I would like to submit to anyone still wanting to design a game with 20+ players some more evidence in the sign-ups of Arcadic's "King of the Hill" mafia. It has now been open for two weeks, and he is still 3 players short. As of right now, the game hasn't started, but I will eat crow if once the game has been going for a few weeks, he doesn't start having activity issues. Following that, needing to modkill at least a couple players due to lack of replacements by the end of the game.
It is truly my belief that, for most instents and purposes, we are past the time when 20+ player games are able to be run here. Now, there are exceptions to the rule, but they are just that, exceptions. Please, please, please think carefully about designing any games in the future with 20 or more players. The evidence has shown time and time again that these games are plagued by lack of a sufficient player base to support them.

Not only 20+ games, there's no need for any game to have more than 16 players imho. With 16 players you can do anything you like really without the drawback of large games.

The game is not being dumbed down. Control is doing fine; Draw-Go is not the only kind of control. Aggro is doing fine; Red Deck Wins is not the only kind of aggro. Creature combat is an important core concept and belongs in every color. Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
I suspect that only very well known mods will be able to easily pull in 20 plus players. For example, Ataghan mafia is 21 players, but that was oversubscribed very quickly.
I would thus suggest that mods put together smaller games until they establish a reputation for excellence that can pull in 20+
Reputation, hype, and flavor are the things that determine whether players can pull off 20 player games. I agree that mods should be encouraged to start making 14-18 player games instead of 20-24 that we are currently seeing.

The problem simply is that i had this setup started over 2 years ago. I put a lot of work into it to get it right and the playerbase has abandoned large games. I've known full well, and i'm sure others have as well, that if they plan their normal at the old size it will be a chore to fill. The slow pace doesn't hurt anyone other than those who still enjoy larger games.
I still think that due to the slow pace of normals that players should be allowed to signup for a mini slot while waiting for their normal.
IMHO, part of the problem is that the word "Normal" doesn't indicate anything exciting. Rather than encouraging mods to design smaller setups, why not make "Normal" setups special in some other way? Make all normal setups invitationals only, where only the best players get in to show the rest of us how real scumhunting is done. I would totally spectate that thread. But yeah, if I'm given the choice of being /in for a Normal vs. Specialty or FTQ, I'm going for the latter every time. That's one major reason why the game I'm having reviewed right now is for 21 players but I'm doing everything in my power to get that baby on the FTQ or Specialty lists.

If you make it invitationals only then it will have an even harder time filling.
With them being invitationals, they would also be much less frequent. I forgot to mention that part. *OR* They could be turned into clinics. Find 20 GOOD players and let people reverse mentor. They can spectate and ask the player why they're doing certain things, etc.
Highly prestigious, infrequent games? We already have those: they're FTQs and PCQs. Normals are intended to appeal to players who are after a bigger game than a mini, more interesting than a basic, but less complex than a specialty. Apparently, demand for such games is at a low ebb, and moderators need to rely on slick and elegant roles and good flavour to attract players.

Yeah, your game is definitely Specialty-level. As for the "Normal" aspect of it, there's a reason they're called that - they're not supposed to defy traditional setup balance or any of that at all. No wonky mechanics that potentially unbalance the game. But they're bigger than Basics. That's why some people like Normals. Plus they're decent for new players to graduate from Basics to. OR, if necessary, we could even make all 15+ player games FTQ and/or PCQ so that we could keep players interested. Mods would then be challenged to keep their setups interesting and relevant, and would give them motivation not to make dreadnought games.
Sorry for the triple post but I'm on my phone.
With my proposed system, we would see X Basics as the playerbase demands, 2-4 small games based on how the restructuring goes, 1 FTQ of any size, 1 large game from either the queue or player choice, whatever is decided, and 1 League game of any size.
These numbers could easily be changed if we ever got an influx of players. I think I want to make the hosting list more detailed now.

Er, actually, if it's not too late to change, I suppose I'd rather do a basic, just because they seem like they rotate in faster. I think I could have mine done pretty soon.
What exactly do you need to be "done" and be up for review? Is there a place I could find this info (a link to somewhere)?

I'd still like this answered...
I'm basically wondering what is the normal process for creating a game. I already have characters and rolls... what do I need to send to the person who reviews the game? Role PMs? What the OP of the thread will look like?
If someone could let me know this information or where to find it that would be great.
Also, I'm still not on the list for Basic games. Can this please be fixed? Thanks

It depends on the reviewer. Some reviewers like full flavor role PMs and any other setup info, while others like bare-bones roles and setup only. I'm sure either is fine.

Characters and roles should be sufficient. Rolls are a bonus gifts of thanks. It makes sense to get those base mechanics down before writing all the flavour out anyway.
If a reviewer needs more info from you, they'll ask for it.
I'll be out of the country for three weeks starting November 25th, and then I'll be involved with training at my volunteer job for most of January, so I won't be able to host my Mini until February at the earliest. Sorry for the inconvenience.

If you make it invitationals only then it will have an even harder time filling.
I don't get what you're saying. Just swap normals with FTQS games? What would be the point of that?
Instead, I propose:
We run 4 Minis at once (1 Basic, 2 Normal, 1 Specialty)
We run 2 Specialty, 1 FTQ, and when demand dictates, 1 Player's Choice game at any given time.
Player's choice can totally be a normal. That's the definition of player's choice.

Personally, 18 is my limit. I'm working on a setup for 20+ players right now but I have no intention of running it here.

Then there would be little to no motivation to join Normals.
Uhhm.
We're currently using the PCQ for the League games.
Also, why would the players ever /choose/ a Normal, except for one with exceptional flavor?

3 for Specialties. For Normal, it's two plus one GiP, so if those mod games count, he's good.

Is this déjà vu? I swear we've had this exact conversation (at least once if not twice) already.
But yeah, /barn RobRoy.

What exactly do you need to be "done" and be up for review? Is there a place I could find this info (a link to somewhere)?
I think the last time we had this discussion was when KoolKoal asked if he could sign up.
Foxlet, Jobie & Deathjoey requested replacement. Emo_Pinata and TheIceMan were forcibly replaced after failing to respond to prods.
Would like to request to be put on the Normal hosting list (Amistarian III), please.

I'll be out of the country for three weeks starting November 25th, and then I'll be involved with training at my volunteer job for most of January, so I won't be able to host my Mini until February at the earliest. Sorry for the inconvenience.
I fully expect to be able to stay active in my games until they are over, but if I suddenly disappear for days at a time, I give the game hosts permission to replace me without a prod.
I.
AM.
OUTRAGED.
Tanarin and I will be pressing forward with Blind Hydra without Niv, being as he has dropped off the face off the planet.
I'll have to remember to keep a game open when that rolls around. Seems fun.
Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
Give me a shout (although, if you're familiar with the show, I'd recommend you play).
Can't wait to see the in game flavor for this Basic Game.
