Closing statements coming. Defense rested without having Dharun testify. Honestly he seems like kind of a prick (not necessarily hateful or evil, but you get a pretty good idea of his character from his actions and & smell of his personality from the "Non-apology" he texted to Clementi after Clementi posted he was gonna jump from a bridge-- the text mostly seemed to be making excuses, labeling it a misunderstanding and telling Clementi that Ravi has "no problem with gays". I don't know how anybody could call that a sincere apology)
I really loathe this guy, even outside of the actions he took, he seems to be a complete prick.
That said, I don't think he's got any LEGAL responsibility for the suicide and death. The HATE or BIAS stuff is shakey... 10 years is a lot.
He is guilty of witness tampering, etc. he's GUILTY and I'd give him some definite prison time AND deport him because of the felony convictions.
I was shocked he didn't take the 600 hours community service and NO jail time he was offered by the prosecution originally. He actually rejected it on "principle" because he feels that he did nothing wrong. And THAT is yet another reason why I consider him a real prick.
Sentence him with the max they can, tell him if he is ever found in the United States again he will have to serve the sentence, and deport him. Why pay for his jail time if we dont have to.
Why would he be deported? Is his immigration status in question elsewhere?
I'll echo this. Nothing in the article, nor anything anywhere else online, suggests that he isn't a US citizen; indeed, Wikipedia states that he went to an American high school, and lived in New Jersey.
Ah, thanks dcartist. My bad.

Here you go. Indian born. Non-citizen. Green card. They offered him a Plea deal for 600 hours community service, probation, with NO jail time, AND a promise to help him if immigration services tried to deport him. He said "**** you" because he believes he did nothing wrong, just like his "Non-apology" indicated.
It's also right there in the Tyler Clementi suicide wiki. Under prosecution section.
If you have a green card and you commit a felony, yes, they're gonna be interested in deporting you.
NOT GUILTY: Bias intimidation charges (the most serious offenses)
GUILTY: invasion of privacy (multiple counts), witness tampering, etc.
About what I expected. I have no sympathy for this guy. Definitely deserves at least SOME jailtime. Dude isn't even sorry. His "apology" to his roommate on the day of suicide didn't even say he was sorry. It was just one of those infuriating "just don't want you to leave with any misunderstanding o what a good guy I really am." kind of missives, denying wrongdoing.
Glad he spent a year on the frying pan. He's not ultimately the guy responsible for Clementi's death, but such a loathsome human being who contributed deliberate to his rommate's already Tortured experience.
I hope he's deported for the witness tampering business.
Edit: sorry, don't know why article from earlier got it wrong:
Guilty of all charges! Shocking to me. I think he's a weasel but I never thought the most serious charges would stick. Holy smokes. I don't think he should get an outrageous amount of prison time but definitely deport. His lawyers will appeal.
