So I've been making some cardboard cutout counters for our games of commander. Originally my PLUS counters where pretty plain and my MINUS counters had a bit of a blood splat on them to make them look 'nastier'.
Now a few of my friends agree that I should either go clean or special effects but not both... suggesting either a starburst of some sort on the PLUS or removing the splat from the MINUS.
What are your thoughts? Any other directions I could go as well?
Details: the MINUS are upside down behind the PLUS so you can see across the table if they are a buff or a debuff. Also yes... I did do +3/+3 and-3/-3... I know some people are really opposed to that as an abbreviation of multiple counters but it is very practical.
Nice. I like the look of the Green Splatted Counter. My issue is with the Grey back/red splat/black text. I cannot really see it all that well, mind you I am colorblind. It might be a good idea to move the color schemes to high contrast color combinations. The splatted ones, in my opinion, look better than the "plain text" ones. I'd also suggest maybe moving to a sans-serif font (like arial or calibri) for better readability. Keeping the 2 types (+ and -) different colors is a good idea so you have more of a visual cue.
Green and red are the common problem colors for colorblind. This is why green/red stop lights are spiked with blue/orange and are always oriented the same (red on top or left) with one exception.
I like the splatter but agree some adjustmets are in order to increase contrast.
Not sure if I agree with adding art to the plus side. No art is as much an indicator as full art in the right circumstance.
If you must a yellow sun or star might do. A heart even. That sunburst render you posted isn't quite what I had in mind.. too subtle.
Honestly I chat a lot in a game design chat room and color blindness comes up a lot so I really appreciate your opinion, I'll make some small adjustments.
As for the plus I need to experiment with a few things... my friend suggested a non subtle starburst, basically the type where you have lighter lines emanating from the center similar to the rays you see on some Japanese flags.
As for exotic tokens I'm looking into that... this is a series of reminders for 'commander' so I will include stuff caused by instants and sorceries like 'is a creature and a land' or 'is a black zombie'.
I think the splat things look really good. If you are really worried about colors, there are a few things you can do:
1. The background luminance (similar to how you used gray for one value and black for another, someone could effectively identify the token just based on the background)
2. The token shape (could even use this as a dimension for distinguishing +/-)
3. Some kind of three dimensional thing (you could have 0-3 corners bent up or something like that)
4. Material or texture difference (some could be wood, some could be fuzzy, some could be giant googly eyes)
I made some tokens out of metal rings with green for +1/+1, red for -1/-1, yellow for spores (because I have thallids in pauper commander), and 5 color for planeswalkers. Cannot get pictures until February.

Crazy value tokens would be awesome if Frankenstein's Monster was still a thing....
