I have need of skilled adventurers to solve a problem for me. In the recent months, people have been vanishing in the forest on the border of my lands. My son among them. I can't send my troops into the forest, for fear of panicking the population. My guards and hirelings are unsuited for this kind of delicate operation. So I found you.
I've heard tales of your adventures. They are impressive indeed. Please come to Dragondale in two weeks, and I will explain further. Stay at the Laughing Giant Inn, and I'll contact you there.
You will, of course, be very well compensated for your services.
Sincerely,
Baron Thallman
Two weeks ago, three adventurers recieved this note by messenger.
Now, they have come to the town of Dragondale to answer this request for help.
The Laughing Giant is a fairly well-off inn, for a smallish town like Dragondale. The fire is warm, the ale sweet, and the food fresh. Heads of many animals line the walls. Obviously this town makes its living off the forest. Elk, deer, boar, and even a bear's head are mounted and preserved along two of the walls.
Patrons chant amicably and the bartender and waitresses deliver hot food to counter the chill of the pre-winter air outside.
At three seperate tables in three seperate corners, Jordle Glimmercoin, Alexander Slithis, and Ursinus Koliel wait to be contacted by the Baron.
After an hour or so of waiting, the waitress passes each a note, directing them to a table at the furthest back corner of the room. At the table, two hooded men sit.
For the record, none of your characters have met before.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Alexander stood up and smiled at the waitress. "An ale for me please. Something tells me I'm going to need a good drink while I hear what the gentlemen have to say." He approached the table and sat in the middle. "Gentlemen, I assume you represent my client?"
Jordle dismisses the waitress with a nod, then studies the note carefully with much brow wrinkling. Expression unchanging, he mutters a few guttural words of magic and the sheet of paper folds itself into a tiny, vaguely humanoid shape, which dashes across the floor to cast itself into a cooking fire.
He stands, murmuring to the sparrow-which-is-not-a-sparrow at the collar of his robes as he does so.
~Quurthx, the hooded pair in the corner. Are they lawful men? Servants of this Baron?
Quurthx has detect law as a constant spell-like ability.
With a small smile and a word of thanks, Ursinus takes the proffered note. Carefully, he flicks it open with his long fingers and reads it over twice. I wonder of which adventure he is speaking? Does he require the services of a tracker? Or a poisoner? Ursinus muses as he slips the note into his bag of holding, just in case.
Before getting up to join the shadowy figures already in the other corner, Ursinus takes a sip of the polypurpose panacea (wakefullness) he prepared that morning. The liquid buzzes down his throat and settles unsteadily somewhere in the pit of his stomach. I must stop drinking these... the elf chides himself for the thousandth time.
Confidently, Ursinus strides across the crowded Inn and settles himself before the two hooded figures, next to the human already seated.
Gentlemen, allow me first to say that I sympathize deeply with your employer's plight. The loss of a child is a thing beyond bearing. You need only tell me how I may be of assistance and it will be done.
"Children shouldn't be running around alone in the first place unless they are armed. Well that is what my dad would say before I went out to play."
Alex smirked at the elf sitting next to him. He was sizing the elf up and down, suspicious but realized that he was probably going to work with him. He had no problems with that, get the job done faster and besides he noticed that he had some potions on him. Alex figured he was some sort of alchemist, which he'd was impressed to see. He hadn't met many alchemists and the talented ones were interesting to watch.
The two men seem to be sizing up the group, then the one on the right lowers his hood. He's got jet black hair and dark intelligent eyes. His features are strong and hardend, obviously a man who's seen plenty of battle. This is confirmed by the massive scar running diagonally across his rugged face.
"We do represent the Baron. I'm the captain of his guard, Saros." Saros seems to deliberately not introduce the man to his left. "As for my lord's son... he's twenty-three years old. He was hunting in the forest with several royal guardsmen and his uncle when they all vanished. None have returned. That was three weeks ago. My lord is under no illusions. Nobody who has vanished into the forest has returned."
The man to Saros' left speaks. "Eleven people. Including my brother, my son, and three royal guardsmen. In the last two months." He lowers his hood, finally, and reveals an aged and weathered face. His hair and beard are greying, and he has dark circles around his sunken eyes as though he hasn't slept for those three weeks.
Saros looks disapprovingly at the Baron. "My lord, you should not have revealed your identity before I could gague their motives. What if one were an assassin?"
"Nonsense," the Baron retorts. "If they were assassins, we would know it," To the three adventurers, he says "Please excuse Saros. His job is to be paranoid."
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
"Well I'm impressed you chose to greet us in person my lord. Tell us what you believe it is then."
The magus was surprised by the fact his employer came in person to talk. Normally in his field of work they never come in person unless he was invited to their house.
Ah, Baron Thallman, it is a pleasure to make your aquaintance, even in these less than pleasurable times. Ursinus dips his head to the graying gentleman, a sign of deference. If I may, my lord, three weeks is a very long time for a trail to lie cold. Perhaps too many for even a tracker as skilled as myself. With the heavy snowfall, my talents may not be as useful as you hope. Rest assured though, I will do everything in my power to help you find your son, brother and bondsmen, be they dead or alive.
Steepling his fingers, the elf leans backwards to get a better view of his companion. The human was fit but a razor-edged intelligence was clearly glittering behind his brown eyes. It would be interesting to see what the man did with that intellect and perhaps more interesting to see if he would be trustworthy.

Jordle walks quickly towards the table, dodging a few inattentive drunks as he does so. He stops a respectful distance from the patrons and performs a sharp bow.
"Lord Thallman. Forgive this gnome for a perfunctory introduction and a late entrance. I am Jordle Glimmercoin, master invisimancer and illusionist. I am both pleased to make your acquaintance and hopeful that I might render you some service. I merely thought it prudent to..."
He pauses a moment, pondering the words.
"...observe you momentarily, to make certain there was no threat."
With a short hop, Jordle makes his way onto a stool, and nods to the other three.
"My pleasure, gentlemen."
The sparrow nestled next in the collar of his robes rustles its feathers nervously.
"Greetings Jordle, it's an honor to make your acquaintance. I am Alexander Slithis, and this elf here sitting next to me is.....Actually I don't believe we exchanged our names until now. Anyways, our client the baron here was about to tell us what exactly he thinks is the reason for the disappearance of his son, his brother, and his people."
Alexander nodded to the gnome, curious about the sparrow on top of his shoulders. Something felt odd about it, it wasn't just any normal sparrow familiar. Then again Jordle did say he was an illusionist so odds were that the sparrow was something else entirely. Remarkable, he is definitely a talented one and the Elf definitely carries himself better than most elves in his position would. This is going to be interesting. A small smirk came on his face as he looked around for his ale that he had ordered. It shouldn't take this long for a simple drink to be delivered.
"The Gods do not favor us with good omens at our first meeting Alexander, but the straightforwardness of your thought is refreshing. Let us hear this explanation through."
This Jordle is certainly cautious. I wonder if it is borne of true prudence or doubt in his abilities? He did introduce himself as master, though and something in his bearing speaks to the truth of that. Prudence then. Ursinus wonders, sizing the gnome up. He is always impressed by the smaller races for their tenacity to live in a not world built for them. This gnome seems no different, perfectly comfortable amidst a world of giants. Alexander seems polite and competents as well, though he may bear more investigation. In fact, they both might, those who approach situations with suspicion are often worthy of it themselves. But now that introductions had been made, introducing himself was the proper thing to do.
This elf sitting next to you is Ursinus Koliel, herbalist and tracker. Poor soubriques compared to master invisimancer and illusionist but they are mine and I keep them fondly. It is truly a pleasure to meet the three of you and I hope our time together will be fruitful. Ursinus says nodding to Alexander, Jordle and then to the "sparrow."
The Baron nods to Saros, and Saros says "We don't quite know what to think. There have always been rumors that the forest was haunted. We never believed them, since nothing out of the ordinary happened. It was only within the last few months that people started vanishing."
"Could be bandits looking to use the forest's reputation to rob those who don't believe it and want to prove their bravery. Could be northern barbarians who've come down to avoid a bad arctic winter. Or it could be that the forest really is haunted. We don't quite know what to think."
Saros thinks for a moment, and says "If it was bandits, they weren't the common rabble we sometimes get around these parts. The royal guardsmen accompanying my lord's son were some of my best. Simple bandits, no matter how many, couldn't bring them down."
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Ursinus nods, deep in thought, If you thought it was something guards could have taken care of, you would have simply sent more. Our mere presence suggests something more... sinister is underway. If you don't mind my asking, before the disappearances started, did anything strange happen? Earthquakes, storms, unseasonable weather, agitations among the local wildlife?
The elf steeples his fingers and leans towards Saros and the Baron.
Anything you can recall or recall being informed of will help us.

Alexander was glad that Ursinus was asking the the important questions for him. He'll be working with smart people for once, even though the elf didn't look like the normal trackers he worked with in the past. Still if he's as good as he says he is then this should be a problem to find what their looking for.
"Northern barbarians wouldn't just kill people just because they've been discovered. Their too proud and honorable, despite their titles to resort to just sneaking around. As you've said, any normal bandits shouldn't have been a problem for your local guards. Frankly gentlemen, and forgive my harsh words, but I find it amusing that you would ignore tales of your woods being haunted. Sometimes when you ignore something long enough, it becomes strong enough to become a real threat. However I'll add on another question that my new elven friend here has given: why are the woods considered haunted in the first place?"
Jordle listens intently to Saros' explanation, and then each of the questions as they follow. As Alexander finishes his inquiry, he interjects:
"I should remind you, gentlemen, that many a rumored haunt has proved nothing more than a glamer upon closer inspection. Reality is a terribly subjective thing."
He strokes his beard and smiles to himself.

"Still all the same my dear gnome, it doesn't hurt to hear the legends every now and then. After all, where would we be without legends to guide us to our fortunes in the end? You were saying baron?"
Alexander winked at Jordle playfully. Oh yes, I'm going to enjoy seeing where this journey takes me.
Reality is subjective? I wonder what he means by that. No time to ask now, plenty of time later. In contrast to his internal monologue, Ursinus says aloud, Even if these disappearances prove to merely be caused by illusion, this suggests that there is an illusionist behind them. One not interesting in returning those lost to his glamer and just as dangerous, if not more, than a ravenous beast of legend.
If it is a beast of legend, then we must consider why it has not been active until now. It will also be valuable to know were the legends came from in the first place. Seldom do fabled beasts awaken without reason and understanding a foe is the most crucial step in defeating them.
Be our foe man, beast or gossamer trick of the light, it is still our foe. And equally dangerous in any incarnation.

Apologies for the delay. Obviously the holidays weren't the best time to start a campaign. My schedule will be busy until tomorrow. Then it'll be back to regular posting.
PS: Feel free to roll you knowledge checks in public.
Jordle doesn't know anything specific about the local legends or historical events. Just that the forest is one of the larger ones on the continent. No stories of significance to the current situation can be recalled.
Ursinus, on the other hand, knows that several centuries ago, a part of the forest actually was haunted. It was a focal point for the gathering of ghosts, shades, and spectres.
Many centuries ago, a group of druids, rangers, and clerics of the wilder gods decided to change that. They went into the forest, fought their way to the center of the haunting, and purified the whole area. It destroyed the conflux of negative energy that was drawing the ghosts to the area. This tale is far from common knowledge. It may well be forgotten except by a small group of secluded scholars and the Druidic descendants of the original men and women who purified the forest the first time.
More recently, a dragon had moved into the area around a small chain of forested mountains a moderate distance away from the town. It claimed the whole area as its territory and demanded tribute from Dragondale or the dragon would destroy the town. The stories say that Baron Thallman personally killed the dragon in an epic magical duel. Whether there is truth to these stories, the Baron hasn't publicly said.
The Baron shakes his head at Ursinus. "No natural disasters of any sort preceded the disappearances."
Saros chimes in. "And of course we investigated tales of the forest being haunted. We discovered nothing suggesting such, and dismissed the rumors as simple fiction. In any forest around the world, there is bound to be something or another lurking. But not a full-blown haunted forest. We've never had problems with people vanishing in these numbers and not being found soon after. Whatever this problem is, it's new."
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Ursinus remains largely still for some time before saying to no one in particular, New, or perhaps older than any living remember.
He focuses on Baron Thallman, the far-away look dispelled from his eyes, I merely asked because nature seldom allows the awakening of ancient terrors to go uncelebrated. However, tales of your recent escapades do not escaped me, Baron. Slaying a dragon is no easy task, I am led to believe. I assume that you, a mage of exceptional power, have made attempts to scry upon your son. Have these inquiries revealed nothing?

Jordle's existing smile broadens a bit as Ursinus speaks. It seems my new allies are not entirely wet behind the ears. Much better than working with that drooling barbarian back east.
He turns to the Baron.
"My dear Baron, it pains me equally to turn the conversation back to the subject of your beloved son. But it also behooves us to investigate, wherever the facts may lie. Have you any notable enemies in the region? Could there be a political motive and a mortal body behind these hauntings? Where a puppet is to be found, the puppeteer will also be close at hand."

Alexander felt something was just off about this, but then again it was going to be his job to find out in the end. He felt he was getting all the information out of his client as he was going to. Especially sense the others were touching on most of the important questions.
"Alright then...I'll take the job, and if these two are also willing to join me then I will gladly accept their help."
Humans Ursinus thinks, they never cease to amuse, do they? He gives Alexander one of his rare genuine smiles. It transforms his face from a cold, slightly alien mask into something much more open and relateable.
I'll try my hardest to keep you alive, boy. His grin widens No promises.
