I want to see how the Avengers can fit into this if at all. I think I remember rumors of black widow having a role in the pilot but I want to see Thor or Iron man involved in minor ways too
If it were someone else making this there'd be the significant potential for it to become a name-droppy, guest star of the week, crapfest. But Whedon has an excellent track record of making quality television shows (Buffy, Angel, and Firefly were all great), so I'm on board.
Plus Coulson is just a really good character and the actor who plays him does a great job.

I think part of the point of the series is to avoid making this hinge on a 'Avenger guest of the week'. I'd rather not see any of the film franchise characters, and instead get cameos by other Marvel Characters. For instance, there is a rumor going around that the powered character seen in previous for the pilot is Rage (Link to Wiki).
I'd much rather see 'Street Level' Marvel Characters show up (Luke Cage, Danny Rand, Moon Knight, etc) than the big screen heroes.
Well I saw it tonight and I thought it was pretty cool. I had the superhero comic book feel to it without being stupid about it. I like how it takes place in the same universe, but so far the big name players are only name dropped rather than shown. The whole "Tahiti" thing is obviously something they will explore in the future. I hope it isn't too hokey.

It's Joss Whedon. It'll be hokey, but you'll love it.
Anyone else thought the black guy was Luke Cage at first?
That's what I told my wife when we saw the promo for the first time way back when. A couple weeks later she read something about it not being Luke Cage. I was racking my brain trying to figure out who else it could be.
I will say it was a little bit of a letdown that the first "superhuman" they interact with turns out to be an everyday guy with the stuff from IM3.
So the ad spots are saying "Watch it live at 8/7c!" Has the meaning of "live" changed while I wasn't looking?
I guess they've twisted it to mean "the broadcast premiere"? Or maybe it just means "broadcast" (so you know, you get the "live" commercials) as opposed to On Demand, website or Netflix type programs?
I thought it was a good first episode. Coulson was very cool, I think he's going to be a great lead character. Ming Na-Wen's character was also setup well. The other three were ok but nothing special, kind of cardboard cutouts, but you have to expect some level of that in a premiere. Skye was not as annoying as the computer know-it-all girl on Arrow, but not far off and I hope they reign in the "computers are magic" stuff a bit more in future.
The interrogation scene was very Whedon-esque which was good. There was a ton of name-dropping in the episode which was mildly annoying, but again, forgivable in the premiere since they have to bring the audience up to speed and establish the setting. As long as they don't keep doing it all the time it's fine.
I've heard rumours that the super-character might be Rage. But the origin and name are different, and if they never refer to him by his secret identity anyway (ie if they always just call him Mike) then it doesn't really matter.
Nice to see Cobie Smulders for continuity even if it's only for one episode, also nice to see Firefly alum. Ron Glass.
although I'm not sure whether them stepping back from the device after it was announced to be radioactive was funny or a lame attempt to whedon something

Taking bets now that he offered either free/exceptionally low money for his appearance on the basis that he likes having an excuse to be Nick Fury for a day
Right, but, 616 is a probably easier to work in as an injoke/nod.
Solmancer,
To me, when we say timeline thats like with back to the future or something. There are multiple timelines in those movies, but they all take place in the same universe.
So the difference between Marvel 616 and 199999 is which universe it is, although modern marvel has tried to avoid using Earth-Number for awhile since DC has always made that more of their thing. Just taking that from a Quesada quote from the 616 wikipedia page, and the most recent examples of its usage are from, like, 2005
So, I guess my takeaway is that universe is the word to use instead of timeline.
They keep referring to Tahiti, or Fiji, or wherever dude went for recovery, as a "magical" place. They seem to emphasize magical. Makes me wonder if they are eluding to something down the line.

Of course they're alluding to something, the mystery surrounding Coulson's general not being dead-ness is the main through-plot for the season. Clearly there's more to his sudden and impossible recovery than even Coulson knows, revealing that is what this season is about.
Joss Whedon is my jam.
I am very excited!
