What do you mean with substituting? If you wonder if you can use colourless mana to pay for the coloured part ( etc. )of a mana cost then no. Colourless mana can only be used to pay for generic ( Written out like this: ) or colourless (written out like this: ) mana costs.
As an example:
Fact or Fiction
You can use colourless OR any coloured mana to pay for the generic mana ( ) in the cost, you can only use blue mana to pay for the blue part ( ).
Kozilek, the Great Distortion
You can use colourless or any coloured mana to pay for the generic mana ( ) in the cost. You can only use colourless mana to pay for the colourless cost ( ).
Hope that clarified it somewhat.
