Hi All,
I'm not much up on comic books, but I do enjoy the movies. I was curious as to how powerful Magneto was in comparison to the other mutants. Can he control only metal?
The slightly-less-short answer to your question is that most of Marvel's writers have an Insane-Clown-Possee-level understanding of science, and so basically just treat Magneto as a magical wizard who can do anything.
His daughter is even more powerful. But she actually is a magical wizard, so there's an excuse.

Vive, vale. Siquid novisti rectius istis,
candidus inperti; si nil, his utere mecum.
Magneto is a master of electromagnetic fields. He can use these fields to levitate himself or create force fields. My favorite show of his massive power was when he stripped Wolverine of his Adamantium! Magneto is my favorite X-Men villain because he's smart, awesomely powerful, and he really believes what he's doing is right.

He can control metal and magnetic fields.
Unfortunately, comic (and movie) writers have poor grasp on science. He can use his powers to do practically _anything_, as long as the writers sneak in the words "iron", "metal", "electricity" and "magnets" somewhere along the explanation.
Magneto's power is, for all practical purposes, limitless.
"Dude, since when was Magneto capable of writing a nobel prize winning piece of poetry?"
"Well, he controlled the iron in his blood, so he just made more blood enter his brain and so he can write so well. Then because iron enters everyone's brain, he can read the minds of everyone on the planet and so he's famiiliar with the angst everyone feels."

Mine too, but not just in the Marvel universe... he's one of my Top Five favorite villains in any medium.
And yes, stripping Wolvie's the Admanatium was bad-ass.
I'm a bit foggy, but in the comics didn't he also rip the iron out of someone's blood (similar to what was shown in X2)?

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.
So I have been doing more reading and wanted to know if Magneto was considered an Omega Level Mutant?
Also, if he can control of electromagnetic fields, then in theory he could tear apart any matter by creating an extremely strong field at the molecular level to cause bonds in molecules to break. Am I off base on this? Would it break the Marvel Universe if a guy could go around utterly destroying matter?

Franklyn Richards is a reality warper...on a universal scale. Galactus, yes that Galactus, is his Herald. Believe you me, there's nothing you could add to the Marvel Universe that could break it.
Magneto is an omega level mutant. But to be honest those arent' exactly rare: Cyclops, Ice-Man, Storm, Professor X, Jean Grey, Rogue, Apocalypse, Dr. Sinister, Any mutant who's last name is Summers.
I'm no Marvel expert, but I do know that Iceman is omega level. although each of the others you mentioned are exceptionally powerful, I don't believe that any of them save Jean Grey has been classified Omega level. as for who would win in a fight, I'm sure Iceman could be beaten by 1 of those, especially if it' plot related.
Edit: after talking to my friend, who is a marvel expert, it seems I'm wrong. The above mentioned are omega level, he wasn't sure about rogue though, and said hearing apocolypse being called omega level was news to him. Anyways, disavow anything I said on the matter.
Ice-Man is really really really freakishly powerful. But he's got self-doubt which keeps him from using his powers to their full potential. In one X-Men: First Class story, in an alternate dimension his icy form was the size of a mountain and altered the weather patterns causing a global nuclear winter. Afraid of becoming that he inherited his trademark doubt.
If only Ice-Man had been one of the Phoenix Five. I can dream.
Apocalypse is considered the most powerful mutant of all time, having been born before the great flood and possessing complete control over every cell in his body.
Magneto ranks pretty highly though. Like his long time friend and enemy, Professor X, he fervently believes in constantly practicing and building mastery over your powers. Because of this dedication to mastery, he has honed his powers beyond what many mutants have.

There was some stupid storyline where he would've been Cyclopse's brother, basically making everyone a part of the Summer's family.

If I recall that was the original plan. He was gonna be one of Corsair's many many many bastards. Except he was gonna be taken back in time and end up retroactively the first mutant.
That plan was scrapped though, and Poccy became his own person.

Yeah, something like that.

Ice-Man is more powerful then Apocalypse, Cyclops, Rogue, Dr. Sinister, Storm, and Magneto? Apocalypse has won contests of wills against Professor X.
That reminds me, Shadow King should be on the Omega list.
