and Osieorb18
This, more than anything else, is what I have never understood about your people. You can roll a dice, and understand that the whole game may hinge on one turn of a die. You deal out cards, and say that all a man's fortune for the night may turn upon one hand. But a man's whole life, you sniff at, and say, what, this nought of a human, this fisherman, this carpenter, this thief, this cook, why, what can they do in the great wide world? And so you putter and sputter your lives away, like candles burning in a draught.
This is a flavorful game which will contain spoilers for the Realm of the Elderlings novels by Robin Hobb.
Game Specific Rules
Vitality: Vitality is a player's life force. If a player reaches 0 Vitality (abbreviated as 0V) they will die. There are several abilities including the Night Kill that may cause vitality gains and losses. Vitality gains will be processed before losses if both abilities have the same priority. Vitality payments are an exception and are resolved at the highest priority.
The Skill: The Skill is an addictive and hereditary magic. All players have the anytime ability The Skill, unless their role states otherwise. A player with The Skill may use The Skill by paying any amount of Vitality to open a one-way private chat with another player for a number of phases equal to the Vitality spent, for example a player with 4V would be able to create a one way chat on day 1 that lasts until the end of day 2 by paying 3V. This ability may be used at any time. Each player may only open one chat at a time this way unless their role states otherwise. The Skill may be used in addition to any other actions.
Robin Hobb - Town Author
Home is people, not a place.
You are Robin Hobb, writer of these wonderful tales, making this game possible.
You start with 1 Vitality.
Writing: Night Action - You may spend 1V to begin the game.
You win when all threats to town are eliminated.
General Rules:
1. Be good to each other. Follow all the forum rules, but mostly be good to each other and we'll all be just fine.
2. Play to the spirit of the game. Don't try to circumvent the hidden information. It's supposed to be a game of hidden information. Don't try to get around that, whether by copying your PM, editing posts, or other nefarious means. The game doesn't work if you bypass the fact that some information is supposed to be hidden.
3. Please try to be active and post. I will be requiring at least one substantive post every 48 hours and more is vastly preferred. I will accept standing absences over weekends if notified in advance. And I will aim to not have any deadlines fall on the weekend.
4. If you have a problem with another player's behavior or a question about a ruling please message me. I will answer within no more than 10 hours.
5. I reserve the right to punish as I see fit for breaking any of these rules.
6. Have fun!
Mafia is a game of uninformed majority versus and informed minority.
The villagers (uninformed majority) are trying to eliminate all the enemies from their midst. The mafia are trying to tie or outnumber the town.
Day phases are made up of voting for players to "condemn" (remove from the game and learn the alignment of that player). In this game a player is condemned when a majority of players (with 12 alive this would be 7) vote for 1 player. That ends the day phase immediately and begins a twilight phase until the mod (myself!) is able to reveal that players alignment and start the night phase.
During the night phase the mafia team is able to kill 1 player of their choosing and any players with abilities may use them.
This process repeats till all threats to the town are dead or the town has lost control of the vote to the mafia.
