I kind of call bull*****. Yes, it might do slightly better than it deserves as people go to watch the train wreck, but the level of bad reviews will keep way more people who might have gone to see it away than they draw in.
Rights to franchises (including movies AND merchandise) expire every 10 years or so UNLESS you make a new movie. This is the same move Sony pulled with Spiderman. The point is NOT to make a good movie but to KEEP the rights and potentially sell them. As such, any director, any actor, any storyline will do.
Will not see.
I'll say it straight up: racebending cast for some politically correct reason almost NEVER achieves any form of success. If you cast an actor of a certain ethnicity to play another ethnicity, it is not well received. If you cast actors of differing ethnicities opposite to that of the source material, it also flunks (MOST of the time). The only changes I have seen that were anywhere near ok were Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury and Aaron Taylor Johnson as Quicksilver (the change being Eastern European).
Here are 2 counter examples in the opposite: Mike Myers as an Indian Guru in The Love Guru which involves a white actor playing an indian; an ALL INDIAN and WHITE cast in Avatar: The last Airbender rather than the original asian/inuit ethnic diversity. Nobody likes racebending. For any reason. Sometimes it works. Most of the time is doesn't.
What is the problem with a black/asian/indian James Bond? Everyone who has ever loved the franchise recognize and think of a british man as 007. Just because someone felt that we needed one of differing ethnicity doesn't make it right and typically will not sell well (like the walt disney reboot of cinderella with a black princess and asian prince).
Personally, I wouldn't go see a white Black Panther, a hispanic Spiderman, an asian Captain America, an indian James Bond, a black Jackie Chan or an arabic Dracula. Those are not the characters I grew up with and most of this racebending doesn't even make sense!
My solution is as simple as ever: don't touch the source material (in fact work with the original creators); just make new material. You think people want to see an all female cast of ghostbuster? Make it but don't call it the same; you end up scorning the fans. If it sells, it was meant to be. If it bombs it wasn't.
Everyone knew it was a right's-keeping movie man, the question was 'could it at least be good?'
Your counter examples for racebending also miss the mark, The Love Guru was awful not because they had mike myers play a 'white guy raised in india that becomes a guru', but because they had Mike Myers play 'A Racist ******** making insulting stereotypes and comments about hindi culture and constantly mocking said culture". Avatar the Last Airbender was a failure because they didnt just whitewash the cast but because they Whitewashed the cast with actors that couldnt/wouldnt act for ***** the script was a disaster and it was a Shamalayandingdong film (whitewashing was poorly received but had it been done well people would have ended up liking it or at least forgiving it).
And Hispanic spiderman is totally a legit spiderman, hell look at Spiderverse there was a Hindu spiderman and no one lost their ***** over it, in fact that version was perhaps the most amazing (snicker) iteration i have seen in a while and would have loved to see him remain, perhaps move him to the mystical part of Marvel (hello Dr. Strange and Iron Fist).
White Black Panther already happened, its called The Phantom

you also missed my point, racebending is received poorly initially, if the movie is good then audiences are perfectly capable of getting over it, case in point? Iron Man 3, Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin, originally people lost their ***** over it but then the movie turned the entire mandarin into a huge as plot twist and the audiences then went 'omg that was SO CLEVER!'

Was that their reaction?
Are we talking about Iron Man 3? or the movies Zulzanet pointed out?
If we are talking IM 3 then yeah a lot of the fan base felt that way if not more, of course there were people who disliked the whole twist and threw a fit (to say it politely). Ill concede that my original post did not make it clear that i was not talking in absolutes with relation to IM 3, at the same time the point is still valid even when you give allowances.

The audience reaction is mixed to say the least... But race bending really wasn't the problem I'll agree with that. But, notice how Mandarin was 100% different character. So it was not race banding, it was more like character bending.
Personally I think race bending limit is how much the audience cares for a particular character looks. Personally I wouldn't watch a white Blade or a blonde Super man movie (even thinking about these makes me laugh and cringe at the same time).
It's not a matter of having anything against any kind of people. It's just that character from other sources have expectations that MUST be met !

I think the worst examples were with Jackie Chan and 007. Jackie Chan is actually a person and not a character. 007 changes all the time. Oh yeah and don't forget Shawshank Redemption. "Red" was changed from Irish to Black because people like hearing Morgan Freeman talk.
