And in the end, it was Dumb Luck that won with this card:
Spellshyft2UUU
Creature - Shapeshifter {R}
Flash
When Spellshyft comes into play, counter target spell. Spellshyft becomes the color or colors of that spell.
Spellshyft has lifelink as long as it’s white, trample as long as it’s green, first strike as long as it’s red, deathtouch as long as it’s black, and flying as long as it’s blue.
4/2
Congratulations, DL.

This is the five minutes of Internet access I get this week, so let me use it to congratulate Dumb Luck. I definitely liked the reference to Spellshift and Shyft, and the mechanic reflects those two cards in a strange way.
By the way, I'm so glad to have come in second to this. Early judges said my card was broken, and some finished judges had that sentiment, but in the end some were with me. Ultimately though my card has shock value, and not in a good way. Spellshyft on the other hand has everything an FCC winner should: It's well balanced without being boring, it's stategically complex, and while it nods to the past it's unlike anything that has come before. It is first and foremost a counterspell body like Mystic Snake or Draining Whelk, a middle child with neither the efficiency of the former or potential size of the latter, but the color of what it countered can really give it an edge on those two and if you're adventerous you can use Scuttlemutt to surprising effect. Unlike the other counterbodies I mentioned, there is also a serious consideration to not counter with it, because well a 4/2 flying body could very do worse to the mono black player than countering a spell and getting a 4/2 body with no evasion or worse, countering a non-Esper artifact and having no abilities. In every game it plays out so differently that most people would probably not care for it, but that only makes it all the more rewarding for the rest of us to master it. I so wish this were real, and it's been many a month since I've said that about an FCC winner.
Congratualtions again DL! You have much to teach us, and I am anxious to learn.
I'm a little bit sore on this one, because one of my first ideas involved Spellshyft's third ability (with a few differences), and I scrapped it because I thought it wasn't creative enough. I also don't like that it's a 4/2 blue creature, but as a throwback to the only other 4/2 monoblue creature ever printed I guess it's acceptable.
All that said, I want to echo Kenaron's sentiment on the strategic complexity of this card. The number of options it opens up in game play is astounding. I would love to crack this in sealed, or throw it into just about any U/x EDH deck. Really, 10/10 for balance.
Thanks, all, for the encouragement and support since I've joined up. I'm less encouraged by winning the round than I am by the support y'all have for the card I posted.
Y'all rock! I can give nothing but props to the rest of you: Players for pushing each other to be the best designers we can be, Judges for taking the responsibility on yourself to run, evaluate, and tolerate us players, and the round moderators for the effort in organizing and presenting this contest.
All of that being said, I wish I could have gone with my first design choice for the Spellshyft art:
i like the card very much ..i only have one question.
Doesn't the counter ability means that it can only be played if the stack has something or else it will counter itself? ...meaning that you can't play it as a 4/2 blue creature with flash and flying?
It counters a spell when it comes into play. When it's in play, it's too late to counter itself. Demigod of Revenge has an ability that triggers when the card is played, instead of when it's in play.
I love its hilarious art, its brilliant name with references to these old cards, its perfectly balaced power level and that amazingly innovative set of abilities... I guess I love just about every aspect of Spellshyft! As a "color matters" card, it fits perfectly into sets like Shadwmoore and Alara. Just think about some counter targets: Figure of Destiny or Ajani Vengeant makes it a 4/2 with first strike and lifelink. Ashenmoor Gouger or Demigod of Revenge --> Voracious Cobra ability Firespout or Boggart Ram-Gang" target="blank">Boggart Ram-Gang --> 4/2 first strike, trample Rafiq of the Many" target="blank">Rafiq of the Many or Rhox War Monk --> 4/2 flying, trample, lifelink Woolly Thoctar" target="blank">Woolly Thoctar --> 4/2 first strike, trample, lifelink
You get the idea. Being 4/2 is crucial. And this is such a nice homage to Shyft as Kenaron noted.
I'm definitly gonna print some proxies for my customized Shadowmoore and Alara cubes! Wish it was real? Make it so
PS: Or try it on Magic Work Station!
PPS: I'm sure, I missed a lot of cards, but this is my favorite FCC card so far I think, as I have printed very few and can't remember being this exited about one before.
Outstanding art and a great ability. I like what happens to it when it counters a spell. Getting various abilities depending on the color is one of the coolest MTG related things I've ever seen.
Wow...
this card is so good that I even think it's overcosted. It has the same CMC as Shyft and it's infinitely better (nice ode on the P/T)... congratulations, Dumb Luck! That was no dumb luck at all:D... this card is awesome!
Excellent job, Mr. Luck! Everyone has already mentioned the interesting interactions that could happen during a game so I'll mention another positive: The card doesn't feel like a laundry list of items thrown together. It feels very natural that this creature could come into play with anywhere from zero to five of the abilities. It's very smooth. So once again, excellent job!
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
Wow, that card's nice! It would go well with something like Scuttlemutt to make it all 5 colors at once, or just countering Progenitus or something like that.
Noticed that on my last submission. Cleared as much as I could, but still messed up, I see. I'll have to find another host, or just upload to MTGS from now on. I'll probably do the latter.
This is a truly great card. Great abilities, great balance, and even great flavor. Double thumbs up and if I had a third it would be giving a thumbs up as well. Bravo.
On a slightly different note, how do you make these cards, and where do you get the art? Finally, I know it is done through some program, and is that program compatible with Macbook Pro?
If possible I would like to participate in an FCC, since it looks so fun. Because of this, I would greatly appreciate a quick reply. Please PM me.

this card is so amazing! i feel that magic seems to rehash old abilities with a twist in new cards that is somewhat predictable...
but your card is something new that i have never ever seen in mtg, only wished it was a real card! GREAT JOB MAN! i'd be damn glad if you landed a job at R&D!
Fixed the problem for ya. So much going on in our little corner of the web I sometimes
forget to look at our main page :embarrassed:
So, what was done was we took the png and shifted servers. Then, had to change
its file format because for the past (very) few days it ate up half the monthly bandwidth
for the server it's on. So, I´ll have to charge you 793,329.23 € But don´t worry, PayPal is fine.

Although the flavor of the old card was 4/2, it seems like 2/4 or 2/5 would be more fitting.
Other then that great card.
