A quarter-century after his ground-breaking Sandman comic was launched, Neil Gaiman is returning to the character that made him famous with a six-issue prequel about Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams.
Gaiman – currently basking in the glory of phenomenal reviews and booming sales for his first adult novel in eight years, The Ocean at the End of the Lane – has penned a limited series that tells a new story about the much-loved character he created for DC comics in 1988 and which ran for 75 issues.
Sandman was initially published as part of the main DC comics line but in 1993 was incorporated into the publisher's new Vertigo imprint which offered edgier, more adult comics. The first issue introduced Morpheus, or Dream, one of the immortal siblings known as the Endless. The ruler of a kingdom known as the Dreaming, the character was an instant hit, and when Gaiman introduced Dream's sister Death as a cocksure goth girl he won over a legion of fans seemingly for ever.
This October sees the first issue of the new comic, Sandman: Overture, produced with artist JH Williams III, 25 years since the first issue of Sandman (it had a January 1989 cover date but was published in October 1988).

As Sandman and the Endless is what got us into reading graphic novels I am very happy yet a little apprehensive about this. I hope he can live up to the very high standards the fans are going to put on him.

I'm of the opinion that Sandman was good because of editorial oversight. That is, Gaiman+editors=gold. His stand alone works weren't too impressive, and his best novel, to me, was Good Omens, likely because it was a collab with Pratchet rather than Gaiman calling all the shots. If DC still have editorial oversight, I expect good things.
I hope the art improves though. The entire Vertigo line's artwork looks like ass. JH William III's work looks solid, but Vertigo comics is known to change artists often.

First of all, it's a mini series. Second it's JH Williams the frigging III! The guy who did amazing stuff with Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, and Warren Ellis. They are not changing artists...
Looking forward to purchasing The Sandman Omnibus I & II plus Overture. Always been a fan of Neil G and his works including Neverwhere, The Graveyard Book, American Gods, and Stardust.
Well, let me reiterate on one part of that statement: Stardust the book was okay, but it could have been far better if the author(s) elaborated on his adventures rather than summarizing a few weeks into a paragraph. Might have been more of an interesting read.
This might be slightly off-topic but there has been some new rumors concerning a Sandman movie and Neil Gaiman himself was quoted as saying that he wants either Tom Hiddleston or Benedict Cumberbatch as Morpheus.
All I can say is PLEASE LET IT BE CUMBERBATCH
edit: JGL is also rumored to be involved. Lucien would be a cool fit for him
David S Goyer and JGL are involved in producing an adaption of the Sandman for the big screen. Still crossing my fingers for Cumberbatch as the star.
I am really torn at this. Yes I would be very happy with Cumberbatch playing Morpheous. But I also want him to make more Sherlock episodes, we are not getting enough of those.

FYI, Cumberbatch pretty much confirmed season 4 of Sherlock. We'll be seeing at least 6 more episodes before he walks away from this.
It all really depends on what other film projects he plans on taking. I think he just finished principle photography of the imitation game and he signed on to star in another film. I could reasonably see him taking up the offer to star in Sandman if he doesn't pick up anything else.
Honestly, Cumberbatch would be by far the best actor for Dream. It's 50% his voice and 50% his looks
