So what did everyone think of the premier? I liked it. There was twice that I mentioned things they did in the comics to a friend saying "I wonder if they'll do that in the show". Then minutes later they both happened to Hershel.
I thought it was friggin' awesome!
It gives me high hopes again, after a... lackluster... season two.

Season 3 is off to a great start. I certainly had my reservations that they may "jump the shark" this go around.
Why the hate for season two? I thought it was done well. It was indeed slow at times and perhaps they spent just a little too much time on the farm, but it was a necessary build up to end the season the way they did.

In hindsight, yeah you are right = it was a necessary build up for the season end. I guess it was just too strung out and took too long to get there for my liking. But don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the season very much.
I'd rather watch a "bad" season of The Walking Dead rather than any of the talent-based reality shows, CSI/Law & Order knockoffs. Seriously, enough is enough. I'm so tired of talent competitions, crime solving and/or courtroom shows. UGH.
But yeah... season three has started off with a BANG and should only get better based on the hints and glimpses we've seen and/or read about.

honestly, the show lost me on the "little too slow on the farm". Literally, I stopped watching it and haven't felt the desire to start again. The pacing was just too slow, to the point where everyone knew the girl was dead and then they kept looking for a few more episodes just to make sure we all get that they really wanted to find her alive.
It's not a bad show or anything, but I can state as an absolute fact that the show lost at least one viewer because they spent too much time not doing anything.
I loved the season opener. My inner OCD/Survivalist loved the progressions of how they were clearing the prison and how they've developed into a tactical unit.

I would honestly say you should start watching again from the penultimate episode of last season. That's when things kicked up again, and you probably wouldn't miss anything from the previous episodes.

that's certainly your prerogative but I think its a silly reason to give up on such a great show. Even with its "lulls", the end of the season made up for them exponentially.

+1. I say give it another chance, sometimes the second go around is better than the first. I watched season two again on netflix right before season three premiered so I could refresh my memory and the second time around it didn't feel nearly as slow as the first. There were still some parts that lagged a bit but it was definitely better the second time.
I agree with what y'all have said about the most recent episode. Season 3 is looking to be a good one. A big article I read about it also gives me high hopes. All the cast and writers and producers and stuff all say season 3 is going to be amazing and they all feel really good about it.
It will be interesting to see how they handle Rick and his group meeting up with the governor and his town. I have a feeling they'll start on good terms and things will go very bad shortly after. Kind of like the comics but on better terms in the beginning.
Does anybody else get the feeling that Randall's group is part of/winds up in Woodbury?
It would certainly make sense. A roving band of looters like that would have stripped the area clean by now and either moved on or found a place to settle down.

Eh, it's not a matter of giving up. It's simply that I got bored with it and moved on. The point of me raising that is to say that situations like mine are precisely why they should have (in my opinion) paced it faster.
I fully believe that the season finale and the new opener were epic awesomeness. But I am no longer going to sit down and watch it as it comes out and wait with bated breath for the next episode. Sure, if its on and I happen to be watching tv I'll watch it.
I may eventually watch the last half of season two on netflix. But its extremely unlikely that I'll be a hardcore fan again.

the second time around probably didn't feel as slow because you didn't have to wait 7 full days just to watch another hour of them standing around on the farm. You can instead watch the 5(6?) farm episodes in quick succession.
Id imagine Merle will making an appearance either there or in the prison as well
They mentioned this in that article I read (was in entertainment weekly, I forget what week but it was recent). Don't open the spoiler if you don't want to know...
Merle indeed lives in Woodbury. He's got a big apparatus thing on his stump that has a really big blade on it. The article said he works very close with the governor but it didn't say if they actually like each other or if they're just in a situation where they can be mutually beneficial to each other. The big question they posed is how Merle and Daryl will react to finding out they are on opposing sides of an eventual bloodbath. The thing I wonder about is will Merle cut off Rick's hand as revenge or with the governor do it for him?

That is a very good point, I did watch them all in about 4 or 5 days. I also had lower expectations going in as I remember it being a let down the first time.
Even still, if you have netflix I highly recommend checking out the last 2 or 3 episodes of the season.
While this season is already starting off stronger than season two, lots of zombie killing is more of a visceral stimulant than an emotional/intellectual stimulant. That said, I'm expecting the drama and tension to start kicking in pretty heavy with the Governor showing up next episode. I'm nervous about what's going to happen and he hasn't even shown up on screen yet!

My co-worker and I were actually discussing this today. My three theories: 1) Merle as we know he makes his return this season, 2) someone from the helicopter that we keep seeing crash in the previews (the lurking is obviously before take-off :D) or 3) someone from the Governor's compound. They keep teasing the governor and how Andrea and Michonne will wind up there. I figure they have to tie the prison crew to the town somehow other than Andrea and Michonne seeing as how the pair doesn't even know where the prison is.
What I do know is this season should be completely nuts!

I think number 1 might be more likely.
In the comic, though, I vaguely remember the group encountering Mayberry by following a helicopter or some other accident. The Governor has them followed back to the Prison.
I don't think 2 is likely as a helicopter is WAY too noisy to for any sort of stealth mission.
I don't think 3 is likely either, but who knows. At this point we are only following the spirit of the comic.

initially I was of the same line of thinking, but it just doesnt "fit" to me. We know that Woodbury (governer/Merle/etc) has themselves concerned with Michonne/Andrea in the next episode and as best as I can tell its not in the immediate vicinity of the prison. Instead im wondering if this is where father and/or son from season one make their reappearance.
Season 3 is proving to be almost as good, if not complete better, as season one. The first episode of this season was amazing in terms of emotional drama and survival action, with an ending cliff hanger that pulls us into the next episode. Episode 2 showcased not only raw emotion between Rick's groups concerning Herschel, but it had a lot of dynamic tension with the prisoners:
The final confrontation between Rick and the Hispanic inmate had me on the edge of my seat, and the instant that Rick killed the guy was definitely unexpected, as was Rick killing the small Black inmate (or leaving him to die really).
Does anybody else get the feeling that Randall's group is part of/winds up in Woodbury?
I haven't read the comics, but from the previews that I have seen, isn't Woodbury the community formed by the Governor? If so, I don't think Randall's group would necessarily be a part of it. The Governor's town looks like a fascist state with him as the sole charismatic leader; a place with supreme order and stability, but no freedom for its populace (the episode preview has Michonne or Andrea complaining about their weapons being taken and being unable to leave the town, implying that personal freedom doesn't exist in Woodbury, only safety at the hands of authority). Randall's group was nothing more then 30-something guys, who seem from all evidence nothing more than marauders, thugs, and barbarians, wandering around for whatever they can loot or rape. Something tells me that these two groups probably would not get along with each other.
I finally got a chance to watch the episode last night. It did not disappoint! Only two episodes in and this season is looking to be the best one so far. They seem to be steering it back towards the comics little by little. They are still a long way off from the comics but they are getting better. I read in an interview with Kirkman about a year or so ago that he doesn't want it to follow the comics too closely because then everyone who's read them would know what to expect. Which makes sense, it is nice to wonder what's going to happen next on the show.
As for the last episode...
The whole confrontation with the inmates was perfect! It captured the essence of that event from the comics without being a carbon copy. I watched it with my best friend and after about 2 minutes of Rick talking with the hispanic guy I said "If it's anything like the comics Rick will kill that guy by the end of the episode". I'm so glad I was right! Now I can't help but wonder how much else they are going to follow. If they follow them closely...
I think theres a good chance that the smaller white guy who pleaded for his life will end up being a crazy killer, and the big black guy who didn't will end up being a trusted member of the group. I'd like for both of those things to happen.
I'm really anxious for the Woodbury stuff to start. I'm wondering if the show will have the balls to make the governor as evil as he was in the comic. Mainly,
will he end up raping and torturing Michonne?
I love that they're doing the whole helicopter crash thing. I had forgotten that that's how the two groups find out about each other. As far as the person watching from the bushes...I've thought about it a lot and as of now I think it's got to be Merle. But really it could be anyone's guess. Maybe they'll introduce another group that wants the prison to break things away from the comics in a way we wouldn't expect. All I know is I can't wait to find out!
Hershel to live it really did surprise me . About the thing who was watching carol, I think it is merl but it sure did remind me of how the hunters started.

It was odd watching an entire episode without team Rick in it.
Though,
I'm glad they've shown the Governor's true colors. I was wondering how long they would wait to show how nuts he is. I love that they included the fish tanks full of zombie heads.
Though I wonder if they'll also include his zombie daughter...
Another great episode. The girl playing Michonne is absolutely nailing the part. I'm excited to see more of her.
@Dimir, I've been wondering the same thing. I feel like that was a big part of the character though and I think leaving it out would be a bad idea. I guess we'll see.
The Governor on the show feels quite different from the one in the comics to me. Sure he's a crazy dick head but he seems almost remorseful about the things he does, like he's doing them because he feels he has to. Whereas the Governor in the comics was a sadistic bastard who took great pleasure in what he was doing. The main thing I really want to see though is...
The arena where they make people fight each other and fight walkers. I think one of my favorite moments in the comics is when the Governor is telling Rick that they keep the walkers around and feed them and when Rick asks what they feed to them the Governor replies with, "Well stranger...we feed them strangers." I want to see that moment in the show so bad!
Another solid episode. I think dedicating the whole show to this part of the story was a good idea. Better to get it out of the way now than slip in 5 minute bits and pieces over the course of several episodes.
In regard to the Governer being "remorseful", I dont think I agree. Rather, I found him to be very calculated instead. I think his appearance portrays him be be more "human" than he really is. I didnt see a single ounce of remorse when he took out the soldiers and his speech to the townspeople afterwords was simply a method of control, making him appear to be a compassionate leader.
