Man, this whole enacting positive change thing is pretty nice. And some older players are coming back... Maybe the death of mtgs mafia was slightly exaggerated...
My biggest problem with the software is that I have no convenient way to grab a bunch of quotes as I read through the thread in order to respond to once in caught up. I used to open quotes in new tab in the full editor. Then when I was done reading I would go through my tabs in order responding and copying the content into one new post.
Without that, I feel like I can't respond to multiple posts at once and it's much harder to do research when I'm trying to find key points or quotes from earlier in the thread to use in an argument. I believe I also had problems with the advanced search function last time I tried which is quite important for formulating complex cases.

I used to do this, too, but all being unable to do this really does is makes it harder for you to fake your reactions as scum because it won't be the first time you read it when you're responding to it. I eventually gave in to our multiquote overlords and I don't feel it's affected my performance detrimentally except by a bit at the most.

So what's the deal with this non-latin unicode error thing? Has anyone figured it out yet?
You can read about the nonlatin check Here. We've added it temporarily to stop the massive influx of korean spammers.
I've added you to a group that bypasses the check. If anyone else needs a bypass for this check, request it in the linked thread above and I'll add you. Apologies for the inconvenience.

This somewhat relates to an ongoing game, but I feel compelled to talk about it, and would feel compelled to do so no matter what my alignment is, so.
I am sick of people replacing out of games. I understand that sometimes things come up and it's unavoidable. But mostly it seems to be 'welp I decided that this game isn't for me, peace'...only to sign up for a new game a week later.
I am *especially* sick of people replacing out of games when they are under pressure. This is a fully *****ty thing to do and should not even be allowed. If you are in claim range and replace out(again, barring very exceptional circumstances that would prevent you from playing again any time soon anyway), you should be modkilled and put on probation. It is completely infuriating that people just replace out, and then the town is stuck holding their dicks while the new person replacing in just gets a pass from the past player's behavior, because there is no way for them to explain it. This has happened to me too many times, in too many games. I can't take it anymore.
^ I've been *****ing about this for months. It absolutely plagues smaller games... over the past year or so chronic replace-outs in Minis have become a real issue because players don't treat them with the same level of respect as they do Specialty/League games. If there are 3 replacements in the first two days of an 18-player game, whatever. If there are 3 replacements in the first two days of a Mini, it destroys the pace of the game.
My Mini, if I ever get the time to run it (my fingers are perpetually crossed for this summer), will be utterly destroyed if people replace out as they currently do.
I'm going to include a line like "If you sign up to this game you COMMIT to playing in it unless a rock falls on you and you die. If you sign up and replace out for no reason I will probably hate you forever." Except maybe a little bit more professional than that.
It's one of two reasons everyone is going to be too intimidated to sign up for my game, I'm sure .

I'll bet you wish you had a non-unglued/unhinged card that shared your first name.
We could rule that when someone signs up for a game, they have to disclose any games they have replaced out of recently (last month?) as well as why. This could of course be done privately to the mod, but it should at least help a mod know who might be flaky before the game even starts, so they could potentially be excluded. This could be cross referenced against the post-games of past where replacements are noticed to ensure that no-one fails to declare replacing out.
It also goes without saying that players must consider the impact of their replacing out, and very carefully consider both signing up for a game they unsure they can commit to and to replacing out. Replacing out is not an acceptable tactical choice, and should be punished. If Cyan (or anyone else) has specific players in mind, they should privately contact the council, preferable with evidence.

That's not good enough though. It still doesn't justify the person ditching the game, and after a certain threshold of posts, I can imagine a lot of people not wanting to replace in, just because of all the reading that would have been needed (for me, after 1k points, I tend to be a little irritated).

Ladies and gentlemen! I've recently attended the MTGS East Coast Mod Meetup (something we did for fun; it wasn't an "official Curse-sponsored holiday/event" or anything like that). In this visit, I ran 7 or 8 different 5-man open setup Mafia games. We all had a blast (and there were hilarious shenanigans involved) with these games. I made 25 different flash cards with roles written on them, and for each setup, I tried to create an interesting puzzle. (One of the most fun ones was a Cop, an Untargetable Townie, an Untargetable Mafia, a Vanilla Town, and a Serial Killer with Cop immunity.) I think that if we run a constant stream of 5-player (which I will refer to as "Micros", here) open setup games, that we can do a few things:
1. We can improve power role use among our players.
2. We can strengthen our players' endgame scenario skills.
3. We can help break newer players into situations they might not get much experience with prior to being thrust into such a situation in a bigger game.
4. We can help cure the Mafia itch for players who want a game but don't necessarily have the commitment availability to join a bigger game.
5. It'll give a chance to allow new faces to join our area with little pressure and to get their feet wet.

Those are the same reasons for running basic games, which we don't have the demand/playerbase to support. While "Micros" would be smaller, they are even less representative of a regular game of Mafia (and would not even be particularly representative of an endgame situation in a regular game). If people want to play them, we could set them up, but frankly they look like they could easily be run in IRC on demand.
I disagree that it's necessarily the same as running a Basic. As I said, it's more of a logic puzzle and focused on correct PR actions and overall play more so than a Basic might be. Also, Az seems to think we have enough playerbase support to run 2 Specialties at a time (he asked me to launch mine as soon as Seppel's fills), so I'm curious as to what your thoughts are on that?

Basic games are intended as a low-stress introductory environment, with simple setups encouraging behavioural analysis as well as correct power role usage (without relying on the latter, as all game designs are encouraged to avoid it). All basics have an endgame of some sort that new players will (should) be involved in. They are also supposed to be relatively short and straight forward games that allow experienced players with insufficient time to commit to a large game or complex mini. A "micro" would obviously allow even shorter games (good for experienced players, or newer players familiar with RL or shorter forms of the forum game). However, I don't think they have much value to new players, given that their size and deliberate usage of high-power end-game and/or logic puzzles will be almost entirely unrepresentative of how an actual Mafia game goes down on MTGS.
If it's a logical puzzle, or a discussion of the "correct" play, it could pretty easily be translated into a Godfather-like game to be played in the Clan thread. This is especially true if the puzzle has a correct answer, or a very narrow set of outcomes, as playing the game becomes pretty redundant at that point.
To a certain extent, I think there's two conflicting ideas: small games representing "logic puzzles" or interesting endgame-style scenarios, and very small basics for small, quick, introductory games. I could see the basic queue being revitalised with hosts allowed to run (say) 7 player games as "Micro Basics", with all the associated trappings of Basics. Endgame challenges and puzzles do not, I think, have a place as a separate queue when they could easily be run as open-ended Godfather-like games or even just pure discussion and theorycrafting.
With respect to Az's assessment of the playerbase, it's not something I've heard discussed (either privately or through public call from anyone to run more games), but I'm not very active and so would have to trust someone more up date with current affairs. However, if we do have the playerbase to support another Speciality, I don't think a Speciality is necessarily the best place for it. I'd probably prefer to see Basics come back, but this would be pretty open to public demand.
It's less a function of my thinking we've got an overabundance of players, and more a function of the new rolling queue, and attempting to keep *some* kind of signup open at all times. At the time, I think only the specialty hosts were actually fully prepped and ready to fire *anything*.
So if anyone is looking to queue jump, now is a good time to polish up the setups you've been working on and update KJ on your status.
We could potentially see if there's a demand for 5-man micros. It's possible that they could fill a niche we may be in need of at the moment - they feature a low time commitment, they're very easy to design, they meet demand quickly without tying up large segments of the playerbase.
I can see the merit, although I will say that games like that feel a little bit more like exercises than games and I probably wouldn't opt to play. In an ideal world, we're just rolling/ firing more minis as demand ramps, which makes me think that we need to encourage more development of those types of games and to also possibly secure more reviewers. Not to ignore the idea just, personally, that's where I'd prefer we add focus.
As someone who played those, they were interesting, but mostly because they only took a few minutes. Spreading them out over a month would make them pretty tedious, especially when a lot of the setups could basically be solved with a day 1 claim.

1. They fire really quick and therefore can get people into games quickly, therefore making it possible to increase the population of the subforum.
2. All the reasons Iso said.
3. They sound fun as heck.
Micros are inherently different from basics in that you need less than half as many players, so you don't have things like it taking a month for a rolling signup to come around; this way, it's more likely to be a week until firing.
Just make sure to have a strict deadline (say, 1 week per Day) and I think it would be a great idea.
GIven that we just filled a 24 player game easily, should we relax the maximum of 18?
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
There was a long time where 24 player game after 24 player game would almost never get off the ground. Even now, many signups linger for far fewer players.
Seppel is one of the best mods period, and one of the only people who can pull 24 players into a game right now, and only then with an interesting setup (which Seppel always has, that's why he's one of the best mods period).
On top of that, 24 player games can get bogged down heavily until you weed out a lot of the early players. There needs to be a lot of determination to be interested in the game from a lot of players, otherwise you end up with only a few interested players and a lot of lurkers until a lot of dudes die. And if people lurk, they get replaced, and once you have too many replacements you've used up the entire playerbase on a single game.
Hopefully that won't be a problem with FF2, but 24 player games are hard to sustain properly (just look at the cluster**** that was Starcraft). 16-18 is a much better cap for large games.
18 players isn't strictly a maximum cap, it's just very strongly recommended, particularly for new(er) mods who don't necessarily have the pull and experience to fill and moderate a larger game.

This. It takes either a really good mod (like Seppel) or a *****ty mod with a very fun, flavorful setup (me) to pull in more than 20 these days. I'd say it's not likely for a Normal or something with less involved flavor to get more than 18 players now.

This. It takes either a really good mod (like Seppel) or a *****ty mod with a very fun, flavorful setup (me) to pull in more than 20 these days. I'd say it's not likely for a Normal or something with less involved flavor to get more than 18 players now.

https://twitch.tv/SwiftorCasino (yes, my team and I run live dealer games for the baldman using his channel points as chips)
Big games tend to go on for a long time and real life happens. 18-20 players are the sweet spot.
Thanks to DNC at Heroes of the plane studios for this awesome sig and SGT_Chubbz for the awesome avy.
