Okay, so I have a few questions about DnD 3.5 that have come up in my playgroup.
I am a new DM, and honestly fairly new to DnD. I've played, but DMing is quite another thing. So many of the DnD rules are implied, and the PH and DMG are really difficult to use for rulings.
First off, I should say that I let my party roll really high. I let them roll 4D6, rerolling ones. I *thought* that this was what my old DM used to do, until I realized that my old DM did that and then dropped the lowest D6. Which is still pretty generous.
So I have some level three characters with 22 Wis or 21 Int, and it is really confusing to know what they can and can't do.
I have a cleric who is level 3 and thinks that he can cast level 5 spells. His stats are certainly high enough for him to have a level 5 spell slot, but I don't think he can cast spells above his level.
Here's what I've heard so far.
Me: "Shouldn't it be... your level? Like, if you're level 3, you can cast level 3 spells."
A Coworker: "He can cast spells of his caster level, which is always half your level rounded up. So he can cast level 2 spells."
Other Source: "I think HD is the actual limitation. Or maybe it's HD and Caster Level, whichever is lowest."
I trust my coworker, but I'm getting mixed signals. I know the DnD threads down here aren't checked much, but if you're browsing, and know the answer for sure (we don't need another guess), please help.

I'll be sad if people don't start calling The Chain Veil "Fleetwood Mac."
What spells he can cast depends on his level in the Cleric class. An entry of — means that he can't cast spells of that level. A high ability score in the casting ability (Wisdom for clerics) means that he gets more spell slots (Table) in the levels he has available (up to level 2 spells for a level 3 cleric)
BTW, this would fit better in the Pen and Paper Inn.
Thanks, I wasn't sure. I'll self-report, if the mods don't mind moving it...

Yeah, Halinn is right here. Basically, to determine what level of spells he can cast and how many of them, first look at the table on the cleric-class. In this case, since he's level 3, 4 0th/2+1 1st/1+1 2nd. The +1's are his domain slot, and can only be used to prepare a domain spell in. Then, add bonus spells for high ability scores. In this case, since he has 22 Wis, 2 1st/2 2nd. This totals up to..
4 0th/4+1 1st/3+1 2nd

The Sage is occupied with the unspoken
and acts without effort.
Teaching without verbosity,
producing without possessing,
creating without regard to result,
claiming nothing,
the Sage has nothing to lose.
