UNC women's soccer. 21 national championships in 30 years. The NCAA established the championship tournament in 1982. UNC won 16 of the first 19 national titles (1982-2000). In that time period, they had an overall record of 433-15-11 with 3 undefeated/untied seasons (1991-1993), 5 undefeated seasons with 1 tie (84,86,87,89), and 1 undefeated season with 3 ties (1988).
In a 10 season run from 1984 to 1993, they were 223-3-9 overall with 8 undefeated seasons and 9 national championships.
Dan gable's Iowa state wrestling team. 15 national championships in 21 years. I can't think of anyone in any other sport anywhere near that.

In the major professional sports, there is so much turn around decade to decade that its difficult to deem one team or another a perennial powerhouse, with the exception of the New York Yankees. As far as football goes, and depending on how far back you want to go, the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and New York Giants have all had dominant histories in the league. The easiest way to break down that sport is by decade. So, starting in the post-merger era (post 1969) we have the 70's Steelers with Terry Bradshaw and the Steel Curtain defense, 80's 49'ers with Joe Montana and the West Coast offense, 90's have the Bills (4 straight Super Bowls from 1990-93), Packers with Brett Farve, and the Broncos with John Elway. The 2000's started off with the Patriots, and that's the last truly dominant team we've seen in a while.
They were just too good. On top of that, if jordan has stuck around, and the management had not been so ungodly stupid in 99, you'd see championships from 91-03, maybe longer because jordan might not have even bothered to retire.
90s Cowboys. Best nfl team ever to take the field.
So long as you ignore the 90's 49ers team... They were rivals for this reason.
Other teams to mention:
88' - 92' Oakland Ahteleics, Yankees from just about any year, Boston Red Sox (Current and Past)
90's Chicago Bulls, late 90's Sacremento Kings, Lakers when they had Shaq and Kobi
Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers
I'm sure there is a lot I missed, but this is just from the top of my head.

I disagree. They were as dominant as say, the early 90's Buffalo Bills were because they made three straight World Series, but they only won the title once during that span.
Granted making three straight is definitely impressive, but when I think of "dominant" I think of winning the whole thing multiple times, as the other teams listed in this thread.
I'd put the early 1970 A's on the list before the "bash-brother" era; Oakland won it three straight years ('72-'74) and won the West Division from 1971-75.

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.
If you consider it a team, Jimmie Johnson and his 5(?) championships. The guy was dominant for 5 years.
I'm not a NASCAR fan or viewer, but my brother and a friend/co-worker of mine is, so I'll say this on their behalf:
I'd consider it a dominant "team". Yeah Johnson is doing the driving and the brunt work, but it takes more than his skill; he has a pit crew doing all the behind the scenes stuff = car maintenance, a crew chief barking things into his headset while he's racing, etc.. So yeah, I definitely consider his five out of the last six years a dominant "team." Oh, and he's currently tied for first with only three races to go.

I think it's safe to say that when a sport organization has to change rules because you are that good it says something.
UCLA's Center was so good the NCAAB outlawed dunking for the time he was there. That is dominance.

Well of course I ignore the 90s 49ers. The Cowboys won three, the 9ers won one. As for the person who posted the Bills as a 90s team....4 straight superbowls means nothing if you lose all 4. The NFL breaks down like this:
70s Steelers
80s 49ers
90s Cowboys
00s Patriots.
With the Cowboys as the finest of them all.

What I meant was, yes they were excellent teams and its impressive to make three straight World Series or four straight Super Bowls, but I don't consider them "dominant."
s'all good though.

Also the early 80's Islanders. I do believe they were the last team to win 4 straight in any of the american sports leagues.

This one I looked up, but Germany's national dressage teams dominated the Olympics and World championships from mid seventies up until 2012.
