Excited for anything Star Wars, excited for some of the characters, not excited about the overly dramatic feel of the trailer. It's got a kind of Allegiant/Hunger Games feel to it. But I'm obviously going to go see this like 1030542098x, so what can you do? Also, despite Forrest Whittaker striking out in sci-fi in the past, I think its awesome that he's in this--he looks like such a bad ass, I can't wait!
As for old characters, I saw Mon Mothma, maybe a young Tarkin, maaaaaybe Darth vader, who did I miss?
Super stoked for this one. It looks like the new movie I was expecting when I went to see the New Hope remake. Very excited to see some new Star wars characters in universe.
Looks good so far. I enjoy the idea of Star Wars films that don't follow the main storyline. The universe is just so grand in scope that the possibilities for narratives are virtually endless...
In terms of the trailer, it looks like standard block buster action fare. That being said, it still looks promising enough. Looking forward to see if any of the classic Star Wars characters will make cameo appearances, or perhaps have substantial roles within the narrative.

Mon Mothma is obviously in it, and from other sources I believe Grand Moff Tarkin will be the heavy. No word on any Dark Lords of the Sith, although there's some unidentified black cloakery going on in the trailer.

I assumed that was the Emperor because there's royal guards in the room.

The film looks like it's going to be pretty good. It looked better each time I watched the trailer. It's nice to see the galaxy expanded through films that aren't only about the "main plot". Although, it would be nice to have more anthology films that aren't directly tied to the episodes. Both this and the unnecessary Han Solom fil are explicitly tied to the events of the mainmain movies and it would be nice to see some expansion of the universe that has nothing to do with the Skywalkers.
On the flip side, the constant crying of sexist man-children complaining that the main character of this movie is a woman is grating.

I will say it like many of the "sexist man-children" say it and clearly so you can also understand:
We don't care if the main protagonist is a woman or not. We don't like Mary Sue's being thrusted down our throats and especially in a good franchise. Why can't we get good movies with good characters without having this crap being jammed down our throats?
Let me repeat it:
We don't care what sex the main protagonist is. Just make a good movie for the sake of the movie and not the politics.
Contrast this with Leia from the original star wars trilogy: she was an important part of the story plot and a compelling character without being a Mary Sue.
Now about the trailer: looks great. I am glad that this will finally revolve around the star wars universe rather than the Skywalkers.
My biggest worry about this movie, Sue aside, is that Gary Whitta and Gareth Edwards are involved in the making of the movie. They haven't been renowned for any great films that I liked so far. I hope this will be Offset by Lucas and John Knoll. Some of the movies where Gary and Gareth got involved in had a LOT of talking and not a lot of actual doing anything or were directed at a younger audience.

It baffles me how anyone can actually label this character a "mary sue" when we know nothing about her and absolutely no one has seen the film yet. It makes absolutely no sense and in several cases it is blatantly obvious that several people who have made this claim about the film are doing so preemptively because the lead is female.
If you(you being in a general sense) have a legitimate criticism of the trailer perhaps or of any other material as it is released that is perfectly fine. But preemptively labeling this character as a "mary sue" has no grounds on which to stand.

Hang on.
No one is "cramming" anything down your throat. The obvious argument here is you don't have to see the film. However, no one is making films (or TV shows for that matter) with female or minority leads that are negatively impacting the quality of the film, so it doesn't matter. If episode 7 had any problems they didn't stem from the fact that Daisy Ridley and John Boyega were the leads of that film.
Truthfully, no matter what context you try to make your argument under, you're still always going to sound sexist. It really shouldn't ever matter the sex, color, or what have you of a character on the screen so long as the film is good. My suggestion is to shut up about it.

Rey is not any more a Mary Sue than Anakin, Obi-Wan, Luke or any other Force Sensitive in any of the films. In fact, Anakin, at 10-years-old, is more of a Mary Sue than Rey could dream of being. So it's really hard to not see the Rey complaints as anything more than sexism or just reactions to perceived 'politics'. Star Wars now has two female leads (and only four female main characters), out of 8 films... I'm sorry you feel like that's pushing some kind of agenda.
Of course Donnie Yen is winning using only a stick and martial arts skill against stormtroopers with laser blasters.
I mean, the cartoons have been pushing this a bit too, but at close range I imagine it's easier. Every time we see hand-to-hand fighting here, it's in close quarters.

She did kinda master the force just about instantly and she is the best at everything she does in the movie. I don't think that makes her a Mary Sue though but her lack of character flaws make her just about as interesting as Anakin and Obi-wan in my opinion. But this is more of a problem with Jedi characters in general than with Rey specifically.

I think I'll just stop here, as it's not worth derailing this thread over, but the one thing I will say is having watched it last week with a more critical eye, I still think people are overblowing it.
In any case, Rogue One looks amazing. I'm hoping there are at least hints to the Dark Forces series.
Yes this movie looks like it has great potential. Very interested to see if this means more non Jedi focused Star Wars films. (not that I don't like the Jedi but its a huge universe and the films have only ever been about Jedi so far.)

In the old Expanded Universe, honestly the best stories were about the non-Jedi. The X-Wing novels in particular were just great books.

Exactly. That is what I would love to see a movie about. Heck I would even go for a grey jedi protagonist.

Just by going at the trailer alone, the two scenes had him surrounded by at least 4 troopers and the next scene he beats one with a stick with another already lying on the ground. I know it's a meme at this point that stormtroopers can't do anything right but I think they're really pushing it to the absolute limit. Granted I could be wrong and there could've been massive help that we don't see or Donnie Yen could be portraying some super overpowered individual.

Anakin and Luke are more Mary Sues than Rey could ever be because Rey's entire backstory (summarized quite well in her introduction, I thought) is one of surviving hardship alone. Neither Luke or Anakin were pampered, but they both had family and places of reasonable safety to retreat to (and also Anakin was like 7 when he saved Naboo, which is bull***** even with The Force's help) while Rey lived in a broken down war machine and scavenged trash for a decade so you'd expect her to be good at all kinds of mechanical and combat related stuff. Also, note how she's not actually that good a pilot and how she almost dies in every light saber fight against a decent foe because she's using a plasma sword like a wooden staff.
The existence of people other than white guys in starring roles is a political act, because as everyone knows, white male* is the human default. I'm pushing up on the border of trolling, but that's what it seems like when I step into nerd fandom sometimes. Like, if the gender and sex of characters doesn't actually matter, why whine about it?

Yeah, it seems like the complaint is basically that anyone other than a white dude in a starring role is some sort of grand political statement.
