Pretty sure we lose if EtR is town, yeah, but I'm going to do a reread anyway. Phone posting from school right now, I'll probably start tonight when I get home.
I mean, I think they're probably partners. Lynching EtR has the small upside that if he's somehow town and we don't lose outright then Ruma is probably also town. Unless you think wolf!Ruma derailed town!EtR's wagon onto DV for some reason.
There's a world where EtR is scum and Ruma isn't, though, where Ruma is a villager and just wanted DV dead. Like, wolf!Ruma implies wolf!EtR and vice-versa, but town!Ruma doesn't necessarily imply town!EtR the same way town!EtR implies town!Ruma. That's why I wanted to lynch EtR yesterDay.
I don't really think the order matters too terribly but if you think Ruma is a wolf you should also think EtR is, it's the only way I can wrap my head around the DV lynch.
I explained three timesc exactly what went through my head and he said 'no, your wrong'. Literally saying what I thought wasn't what I thought. Like, there's no way to defend against that. So ******* lynch me and realise that he can't read minds. He can make assumptions but defending the point (which people were misunderstanding) means ***** all about defending the person. I don't give a single **** if he thinks otherwise. That's what I thought at the time and still believe. I could change this stance if I thought it'd help, but it won't. So whatever. Lynch me for a person who won't actually make an argument that can be defended against. I gave up cause he wouldn't listen. This isn't a sucmmy defensive. No, this is 'town who just doesn't want to deal with *****'. I'd rather just give up defending teen self vote like & _V did.
If I wasn't taking responsibility for my words, WHY WOULD I KEEP REPEATING THEM.
*******. Yeet.

Yeah, I dunno. I reread what I wanted to and I still think it's EtR/Ruma + 1.
I'll be here for around an hour probably if anyone wants to chat.
Kind of skeeved out by Vaimes' bloodlust in mylo and there's almost certainly at least one wolf voting EtR right now. Unless it's, like, EtR/Kami/Ruma, which seems... unlikely.

Mod thoughts to come tomorrow when I'm less tired.
So, I really thought I would be caught on my complete lack of interaction with tom. But very few people were pushing tom. I think that's what let me skate - it would have been easy for a Tom flip to drag me down with it.
I have so many thoughts but so many of them I biased by having been spoiled for ages. First thing I want to shout out is Kami and Silver playing under the radar without going full on lurk. KA in particular did a really nice job of not being at the center of discussion despite having every reason to be.
The guy was widely believed to be a neutral and there was never a concerted "we need to sort this guy before what would be mylo because it's too late then." Which is incredible given that he never even claimed to be a neutral! I couldn't help comparing the level of attention Az drew in Pirates for his post 1 neutral survivor claim to this widely believed to vaguely be a neutral but no clue what his wincon role was by Kami. Az was the center of attention day in and day out as people tried to decide if they wanted to trust him to townside or to sort him early. Here it just all fell to the wayside.
Next tom is a master of diversion. Not so much in distracting people from what matters (though he's great at that as well) but in finding things to go down a rabbit hole about and speculate on from a position of ignorance. He's already very good at hiding his informed mindset but almost without fail he'll find a "thing" to latch onto and do a genuine deep dive that reads villagery because it's honest hunting, just not for scum. My favorite thing about it is it's just him because he does it as town as well. He just seems to have a curiosity to take ideas to their extremes and talk it out that really helps his scum game.
Other thoughts the big pivot points this game to me were: KA's neutral acceptance, the no majority days, and the lack of a decision to probe at the ghostbusters. For all the flavor gaming that happened until the last day there was never really a serious discussion that 1 of the ghostbusters was very likely to be scum. Not really due to flavor but just because having all 4 roles do the same thing all be the same alignment just wasn't a likely mod decision. I can't really articulate it anymore but the design of the role screamed that it was a 3-1 split. So town never really deciding to find the probable scum ghostbuster feels like a lost opportunity. Especially with there really only being two who were in doubt with my death and HR's towniness.
The two flipless days killed town motivation as far as I could tell. The first one especially. With the tensions that were happening town really needed a flip to get it out of it's rut and let new debate breathe. And when it didn't happen and the next day was a repeat of the prior it just killed any creativity. From there people largely had their walls and stuck to them. A few people had different ideas later (Vez got there on tom the last day, and Vaimes sort of solved it before giving up on his idea then as well) but seemed willing to just default back to priors and get it over with. If there hadn't been two days without info I think there would have been a lot more enthusiasm down the stretch.
On a similar note I think the midgame tensions did the same. When people are told over and over again they're playing badly it kind of reduces people's willingness to put their neck out for a read. Which if town is on the right track pushes people towards scum (see Rodemy D1) but demoralizes and get's town stuck in a rut if on the wrong track (see DV day 2 and 3). This game really suffered from a lack of lateral thinking. I think every day felt pretty inevitable by about halfway through. I know some people will credit that to long phases but I've seen many games on here drastically change directions late in phases (but before last minute chaos), so my hypothesis is that the tension/demoralization led to it here.
Anyway in my eyes MVP is easy this game, tom won and was a huge reason his team won.
Also want to give major credit to EtR and zdtsd for playing really well in their first game back in a long time and first here respectively. I honestly have no clue why EtR had as many scum reads as he did. Apart from not targeting me I though ztdsd did a great job choosing his targets despite not blocking any kills.
Lastly thanks to cantrip for hosting! The flavor was super fun and the ghostbusters role design was really cool! I had a ton of fun playing D1 and then hanging out in the spec/dead chat. Really fun game!
Oh would you look at that. The person who was getting away with a neutral belief, while trying to act in 'townies interest' was scum.
Did he ever even claim neutral? I was pretty sure he had "ignored" it and was acting like a neutral who was half sort of trying to pretend to be townie still.

(A neutral would claim to be neutral if he could win with either time, be night killed by mafia due to concerns if not). The only likely scenario was he was scum using neutral cover, but I had no credibility by that time. Meh.

Well looks like I was wrong about most things this game. I did come around on Tom being scum but it was too late and I was worried that changing my mind would make me look even worse.

Do I need to do anything special to get into the discord? I’m getting an expired invite.
This was reasonably fun to spectate, I hope some people have a few takeaways, and the no lynches were crippling, the fear of “ending a day too early” should never be so prevalent that it robs the day of a lynch.
But definitely some fun play, I certainly hope to see you new/returning players in more games (signups for Death in the Family Mafia are open, hint hint!).

@Riku yeah and it was a correct read but Kami still never had the screws put to him. You could have been more forceful but there were definitely worse handlings than yours.
On the last day you were much more forceful telling hoghroller that you weren't going to engage than you were pushing your scum read. Still better than letting KA run free without any pressure though.

So to be frank, Grape sarnath'd a lot of my mod thoughts (and he did so with more clarity and probably less bias than I would have, so I'll just tip my hat in his direction on much of it), but here are a few other elements:
First off, I have to agree that Tom was scum MVP. It takes a certain skill to dance around a game the way he did here, and it took a long time for anyone to levy serious suspicion against him, and practically no one ever pushed against him with more than a naked vote. Might have been different if Silver or Kami had flipped, but as it is, this is textbook solid scumming.
On the town side, I feel like several players had moments that stood out, even if no one played a spotlight game. In particular, Rhand sent me a PM after he had caught up reading the first three pages that basically said "Kami/Rodemy/Tom scum, but only if Rod is scum". I think it was a pretty solid stroke of luck for scum that their plan to delay the kill on Rhand got messed up; had he lived, I think he would have wreaked some havoc.
Mod Lessons Learned
1) Redirection effects are hard, and hard to keep track of. I mean, they really shouldn't be, but I still managed to mangle several communications early game, and while they didn't have any severe consequences (that I'm aware of), they could have, and my players deserve better. Something to work on in the future.
2) Replacements gonna happen whether I like it or not. I despise this one, and this game has reinforced my resolve to only commit to a game if I'm actually going to commit, and once in, ensure that I participate (and if I can't, not let the game drag on while I hopefully get my act together). Some day I will have a replacement-free game, and it will be GLORIOUS!!! ...but I have to come to grips with the likelihood that there will likely always be players who need to replace out, which leads me to...
3) I can't be timid about modkills, when appropriate. To me, modkills are the antithesis of fun in Mafia. They leave an unpleasant taste in everyone's mouth. A team is negatively impacted, and the impact has nothing to do with the player's/team's skill. And I always fear that the remaining players might misinterpret a modkill as indicative, especially if multiple slots are up for death and/or one slot gets a replacement while the other gets modkilled. Even worse than a modkill due to inactivity/lack of replacement is a modkill because of insults/flaming, which this game suffered from a little, unfortunately. I feel like I let it go on a little too long/gave too many chances. I know that this is in part because I generally am not as impacted by personal attacks on me, but that doesn't mean I should let players run roughshod over each other. I plan on being a lot stricter on this in the future.
4) I really, really need to prep flavor in advance if possible (all/most of it before the game even starts). Flavor this game mostly sucked, imo. Votecounts with movie quotes were ok, but Day start/end scenes were meh. I didn't even have a very concrete feel for what I was going to do going in other than the whole "sucked into the containment unit" concept, and then once I started writing scenes, they just felt really bland and generic. Doubly frustrating because I write as a hobby, and I just couldn't bring myself to put forth the effort that you guys deserved. In part, I think that was because it's hard to improve on/mimic the comedic writing of the source material, but in all honesty, it was my lack of preparation and effort. Sorry.
5) Murphy's Law of Game Design is a thing? As named by Proph in the spec chat, it seems like every time I come up with a really fun, likely impactful role (such as the Mafia Architect in this game), that slot dies D1/N1 and I never get a good sense of whether the role was balanced or batguano crazy or what. Just means I need to design more crazy roles to increase the likelihood that at least one survives to be properly assessed. Consider yourselves warned.
On that note, I'd like to ask for general feedback on the setup and balance. There's a fairly good discussion headed by DV in the spec chat. He feels like the game was scum-sided; I think it was more balanced (even with the scum victory), but I'd love to hear other perspectives. Similarly, I'd like to know if there were any power roles that people really enjoyed playing or really despised playing so I can lean toward more of the former and less of the latter.
Personally, I really enjoyed the reactions generated by the Form of Gozer announcement. I know mods should design to their players and not for their own entertainment, but the conversation generated by that moment in the game was pretty much all that I was hoping for, so please pardon my self-indulgence. Hopefully it was fun for you, too.
Finally, I'm pretty sure Grape's Hedgelord status is one of the best things to come out of this game; thumbs up to Tom for coining it, and props to Grape for adopting it. I almost replaced "Grapefruit21" with "Hedgelord" in the votecounts, but I didn't want players to read into it and think it was a game effect or anything.
Thanks to all of you for making my first big game memorable. I don't know when my next game (Snipe Hunt Mafia) will fire, but I hope you consider joining when it does. I promise it has plenty of setup innovation (and I've even started on the flavor already, so...bonus if you care about that kind of thing).
I think the correct lynch today is etr and we can figure riku/tom tomorrow.
