1. This is a game. As such, I expect everyone to obey the general rules of sportsmanlike conduct one would expect in any game, which includes following all forum rules and all the rules below. Keep it fun.
2. Breaking either of the following rules has a strong chance of getting you modkilled, recommended for probation, and/or blacklisted from any game I host in the future:
- Don't edit or delete your posts.
- Don't post after you are dead. Not even a "bah" post.
3. Votes must be in bold, in the form "Vote: Cantripmancer"; unvotes are not necessary, but would be helpful in keeping accurate records, which will lend itself to a more pleasant mafia experience for all.
4. Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. If a deadline is imposed, and no majority is reached prior to it, the day will end without a lynch. Players may also vote "Vote: No Lynch"; a majority of these votes will end the day without a lynch.
5. Once the lynch threshold has been reached, nothing can prevent that lynch. Players may still post during twilight (the period of time after the lynch threshold is achieved but before the lynch scene has been posted).
6. Communication with anyone about this game is restricted solely to posting in this thread, unless your role private message (PM) states otherwise.
7. You may not communicate with anyone (including posting in this thread) during the night unless your role PM states otherwise.
8. Please do not use the "thank/like" feature. Thank you.
9. The moderators for this game are Cantripmancer and Bur. If you have any questions about anything game related, please post the question in the conversation established with your role PM and Bur or I will give you as comprehensive an answer as possible (without negatively impacting the game for you or the other players). Please do not initiate additional PM conversations; this will help ensure that both mods see all communications.
10. If you want to get the mods' attention in-thread, please use bolded text of "Mod:" (i.e. - Mod: Vote count, please, or Mod: What does rule #13 mean?).
11. I understand that real life interferes from time to time, but, just like any game, Mafia requires participation. Players who don't post at least once every 72 hours will be prodded for activity. Players who don't quickly respond to a prod will be replaced (or modkilled if no replacement can be found). If you anticipate being unable to post within the 72 hour time frame, please post a V/LA (Vacation/Leave of Absence) message in the thread (if during the Day) and/or send the mod a PM with that information. A player who has to be prodded three times will be forcibly replaced/modkilled.
Game-Specific Rules
12. At the beginning of each Day, one of the four suits (Spades, Diamonds, Clubs, or Hearts) will be declared trump. That suit stays trump until the beginning of the next Day.
13. The trump designation is selected at random, but for each four-Day cycle, no suit will be chosen twice.
EXAMPLE: Hearts may be declared trump on Day 1, followed by Diamonds on Day 2, and Spades on Day 3. In this case, Clubs will definitely be trump on Day 4, but Day 5 could be any of the four Suits (including Clubs a second time in a row).
14. Abilities with a restriction listed can be used if that restriction is met (see Ability Restrictions & Types, below).
- Of specific note, some abilities have suits listed; these can only be used during a phase when that suit is trump.
- Some abilities don't have a given set of restrictions.
EXAMPLES: Some abilities don't have "Day" or "Night"; these can be used/function during either Day or Night. Some abilities don't list a suit; these can be used/function regardless of which suit is trump.
15. You may quote your rolename, title, card, suit(s), and ability names; everything else must be paraphrased or you run the risk of being modkilled. If you aren't sure if what you want to post is acceptable, please ask the mod; permission is definitely better than forgiveness in this case.
Ability Restrictions/Types
All abilities have restrictions and/or types; this is a comprehensive list:
- Day: Can be used/functions during the Day.
- Night: Can be used/functions during the Night.
- Spades: Can be used/functions when Spades are trump.
- Diamonds: Can be used/functions when Diamonds are trump.
- Clubs: Can be used/functions when Clubs are trump.
- Hearts: Can be used/functions when Hearts are trump.
- Targeted: Requires a PM be sent to the Mod specifying one or more targets.
- Activated: Requires a PM sent to the Mod, but has no targets.
- Pregame: Requires a choice to be made before the game begins, sent to the Mod via PM.
- Passive: Functions continuously (within the framework of any other restrictions).
- Mandatory: Must be used when possible.
- One-Shot: Can only be used once.
- Win Condition: Includes the condition(s) required for the player to win.
1. Deadlines for this game will be: [# of players] + [lynch threshold] = Deadline in days. The maximum length for a Day will be three weeks.
2. Each Day phase will have a deadline. Night phases will last 72 hours until half of the players are dead, at which point they will be shortened to 48 hours. Nights may be shortened further toward the end of the game.
3. During the game, there are up to three deadline extensions available. These extensions may be requested by the players at any time in the thread, and may be granted at my sole discretion. Don't be mad if I say no.
The options are as follows:
A: 24 hours per player OR 7 days, whichever is shorter.
B: 72 hours
C: 48 hours
4. Once a particular extension is used, it cannot be used again that same game.
5. Any number of extensions can be used in the same game Day.
6. If the players do not specify which extension they wish to use (or if there is no consensus on which one to use), I will pick the remaining option highest up on the list.
7. Extensions are appended to the deadline time. There's no need to strategically time when the request is made.
8. At least two players must request an extension for it to be considered.
1. Immunities
2. Controlling another player's actions
3. First strike non-killing actions
4. Gaining actions
5. Losing actions
6. Redirecting / replacement effects
7. Roleblocking
8. Protecting
9. Rescuing / Reviving
10. Sending items or messages
11. First strike killing actions

Quote from Sample Role PM »
Tanarinder, you are:
The Hanged Man, Town Dangler (The Tarot) What's a tarot card like you doing in a game like this? I don't even know what card value you would be, which must make you a Joker. Since I don't allow Jokers or Jesters in any of my games, I'm afraid I'm just going to have to leave you dangling. Card: Joker Suit(s): Diamond, Club Sir Not Appearing in This Game (Night, Targeted, Diamonds): If Diamonds are trump, you may target a player and guess a letter. If you guess three letters that are not in the word I'm thinking of, you will be hanged until dead. Gallow's Revolution (Night, Passive, Clubs): If you manage to guess all five letters in the word I'm thinking of, I'll relent and let you join the game the following Night. If Clubs are trump that Night, you will kill two other random players. You are a Joker, after all. Governor's Pardon (Passive, Win Condition): If all threats to the town have been eliminated, you win (even if you die before that point).
Note: All town win conditions are identical; only the ability name changes from role to role.
All role PMs have been sent out; the game will begin once all players have confirmed via PM conversation.
The door burst open. A dark pair of eyes locked on The Dealer, assessing. The hulk in the doorway finally decided that both the room and the man in it were safe. He shouldered over the threshold, ducking a little to do so.
The Dealer was the first to break the silence. "John Dancer." The small mountain grunted with a nearly imperceptible nod. The Dealer gestured to a chair at the game table. "Have a seat."
Dancer moved across the room, but bypassed the offered chair, instead making a show of looking at a modern Japanese print on the wall opposite the door. After a moment, he turned and leaned up against the wall, arms crossed on his chest.
"Bonjour, gentlemen." An aquiline nose preceded a tall woman cloaked in black and white lace. She strode into the room and practically fell into a chair, splashing melodrama onto the embroidered rug.
"Jacqui Bleu."
The woman smiled from under the brim of her floppy woolen hat. "Oui. But of course. Why else would I be speaking with zis ridiculous French accent, mon ami?" The Dealer gave a small smile of appreciation.
"Is this going to take all night?" Dancer was glaring at an empty spot on the wall, his question addressed to no one. The Dealer hated to leave him hanging, however, so he responded.
"No, Mr. Dancer. But it's going to take more than three rounds, I suspect." The Dealer gave another small smile. "Why don't you make yourself comfortable?"
Dancer grunted again and ambled over to a chair on the end of the table, dragging it around so he could still see a majority of the room. A sudden knock on the door nearly brought him to his feet again, but he settled back reluctantly, uncomfortable.
Two more people walked in. A man in pressed trousers and a crisp blue button-down shirt and a nun in full habit. There's a joke somewhere in there, thought The Dealer. He turned his gaze on the nun first.
"You must be Sister Abilene Christian. And you..."
"Thomas Briggs, Sergeant Major of her Majesty's Royal Canadian Mounted Police, at your service." He promptly pulled one of the two remaining chairs and held it for the nun, who sat down primly. He then took the last chair and sat, properly stiff.
After a moment's pause, The Dealer cleared his throat and began turning over stacks of cards. "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. You came here to play a game, and play you shall. There is a full bar available against the far wall; please help yourselves. But if there are no objections..." No one broke the brief pause. "Let's get down to business.
"As you can see, I have here 13 piles of cards. Four aces, four twos, four threes, and so on, all the way up to four kings." The Dealer swept a hand across the piles, then picked up the four aces. "You may notice that these are not your standard playing cards." Major Briggs leaned in to peer and one eyebrow went up while Jacqui uttered a mild mon dieu under her breath.
"Our fancy tonight is Baker's Dozen, which, if you're unfamiliar, is a game consisting of just 13 cards, one of each rank. I'll randomize each set and extract one of each..." So saying, he deftly pile shuffled the four aces in rapid-fire style, the cards nearly becoming a blur. He then pulled one out and set it aside, face down. Repeating with each set of four, he worked quickly until he had a small stack of 13 cards; the rest of the deck was slid off the table and out of sight.
"Now, three cards to each of you apiece, and the last, the loaf, I keep. Please look at your cards, and when you're ready, we'll begin."
"One moment here," said Major Briggs. "Aren't you going to go over the rules of the game?"
The Dealer offered another small smile. "All you need to know is in the cards themselves; each one has its own unique set of rules you must abide by, but I will certainly address any questions that come up during the course of the game."
A few moments were consumed in thought, during which Sister Christian made a great display of pursing her lips, and John Dancer rose to pour himself a scotch. At one point Jacqui Bleu seemed on the verge of asking a question, but she ended up only shaking her head.
"Very well. If there are no further questions, let's begin."
Great opening post cantrip! I am retiring to bed for the night but noticed an email stating the game had started so I wanted to make an appearance. Looks like I'm the first on the scene, so I'll be back tomorrow to chat with everyone!

I can't say I didn't expect a vote for being the noob to this forum
So I had a couple quick questions, since it appears you guys play mafia a tad different from my home forum. Is it normal that the roles aren't posted on the first page? We typically have a list, and oftentimes even know what they do. So this seems a little foreign to me!
How does the BTSC (behind the scenes contact) work typically at this forum? At mine, if your role allows it, you have it nonstop, but I've seen some places where you can only talk to BTSC partners during the night phase.
Also, I wanted to let everyone know my first couple games here, it may be difficult to fully wrap my head around the way your voting/lynch system works. I am used to games that have 48 hour day deadlines, where your vote cannot change after it's been cast. And you don't need a majority of the alive players to lynch someone, just the most votes at the end of that period.
But in honor of RVS, I'll vote ganderindan, because he snuck in a post before me last night, and I wanted to be first.

Where do you come from?

That information is not usually disclosed unless the game is advertised as an open set-up.

It varies depending on the role & game; if you get one, your role pm should specify.

Paying attention to the vote counts can provide a wealth of insights.

With a slightly embarrassed look on his face, the Dealer said, "My apologies ladies and gentlemen. You're absolutely correct that it would help if you knew what suit was trump, so let me fix that posthaste." The Dealer cracked open a brand new deck of ordinary playing cards, shucking the plastic wrap and letting the cards slide out of the box. Deftly, he performed six table riffle shuffles, bridging effortlessly, then finished with a strip shuffle. With a flourish, he presented the deck to the nun and asked her to cut to a card. She revealed the 7 of Spades.
"Spades," intoned the Dealer, "is trump for the first round of play."
(Mod Note: The card mentioned in the flavor has no bearing on the game except to represent the randomly selected trump suit.)

We're still in RVS, far as I'm concerned. I want to break it but what I want to break it on isn't solid enough yet, IMO. And so we wait.
vote Iso because I'm sure I'll end up scumreading him at some point.
Unless, of course, you're scum - in which case you'll be my best friend. Or if we do that thing we did in Celestial where you help me out Night 1 and I white knight you all game. Either/or.

But we have enough participants to engage with and gain information, don't you think?
How do you propose that we should go about that?
Why do I get the feeling this is a loaded question?
Regardless, for me - it's business as usual. I don't know anyone here or have any preconceived ideas of how people play, so you can probably expect for me to bring some unique insight to the table. Because I will be coming from a different perspective -- namely, without the "but in XYZ game you were bad and you're doing the same thing now". I may also bring some unusual (bad) ideas that don't quite make sense, since I'm used to a different environment. That's all to say, that where iso may feel comfortable sitting back and chilling until everyone has posted, I have some work to do in people watching and interacting and learning behaviors, etc. And if everyone is quiet, well, I can't do that.
I know this is a lot to ask, but for anyone that's up to it, I'd appreciate any sort of short "introduction/bio" post for my benefit. I can start and we'll see if this goes anywhere
I'm blindfaeth -- if you prefer to shorten it, I'm accustomed to BF or blind as well. A little about me - I'm a fairly active player. You can definitely expect me to check in at least once daily, if not more. I don't know if this site has a function where you can see lurkers, but I stay logged in, so you might say something expecting me to respond immediately and not hear from me for hours. I humbly ask you don't suspect me for it - I'm simply still logged in and not looking at my phone. Since I primarily use my phone as the medium to respond (right now being an exception), I'll typically post short but sweet - possibly with typos because of autocorrect - and rarely use multi-quotes. Not because I don't like them, but because they're difficult to use on the phone.
As far as content goes, I primarily follow my gut when hunting for mafia. Again, since the voting here is way different, I'm going to try to pay attention to voting patterns, but I'm not analytical by nature and I refuse to use spreadsheets. So you can expect for a lot of my suspicions to revolve around my interpretation of what agenda I think someone is pushing -- after all, don't most posts have some sort of agenda? Mine with this one is to gather information about people I know little to nothing about.
The Cold Monarch, formally known as the Ice King, and often called in mafia as TCM (though in that aspect, I preferred "TIK"). I am what would be considered in horse racing a "stalker". I am normally not the ring leader, but consistently work behind the scenes, but willing to take charge if lacking. My personality is in constant flux, and am a master of manipulating emotions in text. I try to do a post a day, more if there is an active conversation going on, but normally can come off quite blunt.
I am a curious conundrum on this forum. My early game is relatively weak compared to the rest of my game, but my late game is strong. My town play is not the best, but I believe myself to be one of the scariest scum players on salvation (I would still give Cyan/Kpaca the title before myself, but believe I am somewhere in the top ten). As for scum hunting techniques, I typically look for shifting behaviors, while evaluating how the post appears from both a town and scum mindset.
As it stands, I am curious, how does your day one go? How many posts in does the average day go, and what (in your opinion) ends up being the trigger?
FYI I feel my town play is definitely way stronger than my mafia game. My problem is that I'm often right in my suspicions but bad at building cases and convincing others to vote with me because I work from my gut.
Why do I get the feeling this is a loaded question?
namely, without the "but in XYZ game you were bad and you're doing the same thing now".
We refer to that as meta.

smoke_Killah (formerly red_0mega, if you must shorten it, I prefer smoke or s_K. I started playing Mafia here, 5 years ago; just returned after taking a hiatus right before the site change. I am probably known (if at all) as a bit of a lurker, potentially inflammatory, & stubborn. We shall see if any of that changes now that I am back.
If you want to know about my meta, you should probably ask Iso or Cold Monarch; self-meta is most likely unreliable. That being said, I tend to follow my gut, and when I think that I have found something I usually pursue it relentlessly until I am satisfied. I try to play consistently regardless of alignment, though I admit to being much better as scum; my personality seems to attract more suspicion when I am town

I am a newer addition to these forums as well. I have been playing Mafia since the beginning of this year on MTGS, and for the most part everyone has been really great in terms of helping me out whenever possible. You should find the group here to be helpful and fair, but they will hold you accountable if you mess up. I don't have much to say other than welcome, and if you want to observe my Meta you can look at the last several games here on this site, and you will find all you need to know on me. My two finished games are Deathspeaker and xkcd Mafia.
The Ruleset has been updated with an Order of Operations list. I think this goes without saying, but the presence of an element in that list does not necessarily indicate that an ability with that kind of effect is in this game.

Hi, I'm KittyCupCake. You're welcome to call me Kitty or KCC. I was once known as TheFooFish, in another life. I consider myself to be one of the more flexible mafia players. -You're just as likely to see me watching quietly from somewhat in the background as you are to see me leading the charge. Likewise, I can be a top poster in the game with relentless flurries of brief interactive posts, or I might only stop in every other day with fewer, but substantially larger posts. Sometimes, those differences are a time issue on my end, but more often it's about contributing what I feel the game needs at any given moment.
I have a strong math background and enjoy solving games logically towards the end (either through making plans or processing evidence), but I'm also a bit of a writer, and earlier I prefer looking at word choices and post composition to differentiate between sincerity and pretense. -I've been told I'm one of the stronger town players around here due to a decent track record of catching scum, my thoroughness and clarity in explaining my reads, and an overall inability to get mislynched*.
My scum meta, on the other hand, is virtually non-existent, in my opinion, other than that I have a remarkable talent for only rolling scum in the strangest of situations. -More than half of my scum games included multiple scum factions (which is very different from playing scum in a normal game). I've also replaced into scum roles fairly late in games, and been scum in absurdly broken games (we're talking multiple traitors, the scum having multiple daykills and recruiting abilities, ect.). In fact, I don't believe I've ever played scum in a game, from start to finish, where the game was reasonably balanced and had only one scum faction.
*I have, technically, been mislynced a few times, but those are weird corner cases I tend to not count. I can go over them if anyone's interested, but it's probably not important.

2. Controlling another player's actions
3. First strike non-killing actions
4. Gaining actions
5. Losing actions
6. Redirecting / replacement effects
7. Roleblocking
8. Protecting
9. Rescuing / Reviving
10. Sending items or messages
11. First strike killing actions
12. Killing actions
13. Gathering information
14. Anything else
All role PMs have been sent out; the game will begin once all players have confirmed via PM conversation.
The game has not yet begun; please DO NOT POST!
It is now Day 1! With 12 alive, it's 7 to lynch.
You may now post. Good luck!

Yes, I expect that watching vote patterns could be very telling, so I'll pay attention to them.
By the way, did I miss the part of the post where our host announced the trump suit? I can't locate at a glance..
Did you see that somewhere, or are you just a gambling type of girl?
But seriously, I don't see it announced so I'm assuming it will come later.
I need to get an avatar.
Would you like to wager?

"Spades," intoned the Dealer, "is trump for the first round of play."
(Mod Note: The card mentioned in the flavor has no bearing on the game except to represent the randomly selected trump suit.)
Personally, I have ants in my pants and don't see the value of waiting. It may be the fast paced environment im accustomed to, and I certainly want to hear from everyone. But we have enough participants to engage with and gain information, don't you think?
As a reminder, I'm V/LA Friday-Sunday.
We're still in RVS, far as I'm concerned. I want to break it but what I want to break it on isn't solid enough yet, IMO. And so we wait.
@Mod: Can I please thank E_P's posts?
Unless, of course, you're scum - in which case you'll be my best friend. Or if we do that thing we did in Celestial where you help me out Night 1 and I white knight you all game. Either/or.

The GJ way path to no lynching:

Hi Blindfaeth,
I am a newer addition to these forums as well.
Hello to everyone else as well.
The Ruleset has been updated with an Order of Operations list. I think this goes without saying, but the presence of an element in that list does not necessarily indicate that an ability with that kind of effect is in this game.

Unless I have a double vote!!!
