Welcome to the Poetry Running Contest, the contest constantly open to anyone who loves poetry. If you wanna participate, you're in the right place!
This thread is only for poems submission. For questions about the rules, PM the PRC host, currently sentimentGX4.
Submissions
Anyone can participate. There is no sign-up.
To participate, just post a poem. Any type of poetry is welcome, of any length.
You can only post one poem per round.
All the submissions beyond the first will be ignored.
Rounds
A new round starts each Monday and ends on Sunday 12:01 AM.
That means the last day to vote is Saturday!
If a round has three or less entries, the round is extended until the next week.
The maximum number of poems per round is 12. Any poems submitted after the 12th will be saved for the next round.
Polls
On each Monday, the host will create a poll in the Personal Writing Forum with the submissions of that round. The poll is public and ends after 6 days, on Sunday.
Voting
Users who are participating for the current round in circulation MUST vote.
If you did NOT vote during the round your entry was submitted:
One vote will be deducted from your entry for the current round.
All future entries will automatically be disqualified until you vote on a future round.
NOTE: I will send "Remember to Vote" PMs to participants who have not voted late into the round. If I do not send a "Remember to Vote" PM within 24 hours before the round closing and the participant has not voted, the participant will not be put on "PRC Probation"; but, a vote will still be deducted from his current entry.
If you vote for three or more entries your votes will be null.
If you vote for yourself your poem will be disqualified.
Also, please keep into consideration the Honor System when voting:
Quote from "The Honor System" »
While it is understood there is no absolute means to monitor the intent of a vote, we ask each PRC participant to exercise integrity when voting out of respect for the contest:
- Please give each poetry submission an equal opportunity in attaining your vote.
- Please read, or at least skim, all the entries before voting.
- Please do not vote for your friends just because they're your friends.
The Poetry Running Contest puts good faith in its participants to act in an honorable manner.
Winning
After the poll ends, the submission with most votes wins.
In case of a tie for most votes, all the tied submissions win.
After every three wins, the host will contact the Personal Writing Moderator(s), Nai or Sam111111, who will award a trophy to the winner.
Hosts
The host is responsible for
Opening and closing the rounds.
Posting the polls.
Updating the list of Winners and Winning Poems.
Contacting the Personal Writing Moderator(s), Nai or Sam111111, for trophies.
Updating and revising the rules.
The host can vote for the entries and participate in the contest.
If a host is no longer active, it should be replaced by a new user, after talking to the old one and posting about it in the Submission Thread.
Each new host is responsible for creating a new Submission Thread.
Hyper Vyper (as of Round 78 and Round 85) Author Unknown (as of Round 85)
dondee (as of Round 112)
msun641 (as of Round 118)
oro_oro_oro (as of Round 107)
Spiral Brain (as of Round 122)
The Yotian Warrior (as of Round 114)
While preparing a new updated first post for a moderator to edit into the old thread, I discovered the long lost PRC rule that every new PRC host should create a new submissions thread.
Neither of the previous two hosts had made new threads when George retired so the thread grew really long and old. It was started almost a year and a half ago and had amassed over 300 posts. But now we have a clean new thread.
Admittedly, it feels kind of strange for the submissions thread to be this empty so it's up to you guys to help fill it back up!
Welcome to the Poetry Running Contest.
Submissions for PRC Round 98 are currently being accepted.
He hung himself at dawn's request
Yet knew no knots of consequence,
So though he dangled perilous
For moments measured not by sense,
But by the beats within his chest,
He earned not greater than a rash.
You should update the amount of wins in post #1, I'm curious how it has changed with the newcomers and the disappearance of PRC vets. I think it's less than 10 behind.
I Have Seen
I have seen the depraved and hungered
The destitute searching for meaning
The humans whom you and I have swept under
A rug of riches we’re gleaning.
I have seen the rich men saluting
The flag they would never protect
And defend the laws they’re instituting
To keep you and I akin to an insect
I have seen the dying fighting
To keep themselves alive
While the politician avoids sighting
What’s truly happening inside.
I have seen my own world crashing
Falling to pieces at my feet
And I have seen the rich men cashing
Checks made by murdering the weak.
Beneath the pearl of precious Nemi,
There I splash betwixt the shores.
Aricia, my perfect city,
Tucked within my watchful grove.
Bathing in the lake, I wonder,
Will they find me?
Are they trying?
The ghost of Midas stands beside me,
Shedding tears in golden droves.
Above the haunted shipwreck cairns,
I let the water hold me close.
Asclepius, why did you spare me?
Serpent Holder, let him go!
Lay me in his casket,
One more cobra to the basket,
Set in stars across the axis
Of the tilted Ophiuchus.
Raindrops, all blanketing bare, fatty fleshlings
That move through a scenery composed of memory,
Douse the intentions of evil necessities
Lusting for freedom from some tragic malady.
Betrayed by promises pronounced directly,
Decisively spoken to whatever eyes may see
With swollen lids, all the children recoiled,
Hid out in cemeteries, claiming old names for free.
Wasted illusions we planned to inject in
The hearts of one-million enemies, causticly,
Burnt through the only redeeming invention
We made of ourselves, built of valor and quality.
Say we've not lost all the faceless intrusions
That slipped through the hollows of my naked cavity!
Thoughts that did bubble, boiled out beyond us:
Please, beg their return! Form the life they kept mystery!
And when the final departure of brain meat
Produces that bastion of unrivaled brilliancy,
Pike what is left as a horrific monument,
Mouth opened wide, letting all see inside of me.
We are all milk carton missing
welcome to the great soup kitchen
wrapped in coats of the cheapest stitchin'
a shelter till your toes stop twitchin'
like ants see gods in the mirror
our godless plans become much clearer
hungry wolves fool the sheep nearer
when dying alone is all that it fears
even a whisper can sway the ghost
so zionists sing and scream the most
such rats for the piper coast to coast
as if they had forever to boast
of prizes before the contest begins
of saviors before we learn how to sin
tossed in the waters expected to swim
in a universe of oblivious spin
there are no strings attached to this
just dumb luck the meteors miss
subtle signs we learn to dismiss
easy to ignore in moments of bliss
even easier in places where misery is
this is not a song of hopelessness
it is an Anthem for the Pessimist
so if you love someone give them a kiss
it might just be the last kiss to exist
Anthem for the Pessimist

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Thanks to Xenphire @ Inkfox for the amazing new sig
“Thus strangely are our souls constructed, and by slight ligaments
are we bound to prosperity and ruin.”
― Mary Shelley, Frankenstein
‘Daphnis! Are you resting? Does your soul remember me at all? Could I catch a nymph so freely As I found you, friend, that day. How I do remember Music that we made, so fondly. Even in your death I find that Midas is no match Oh how I adore you even more so Than my proud kingfisher catch.’
Do not kiss Vesuvius' mouth
- It may erupt
And suddenly transform Pompeii in a pile of ash
Under pumice stone a fresco was dug up
its sole purpose was showing Icarus' Dive
Son of Daedalus the Renowned, he flew too high -
and charred all lands below
at the cost of his life.
and then we see a poor man shedding blood - shivers
brown-bearded and long forgotten blue eyes
In anguish exuding scarlet tone rivers
In the groves of olives he wept his days
Until his traitor's kiss had led him to death
- a mournful taste of myrrh.
far away from Heaven the stairways of Macchu Picchu are
All because of Cuzco's Chain, who tied them to the earth
touching this cursed gold no man would dare
according to the gentle Inca myth
If you believe these traditions and ancient lore
Would you care to mourn for Orphée's eternal love?
Poisoned by a viper, descended to the deepest vault
Why was she turned into a statue of salt?
His flawless voice echoed forever
In the black chambers where hope is lost.
Like similes poorly painted,
or a washed Grecian urn -
smudged by the same thing that brought it clarity,
or in sickness and in health,
until death or unreasonableness makes us part,
we wait.
Antony and Cleopatra felt it once,
and it brought into their minds
the ebb and flow of human misery:
to dwell on life lived free,
and sacrifice yourself to mere love
is folly.
Ah, Love!
Let us be false to one another: for the world,
which lies before us as a false pearl,
teaches those who live for specters above
that if you truly want to know your place,
it's only proper to earn a little disgrace.
my mouth is full of winsome lies -
and eyes are full of death besides
but luckily the soul is wise -
it sees beyond my blindness and
forced failure makes a better guise,
so as i come again alive,
it feels like life's a decent plan
Cold thoughts had taught me a lesson
Life could be better if it wasn't by selfishness
You blame religion, I despise science
Words executes scholars while others burn witches
To dare,
i was at first a burden.
ensnared,
but when i started
to care
about the people i knew
and the things i did
that's when they all left me
And it wasn't our choice to leave
to be bereaved
to feel there is nothing left
to feel
but the more you care,
the more you learn
that there isn't a choice.
does it matter?
What greed
lets the people ignore others
out on the streets dying
so many
inconcievable
we think last, these days,
because so many bleed
or die or fall
and we distract ourselves with dogs and cats
and gadgets and new houses
But maybe it's better
to be in bliss
and leave the caring
to the ignorant
my mouth is full of winsome lies -
and eyes are full of death besides
but luckily the soul is wise -
it sees beyond my blindness and
forced failure makes a better guise,
so as i come again alive,
it feels like life's a decent plan
To dare,
i was at first a burden.
ensnared,
but when i started
to care
about the people i knew
and the things i did
that's when they all left me
And it wasn't our choice to leave
to be bereaved
to feel there is nothing left
to feel
but the more you care,
the more you learn
that there isn't a choice.
does it matter?
What greed
lets the people ignore others
out on the streets dying
so many
inconcievable
we think last, these days,
because so many bleed
or die or fall
and we distract ourselves with dogs and cats
and gadgets and new houses
But maybe it's better
to be in bliss
and leave the caring
to the ignorant
To tell you the truth, I needed to quote that.
"Ignorant Bliss"

NOTE: The following poem is going to compete in PRC #102.
When you least expect it
When you least expect it
It comes
Bringing sorrow and joy
Yesterday I was not sure
How many hours have passed
Until the heartbeat's silent pause
A gloom moment after the chore
A gentle change - and nothing more
I went away, and looked back
Just to come back.
When you least expect it
It comes
A premise that no one can quench
Visions of the undiscovered truth
A promise for human glory
After the brief prelude
I witnessed all, but I am not qualified to prevail
In the very end I am just a sad boy
I am nothing but a cornered animal
Ruled by most of instincts, the primal
Never able to reach the next pit.

Precious seconds
Are ticking away
The pressure building
To my dismay
My heart is pounding
Louder than a drum
The pulse in my veins
Makes my body numb
The world revolves so slowly
A shrill ringing in my ears
The deafening noise
Personifying my fears
But in the distance, I make out the sun
5… 4… 3… 2… 1…
Raindrops, all blanketing bare, fatty fleshlings
That move through a scenery composed of memory,
Douse the intentions of evil necessities
Lusting for freedom from some tragic malady.
Betrayed by promises pronounced directly,
Decisively spoken to whatever eyes may see
With swollen lids, all the children recoiled,
Hid out in cemeteries, claiming old names for free.
Wasted illusions we planned to inject in
The hearts of one-million enemies, causticly,
Burnt through the only redeeming invention
We made of ourselves, built of valor and quality.
Say we've not lost all the faceless intrusions
That slipped through the hollows of my naked cavity!
Thoughts that did bubble, boiled out beyond us:
Please, beg their return! Form the life they kept mystery!
And when the final departure of brain meat
Produces that bastion of unrivaled brilliancy,
Pike what is left as a horrific monument,
Mouth opened wide, letting all see inside of me.
Her lull is strong;
Pulling harder than the tides in which she hides.
Dragged along;
Aching for the Siren's skin,
Let alone her song...
--
welcome to the great soup kitchen
wrapped in coats of the cheapest stitchin'
a shelter till your toes stop twitchin'
like ants see gods in the mirror
our godless plans become much clearer
hungry wolves fool the sheep nearer
when dying alone is all that it fears
even a whisper can sway the ghost
so zionists sing and scream the most
such rats for the piper coast to coast
as if they had forever to boast
of prizes before the contest begins
of saviors before we learn how to sin
tossed in the waters expected to swim
in a universe of oblivious spin
there are no strings attached to this
just dumb luck the meteors miss
subtle signs we learn to dismiss
easy to ignore in moments of bliss
even easier in places where misery is
this is not a song of hopelessness
it is an Anthem for the Pessimist
so if you love someone give them a kiss
it might just be the last kiss to exist
Anthem for the Pessimist

One day we spent
Enthralled, then went
Into the 'morrow's sigh.
The next was jest
Or joke at best;
Either pronounced "goodbye."
One week was claimed!
Our passion named,
The only course of sense
Was distant lust.
The timing must
Have laughed at our expense.
One month had seen
The conflict. Keen
To overthrow the qualm,
Relented hearts
Sought newer starts
And lingered in the calm.
Two months have gone:
How time keeps on
Without a single care
For what was had!
It leaves me sad
To see what perished there.
Two weeks has brought
The sordid thought
That all our games were played
Without the chance
To make advance
And find our fortune's paid.
Two days is all
It took to fall
Away from what we built:
One day, we poured
Our hearts' accord;
The next, the mixture spilt.
I am not extravagent
nothing special
content
I fear I will never break free
or want to.
‘Daphnis!
Are you resting?
Does your soul remember me at all?
Could I catch a nymph so freely
As I found you, friend, that day.
How I do remember
Music that we made, so fondly.
Even in your death
I find that Midas is no match
Oh how I adore you even more so
Than my proud kingfisher catch.’

Water is the blood of mother earth
it flows throughout her being,
cool, crisp and clear.
When the mother is calm,
the water is still
silent and serene
When the mother is fuming
the waters reply,
waves and crashing waters
leave the world all but dry.
The mother gave us all life
her water, like breastmilk
rivers, lakes, and streams
are the teats of Earth.
The mother is existence
without her,
there would be none.

Like similes poorly painted,
or a washed Grecian urn -
smudged by the same thing that brought it clarity,
or in sickness and in health,
until death or unreasonableness makes us part,
we wait.
Antony and Cleopatra felt it once,
and it brought into their minds
the ebb and flow of human misery:
to dwell on life lived free,
and sacrifice yourself to mere love
is folly.
Ah, Love!
Let us be false to one another: for the world,
which lies before us as a false pearl,
teaches those who live for specters above
that if you truly want to know your place,
it's only proper to earn a little disgrace.
and eyes are full of death besides
but luckily the soul is wise -
it sees beyond my blindness and
forced failure makes a better guise,
so as i come again alive,
it feels like life's a decent plan
The gaping hole within my heart
Has been tearing, prying for some time
The shameful secret I could not impart
Is growing, amassing, becoming sublime
The smiles are no longer genuine
And my laughter it claimed as its own
Facial expressions so painful to make
I would rather swallow sharp stones
These emotions live in a dreary place
That I have become accustom
Life is too fleeting to efface
All these deep regrets.
Are we living in a dream?
Cold thoughts had taught me a lesson
Life could be better if it wasn't by selfishness
You blame religion, I despise science
Words executes scholars while others burn witches
I can not stress it enough.

Do me this last favor
Before the night singes your face
Into the ashy black it commands:
Talk to me of broken desires,
Decomposed dramas of the life
We let creep through our hands.
That's all I'm asking:
One simple reprieve from this
Tumultuous procession;
An eve of revelation;
The sharing of imagery;
A single confession!
I need that epiphany
Of heavy spoken words
To hold as evidence
That the toils of this walk
Have taken me somewhere
Beyond impertinence.
To dare,
i was at first a burden.
ensnared,
but when i started
to care
about the people i knew
and the things i did
that's when they all left me
And it wasn't our choice to leave
to be bereaved
to feel there is nothing left
to feel
but the more you care,
the more you learn
that there isn't a choice.
does it matter?
What greed
lets the people ignore others
out on the streets dying
so many
inconcievable
we think last, these days,
because so many bleed
or die or fall
and we distract ourselves with dogs and cats
and gadgets and new houses
But maybe it's better
to be in bliss
and leave the caring
to the ignorant
and eyes are full of death besides
but luckily the soul is wise -
it sees beyond my blindness and
forced failure makes a better guise,
so as i come again alive,
it feels like life's a decent plan
To tell you the truth, I needed to quote that.

When you least expect it
When you least expect it
It comes
Bringing sorrow and joy
Yesterday I was not sure
How many hours have passed
Until the heartbeat's silent pause
A gloom moment after the chore
A gentle change - and nothing more
I went away, and looked back
Just to come back.
When you least expect it
It comes
A premise that no one can quench
Visions of the undiscovered truth
A promise for human glory
After the brief prelude
I witnessed all, but I am not qualified to prevail
In the very end I am just a sad boy
I am nothing but a cornered animal
Ruled by most of instincts, the primal
Never able to reach the next pit.
