It seems like most of the regulars that I see around here who would be interested in it have already decided whether they want to or not - and that only leaves less than half the spots filled. 25 is a big game to fill. I wouldn't be surprised to see it get like 19ish, but I think it will be very hard to fill up the last five or six spots. And with multiple people not liking some rules and /out-ing...
Either way, I don't think a Basic going up would interfere with the Hydra signups (whether you guys decide to keep it up or not), and there is some demand for it.
I have a Specialty in review but my reviewers say it's not anywhere complicated enough to be a Specialty - but it has 2 scum teams.
Wat do???
Given the new structure, two scum teams is sufficient complexity to be a Specialty. I don't think there is a problem with a Specialty that isn't totally off the wall every now and then. You could try looking at emulating Doomsday Mafia and having the two teams working towards different goals to add depth.

Your reviewers are wrong. There are just two types of games, normal and non-normals. Normals have pretty strict requirements and yours certainly do not fit, so it's instantly upgraded to speciality.
Specialities are not the place just for "complex or innovative" games anymore, this has changed when the normal queue was restructured. I also think that contrary to popular belief games get more enjoyable the less complexity they have, and yes this includes veterans. New World Order for the win.

The game is not being dumbed down. Control is doing fine; Draw-Go is not the only kind of control. Aggro is doing fine; Red Deck Wins is not the only kind of aggro. Creature combat is an important core concept and belongs in every color. Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.

Well that's why I want it to be a normal. It's not complicated at all. The only non-Normal thing about it is the dual-scum factions.
And yet that is enough. Two scum factions make the game play out very differently than normal, not least because everyone in the game is making an honest attempt to scumhunt. Any time you have a rule that drastically changes the game away from the norms, it's a specialty. QED.

What are we doing about the Beta stuff? It looks like it's coming and we can't do anything about it. It also seems to trash a lot of our features. I know many members of the mafia community have already expressed displeasure and/or the necessary changes, but I think they are being ignored.
Is there even a reason for the switch other than the fact that Curse apparently bought MTGS?
I'm not trying to sound dismal, I'm curious if we can have any impact here. Maybe we can put together a list of the features we would really like to maintain and actually pressure them as a large subforum united to restore them.
I think that you are asking the wrong question. The real question is "was MTGS sustainable without being purchased by another owner who could expend real time and resources maintaining it?" The answer to that is "no."
This website's architecture is... not stable. For those who aren't aware of these things, prior to being purchased, MTGS was maintained by a staff of exactly one, and he was not particularly available to handle site needs (sightings of our former owner were sometimes months apart, which was incredibly frustrating when adding new admins). The admin team knew that the end was coming reasonably soon, and the Curse deal was seen as a saving grace for the site, mostly because it was.
Curse's platform, while being very different, has one major thing that we didn't have as an independent vbulletin site: stability. The current site is kind of hacked together with addons and such, which is the nature of vbulletin, of course, but it makes for maintaining and upgrading the site as time goes on cumbersome—especially when your tech team consists of a single absentee owner who's reluctant to keep paying the bills. I am not familiar with Curse's platform, but the big difference is that they have an actual dev team (nice people, I've talked with them) that maintains the site and keeps things running. Oh, and actual server capacity that isn't in danger of being shut down at any point.
Unfortunately, we can't have our cake and eat it too. Moving to a new platform comes with the territory of being bought out, for good or for bad. There are some real, tangible disadvantages to moving, of course, the primary being that we will lose a percentage of the active userbase that won't be able to browse at work anymore. However, there are many benefits, which I touched on above.
Hopefully this was all public knowledge already and I don't get banned, but that's the situation in a nutshell.
tl;dr: We're moving because we would have died if we hadn't been bought out and as part of that Curse is moving us to their platform, making us part of their family of websites.

No because Guardman already covered pretty much everything I would want to say there and they just hand waved him. No reason to try and post unless I have something new to add or some way to apply additional pressure.

So what are we at risking of losing? People who can't log in at work (yikes), posts per page selection, and multi-quote? Anything else?
While we're at it, we'd discussed some fixes to the search engine, namely being able to multi-quote from the search page.
If we can make that stuff happen, that'd be awesome. PPP is a particularly high priority - I don't play on GG nearly as much as I used to, in part because of how annoying and time-consuming it is to reload pages about 4 times as often as I need to do here.
Well since my name was brought up as the one with the feedback, so here is what I posted:
Reposting the feedback I gave in the last feedback thread that is still relevant:
Signing In/Getting the Right Account:
1. This Curse sign-in thing needs something done about it as it is causing my computer at work fits trying to sign-in. I know it's not firefox since it worked fine at home, so it could possibly be because I am on a cloud or something, but half the time I signed in, it didn't sign me in and instead just redirected me to a log-in screen, telling me to log in or join. I am not sure what is causing it as it seems random, but it's annoying. Also in that same vein I seem to be randomly logged off after a while. This is the only site it happens on, so I feel it probably is specific to the site/log-in stuff.
2. When I sign-in to the Beta and it goes through it seems to sign me in for every Curse site. This is annoying because everytime I want to check the red tracker on ReignofGaming it prompts me to choose a nickname and won't let me in to the site. Signing into one site shouldn't sign you in to other sites.
3. I still have the problem where when I sign in I am being signed-in to the wrong account due to two accounts having the same email address. As it is I am currently unable to access my Guardman account on the Beta. I am auto signed in on Chrome Browser, but on every other browser it signs me in two a different account.
Avatars:
1. All of the corners are rounded, not allowing for 100x100 true square avatars.
2. The avatars seem to be raised or have some sort of shading/beveling around it which is very annoying especially when looking at certain avatars (see The Warden's avatar for example).
3. The little green dot in the corner of avatars when you are online is also annoying. Especially if a person has text at the bottom of an avatar.
4. I don't like having a blank picture for people without avatars. It would be nice if it just showed nothing like the current site does.
Basically make it so that the avatars are 100% like people uploaded it as and don't try to mess around or put stuff over.
Post Per Page:
Also I seem to be unable to change the number of posts per page (I don't see an option to change it), which is extremely annoying for something like Mafia which prefers my current of 60 ppp.
Skin:
Site still needs a dark skin for people like me who find that the current skin hurts their eyes.
Posting:
Is there a place to have preset fonts and colors. Right now I don't even see a place to change the font in the post box.
Also why is there no post page? It seems like I can only quick reply right now. I miss having an entire page dedicated for post writing and not having it clogged with other posts. Also there are a lot of post functionality missing such as the preset smiles that you can easily get to (or most of the smiles for that matter).
The quick reply box is really, really wide. While I like having posts be widescreened, writing posts in the quick reply box on wide is actually really annoying and a little hard to follow as not everything is in my field of vision.
Can the quick reply/reply area use a different font than courier new. In fact it would be nice if could be set to use use the font you use to post.
Need a dropdown menu for fonts and colors.
User Info:
Also we are missing things like locations, join date, blog posts, and the flag under the avatar.
It is sort of hard to tell who is a mod and such. It took me a while to see the five color next to a name. It would be nice if staff still had different name colors or formatting or something so it is easier to tell.
Quoting:
The dropdown multiquote is awkward at best, and makes multiquoting awkward especially since the post box appears below the first quote you quote. Really need the multiquote system like the current forum has as it's a lot easier to use then this.
Also really need a post page that you can go to with all your quotes like the current forum has.
Forum General:
Speaking of annoying the most annoying thing is the avatars next to names of who posted on a thread. They are too small to tell what they are or who they are, but so colorful that they are distracting. Either get rid of them or at the very least give an option to turn them off.
Also why does this site need a Terms of Service above the post box. It's been bothering me since I noticed. MTGSalvation isn't supposed to be a corporate website. It's supposed to be a forum. It just feels wrong. It's one thing to have a corporate owner and another thing to really feel like the site is being engulfed in the corporateness.
I haven't got around to checking to see if any of these things are fixed due to the signing in of the site being a pain in the ass for me to use. The entire sign-in system is probably the single biggest thing that will make me quit if I do because it is just plain annoying and takes over my system and signs me into every curse site, never signs me in rights, randomly signs me out at work, etc. But talking to them I get the feeling there is not much they can do to help me unless they completely change the sign-in system.
I guess that is the big thing with me, the problem isn't so much the change, but how it is being changed. The biggest problems with the new system such as being a curse website/log-in system are something that has to be lived with and can't be changed, which neuters a lot of whatever positive was supposed to come from this. It's like your current car is being held together with duck tape so you get a mini cooper instead of the mini van you need.
About a month ago, Curse was starting to look at making to the full move to the Beta. As part of their final check, they had the admins do a comprehensive feature and bug audit. We gave them a pretty massive list, so they ended up deferring to go back and address things that had been previously tabled, new things that had arisen since then, and just all around go through it with a finetooth comb.
Here's a summary of what the outcome of their first pass over our audit was:
Animated avatar will be supported.
Avatars will be square instead of rounded
Post formatting will match across sites. (If you spent a bunch of time getting your primer or game OP to look just right, it's going to look the same over there)
Custom Titles will be supported, but they're not going to make it in by launch. It's been added to their update plan for ALL their sites, so it's coming.* Stacking titles and formatted titles should be added at the same time.
The thanks button is slated to be added at launch.
Forum skins will be supported. So far, all I know of is a Dark alternate skin, but we'll see what they do.
Dice tags are slated for post-launch, but some of the techs have been working on them already
New version of the Spy
The top dropdown bars will be click-to-open instead of hover-to-open
Public profile fields (join date, location, etc) will be displayed under avvies again.
Staff bold usernames will be back
Quoting system fixed and improved
Option to hide user avvies and sigs
Trophy data will be saved, but won't be displayed until they get the system in place for them (post-launch)
Bunch of mod stuff (easier thread management, improved report system, etc)
Thread and post icons will be coming post-launch
Mana symbol spacing will be fixed
A new "Advanced Editor" feature
Posts per Page and Threads per page both will go increased to 50.
"Mark all read" will be fixed
Spoilers clipping the sig will be fixed
Forum tree ends at the main forum index instead of the home page.
Deck list tag updates
An issue with quotes was fixed
Space between sig and text was fixed
"Name on the door" for local mods set to be visible by default
Some set spoiler issues were fixed.
Ability to sort by view count, post count, OP, etc. will make it in before launch.
Bunch of CSS and checkbox fixes.
That's the starting list, and I took off the mod-only crap and there was also more techy stuff. If there's problems that weren't covered in the above, I strongly recommend you post to CI or the beta. The techs peek in on the CI thread from time to time but they very actively follow the beta. I can answer what questions I can here, but if there's things that we're missing, it's important you let the techs know.
*I should note: one of the things they've stressed is that our feature updates and fixes are going to the whole Curse network, and vice versa, so when we go live, development isn't going to stop there because everything they develop for us represents a network-wide improvement.
EDIT: I should note that a LOT of that list is still in development or not yet pushed to the public iteration. If it's on that list but not visible on the public beta, give it time, it's coming.

I'm not familiar with the upcoming changes but in reading this, if the sign up system made it so that I couldn't log in from work (and depending on the website classification, that's very possible) that would really hurt my ability to participate. That would be the only thing I'd be overly concerned about.
I've been on the Beta a few times and I noticed that times on posts aren't shown (down to the minute) like it is here. Is it possible we could get that implemented? It seems pretty important to me, especially for Mafia.
If this has already been covered then don't worry about it

In general, will there be options for ppp like there are now? I tend to go to the highest possible ppp so I don't have to go back and forth between pages. If it's locked at 50 I'll be fine since I'm on 60ppp now.
I like 60PPP because it keeps the number of the pages in the game low. It makes finding specific events in a game without search easier for me, since there are fewer clicks required to get to what I'm looking for. All I have to do is remember, generally, where something happened in a game and I can go there. With so many posts on one page I'm bound to have some overlap with the section of the game I want.

I think allowing users to set their PPP preference should be our top priority. I also highly value multi-quote. I haven't had a chance to read ER's extensive list of features we can expect to see, but I'm glad to see that there seems to be some ongoing dialogue regarding these important issues.

You are not fooling anybody when you refer to a game and redact the title of it because anyone can look at the currently active games and determine what's going on from vague references.
It's not clever, and at worst, it's a dishonest and flagrant violation of the game host's rules.

I feel like sometimes things like "I think X is scum because of our ongoing game." is a reasonable thing to say. Obviously you can't go into detail, but it can explain your current mindset sometimes. It isn't like people can keep ongoing games from influencing their own opinions.

Given the new structure, two scum teams is sufficient complexity to be a Specialty. I don't think there is a problem with a Specialty that isn't totally off the wall every now and then. How many didn't, out of curiousity? Though I can't imagine it's very many, given game overlap.
Ironically, one of the people who played in the last 6 Basics that was not in any of the last 5 Specialty games was Azrael.

Is there even a reason for the switch other than the fact that Curse apparently bought MTGS?
I'm not trying to sound dismal, I'm curious if we can have any impact here. Maybe we can put together a list of the features we would really like to maintain and actually pressure them as a large subforum united to restore them.
My cube: http://cubetutor.com/viewcube/9981
Our servers and vBulletin are/were really outdated. We've got a lot held together by sticks and glue. I am personally not keen on the switch but it is what it is.

Curse has been actively soliciting feedback for features we want along the process.
Frankly, I don't care about the politics. It's happening and it sucks, I just want to not lose too much.

I know that both the admins and us globals are actually listening to any issues to see if we can get Curse to fix them.

*stares menacingly at Iso, strokes glove*
Here's a summary of what the outcome of their first pass over our audit was:

Will there be nested quotes?
If so, can there NOT be nested quotes? They've been the bane of my existence from day 1.
I'm just scared of losing features. Last I heard "advanced post" wasn't even an option and quick posts were the only method.
My cube: http://cubetutor.com/viewcube/9981
Note that advanced post is on the list of changes from our audit.
I don't recall off the top of my head anything about nested & multiquotes, but I can check in.
I seem to remember that PPP was fixed though for server performance improvements (again, I'll need to double check to confirm).

DO NOT REFERENCE ON-GOING GAMES.
You are not fooling anybody when you refer to a game and redact the title of it because anyone can look at the currently active games and determine what's going on from vague references.
It's not clever, and at worst, it's a dishonest and flagrant violation of the game host's rules.
Show some respect.
That is all.
