Serious question: Does MTGS need basics right now?
Brief elaboration:
We have not really had that many new players signing up lately, obviously. Basic signups are just not firing (Void's took almost a month and in the end didn't fire at all anyway). I question the need for a game aimed at new players when we don't have a lot (and our newer players are jumping into complex games anyway!). Other games are still taking a long time to fire, but they at least do.
I would propose the following game structure:
At any time we have running a maximum of:
1 Specialty
1 League
1 Mini
1 Flex slot
The flex slot would be either a second mini, an FTQ, or a Basic depending on demand/playerbase support. Figuring out what "on demand" means might be complex. Running signup thread? Not sure what the best way is, though if we encourage posts in mafia discussion and fire the fourth game based on what people want most at the time we can probably figure it out that way too.
Thoughts?
Also, if you're reading this, please comment on what kind of games you want to see. The mafia council obviously has the final say here, but I want to start this discussion and see what solutions are out there.
There's still a place for Basics. I don't anticipate it happening much under a paradigm like this, but we want the option available in case we do get an influx of new players from somewhere.

If we implement Megs's proposed system, I suggest we bring back rolling sign-ups. As the games fill, we can have a vote among players for what kind of game they want to see in the flex slot - so let's say that the flex slot is the only game not running, someone might post:
/in - Mini
And someone else might post:
/in - FTQ
That sort of thing.
Given the lack of playerbase at present ( ), I'm in favor of this system.
In the off chance that we get an influx of players to play in new games, what would the next game type to run be? Or would we wait for a game to end?

KoolKoal: Feel free to take this with a grain of salt since self meta isn't particularly helpful, but I think I get scumread mostly for style over substance, but also for a certain lack of substance over style. It's not so much what I AM posting most of the time (though sometimes that can seem bad) but what I'm NOT posting. I've been told I come to non-obvious conclusions a lot, so when I post, quite a bit of the time there's jumps in logic that people can't follow and they think that's scummy. I get that accusation about a lot of questions I ask specifically. People call them "busy work" when the questions are legit etc.
As far as things to ignore, I can't think of anything. I would suggest you focus less on what I'm doing and more on how I'm doing it. That's probably more likely to be accurate. Like I've just said, what I do tends to come off a little weird, but if you look for how I do it, mindset comes into play and maybe you figure out something useful.

Being ridiculously out of the loop, I would appreciate it if someone had some numbers to support the position. Namely, what is the new player intake and what proportion are not starting with basics? An update to the active player list would be useful as well to try and take stock of how active the playerbase as a whole is at the moment, and the change that has occurred.

Megido's suggestions are right on target. I don't think we lose much value from ditching basics, particularly with the league replacing their functionality, if not improving upon it, quite nicely.

If we are not going to have Basics, I believe that a rule should exist that players must have X games under their belt before they join a League game. Please.
If the rate of newbies has dipped as low as we think, we're only looking at one or two fresh players per game. Is that enough to be a serious disruptive issue? What about the benefits to the new players, of learning in that environment?
In other news, any idea what has caused the drop in traffic? Is this a site-wide phenomenon, linked to the takeover?
@Megs: We already have a Mini running; I thought that's what we were doing? 1 Mini at a time? Unless you're referring to Annorax's game as a Specialty, in which case, gotcha - though I presumed it was the flex slot.
@Az: I think a large part of it is the change to Curse, though I'm sure there are other factors such as people simply not returning from vacation time, people moving on with their lives, etc. For the new players, they'll learn to sink or swim with harder games, as most of us did - and I think a lot of us turned out quite well with that in mind.

Pretty sure it's just Curse. This software is completely miserable for mafia. Understandably(but regrettably), they don't care, because mafia is never going to be a source of revenue for them, and that is what they care about. But the software just sucks for mafia in EVERY way. It will be the death of mafia on here eventually.
I guess if we're only getting 1-2 new players per Basic, then you're right that there isn't enough of a point. 1-2 people isn't that much of a disruption in a big game anyway.
I think MTGS is slowly going irrelevant, too. Reddit/Twitter/whatever are slowly taking over the space that message boards used to fill. I've seen this over a number of communities, some not related to gaming or media at all.
I just updated the hosting list and changed the Archive post to reflect the new change. If anybody has suggestions to re-word it, let me know.
My next project is going to be updating the reviewer list. I'll be making a post about this in the Mafia Council thread, so hold off on that discussion for now.

I have a theory* that we could support another mini along with the new rotation. Basics seemed to be the killers but minis seem to always fill pretty quickly and would allow us more opportunity to have a sign up open if we do start to get an influx of any other players.
1 norm, 2 minis, 1 specialty, 1 rotation?

That reminds me that I still need to host Final Fantasy Mafia II. But the specialty list is so long that it feels like it would be cluttering the list.
I'm not opposed to an experimental mini, but I agree with Megs at the moment. Let the dust settle before jumping into a fifth game.
Suggestion: If there is player demand to fire a fifth game (2nd mini), then the players who would be willing to join should post in the Hosting Signup thread (this very thread).

Ah. (Must be Coloholics, then, given that it's you *and* Generic?)
But point stands - we've had basically *NO* genuinely new players in the last 3-4 months or so, and the 2-3 players who might have been replaced out.
Also, I ran the count. We have 57 players who might be theoretically active; in practice, we probably have no more than 40.
Honestly... looking at the numbers, I'm not sure if the playerbase can regularly support more than 2 large games right now.
It is too late for the pebbles to vote."
I think that's strong evidence in favor of nixing basics for now and reducing the number of large games we run simultaneously.
But yeah, with Tare's numbers on the table, I am totally fine with Megiddo's proposed system + rolling sign-ups.

Either way, we're all gonna burn
I just updated the hosting list and changed the Archive post to reflect the new change. If anybody has suggestions to re-word it, let me know.
My next project is going to be updating the reviewer list. I'll be making a post about this in the Mafia Council thread, so hold off on that discussion for now.
1 norm, 2 minis, 1 specialty, 1 rotation?
We could test it by seeing if one would fire now...

If player demand rises, I'm sure the Council would be ok with adding another Mini.

We have a lot of oldtimers in our playerbase, now, who don't mind committing to something of that size, which is a lot more manageable.
I'm down. Formerly dropkickdude if anyone remembers me.
