I am based out of Nashville, TN. I am 29 years old and first started playing back during Onslaught block with my half brother and his dad. We played all throughout high school. We had a grass cutting company and several of us played at varying degree's. My brother, me, and his dad were really into tournament style of playing. After Big T stopped playing, I started to card pool with a childhood friend of mine all through high school up until college. After having two really bad run-ins, we were robbed twice by people we trusted, I decided to take a break from the game. I let my buddy Ryan keep everything, as he was still into playing and I trusted him with the stuff. A few years later after college, he was moving to Colorado for a job opportunity. He asked if I wanted to sit down and split the cards up, but I told him just to give me a fair split out of the collection, this included some newer stuff(to me) he had acquired over the years that was added to the collection. (After going through the cards and pricing them out - I ended up with a nice split. I realize time adds value and these are older cards so at the time they might not have been worth much, but he treated me very well in the end.)
That stuff sat in my closet for over several years before my brother Todd called me one day, he decided to he wanted to get back into it, and I had been kind of already thinking about it myself. This was back in November 2016. I spent the next few months learning about the new formats, checking out the top decks, and spending countless hours combing through the cards I had left over(several thousands).
I knew I wanted to play Modern. I remember had much I disliked constructed standard back in the day, and I really only liked to play Limited. Modern is an entirely new format to me. I think they had the Extended format back when I last played, but it wasn't as good as Modern seems now. I want to also eventually get into Legacy, and I fully intend to. I may consider checking out Standard after the new set is released as I still have a lot of homework to do on Standard.
Right now I am focused on playing Grixis in Modern. My buddy Ryan had left me cards specifically for that build because he knew I enjoyed playing control. I want to acquire all of the possible variants, but I just finished the "Classic Delver" list. I plan on getting the Grixis control list cards, next. Once I finish Grixis entirely, I will probably try to build some kind of aggro deck for Modern. I am planning on also playing Grixis in Legacy since a lot of the cards are similar and I can just get the Legacy cards and port the deck over. I'm not necessarily on the strictest of budgets, but I am still very conservative with my money. I think the current plan is to trade as much of the cards I got left over as I can, then I will eventually sell all cards I have left over that I don't actually use in a deck as I don't really care about collecting cards anymore.(Maybe that'll change once I actually start playing.)
I am greatly looking forward to getting back into the game. We are planning on checking out all PTQ's and GP's we can possibly attend in the South-East US. We are looking forward to making several vacations a year out of MTG tournaments. I have been creeping on these forums since probably at least January, and upon receiving the last actual card I needed for my deck, I told myself the next step was signing up for these forums, and trying to get involved into the discussion. There are a LOT of new mechanics since I last played. I recently learned combat damage doesn't go on the stack anymore, for instance. I have also never personally played with a planeswalker card.
I also found my original DCI card, it is dated from 2003.
Anyway glad to be here. I look forward to learning more about the game and the new decks. It is almost an entirely new game since I last played. I still haven't actually participated in a LGS tournament yet, but there is a local Modern tournament on Sundays that I will start going to.
