Joke is "faithful" since Golden age had him a killer psycho clown gangster (Jack Nicolson) and Leto is playing a modern version.
If you have to use caveats like "modern version" and Nicholson's version then it isn't really accurate, is it?
Or you know Dc comics is 70+ years so almost every character has been changed and adapted for the times, so saying that a a movie Joker is faithful to the comics is a very wide statement in which clarity I felt was needed.
Also since most of the DCUE is gonna be based on the New 52, it is clear you can't really say how faithful characters are if you can't remember it correctly. Also my point wasn't that they where copy and pasted from the comics but they had the core themes that defined the characters in the comics, something that they haven't done the best with Superman or Batman.

The Joker has never been a tatted-up gangbanger, not even in the New 52.

Who says the DCEU will be based on the New 52? BvS certainly isn't. Suicide Squad is barely based on the New 52. Wonder Woman looks to take no inspiration from the New 52. And the New 52 was a pathetically failed endeavor that DC Comics is already undoing.

What would you define as "taking inspiration from the New 52" as opposed to the rest of the DC comics continuity? Setting aside specific plot points, they're not that different. It's not like the Marvel Ultimate universe versus their regular universe, where there are very pronounced thematic distinctions. Frankly, there couldn't have been pronounced thematic distinctions, because a lack of unifying editorial vision or control was one of the major reasons why the New 52 was received so poorly. But anyway, movie Wonder Woman is far more different from either New 52 Wonder Woman or classic Wonder Woman than they are from each other: she's never been an immortal or fought in World War I before. (Okay, yes, she is an immortal, but not in that Highlander "living through history" sense. She's no older in the narrative than Bats or Supes.)
Now, on TV, The Flash is doing "Flashpoint" this season, so that's taking inspiration from the New 52.
