Speaking about hosting, what is everyone using/preferring? I looked into dropbox but REALLY didn't like that service. Is photobucket good? Lots of people seem to be using that but I worry I'm gonna run out of space.
*This is borderline spam, but I'm looking to post renders and actually read the OP.
Love you guys, thanks a ton
I tried a lot of things before I settled on drop box. My resoning was simple, I wanted a program that was easily accessible from anywhere, that make it extremely easy to share images and information with people.
The Gallery function of Dropbox was the best I found. That being said, I needed some help to get more space so that I could accomidate the large number of images.
Its been with horror and Joy to find the old thread closed and this new one. If anything Its a nice clean up from over9000 posts etc.
People should just stick with the unglued transparency method, because technically speaking, they haven't counterfeited a card. Rather placed a piece of plastic on top of a blank.
Anyone notice how Gilmore's links are 404ing?
From the first post: "NO discussion of printing or proxying techniques. This thread is concerned only with the manipulation of digital imagery. The staff of MTGS does not condone counterfeiting & will not have the community put at risk over this." Please refrain from talking about any printing techniques.

I haven't tried the links, but the loss of the galleries that had been built up via the previous thread...that would be a real bummer.
I think my favorites were some of the lands.
While I prefer the super-art look, often with spill, some of the lands based on the unhinged card frames are just outstanding.

I have 15 EDH decks...sorta kills the 'I only need one of a card' aspect of the format.
I went and started a Commander/EDH blog! Come see it at http://wordofcommander.blogspot.com/ and it includes all 15 of my custom super-art generals!
If you're more into the finance section of the game, I write on Fridays for MTGPrice.com.
TheEvilCliff: What you want to do is put everything other than your artwork into a single folder and apply a layer mask to the folder. Then pain in black on the mask whatever parts of the artwork you want to bleed through. You can also duplicate your art, drag it to the top layer, apply a layer mask to it, make it completely black, and then make white the parts you want to bleed over your template. When I'm painting my layer mask I use a brush around 75% hardness.
Shadow layer requires a blank layer as the top layer of your template. Use a 30% opacity on your brush, 0% hardness, and paint black where you want your shadow.
I've done this, and it seems like it goes slow. If I want to remove something black, like text, it takes a lot of passes right?
I'm figuring this out I think.
The layer mask allows me to brush away the top layer, basically. If I do too much, the eraser tool is there.
And holy wow is it hard for a non-artist to get shadows right!
I'm not exactly sure the problems you're having with the shadows. It's actually quite easy once you get the hang of the process and judging the direction of the light in the image. There could be quite a few things going on to make it difficult for you.
That's a very hard question to answer right now. If I do, it will be further nerfed to about 100-150dpi. Since I've stopped sharing them, I've noticed a distinct reduction in the amount of eBay auctions I've needed to report.
This user is selling obvious proxies and claiming them to be real. Please take some time and report these to both eBay and WOTC. Yes, he's using the original card, but he has no rights on the art he's printing back onto the card.
Zeerbe - do you mean it's obvious that he's selling proxies because he has printed tradmarked wizards logos back onto the card. Or he is using the original bars for the card (name, mana symbol, etc) but he doesn't own the anime images?
This may be off topic, but this thread encourages reporting people, mainly on ebay it seems. What is the difference between altering a card and using another's artwork and making one's own artwork as it pertains to counterfeit cards. Isn't this an issue for the original artist to pursue or is this an issue for wizards to step in? In other words, zerbee, what is the difference between the persons you are reporting and alteredprints.com ? As far as the source of images is concerned. (Assuming that is the only violation, not withstanding printing wizards logos on blank cards, which is obvious monkey is doing)
I'm just trying to get a clear picture before I report anyone for counterfeit material.

Thank you.
Well there are a number of things that he is doing that he should not be doing.
1) Using rules text, frames (any), symbols (mana, tap, set etc)...these all trademarked by WOTC.
2) Using any existing MTG artwork would fall under copyright infringement as they are all owned by WOTC
3) Using the anime artwork..would be fine if it was indeed HIS artwork or he owned the copyright to the work...but if he used anything above it would no longer be fine.
As for using the MTG back...I’m not 100% sure on any sort of legality issue with that. It could be construed that by doing so he would be trying to pass the card off as a legit WOTC printed card, but that seems kind of a stretch..not a lawyer and not real sure on this part.
So how is this different than what alteredprints.com does?
Well they take a card...say forest. Next they take an image which they own or have the rights to use and print the image onto a foil face. This foil face is then "glued" onto the face of the forest.
So they are effectively only changing the art of the card with art that they own and selling the card as the exact card it was before.
I am not trying to defend that seller, but just to clarify this community's view. It is ok to alter a card if you leave frames, symbols, other WOTC trademarks on the card and the artwork put on the card is one's own.
I would like to point out something about altered prints (because they are popular right now) is that people get upset over the anime crowd but a little research shows maybe altered prints isn't much better. I typed in "forest fantasy", "mountain fantasy" into google images and found pieces of art (a castle for example) added to AP's altered mountain. After a brief glance it looks as though they have "pieced" together other artists work to make their own. I don't know if that is fair use, a collage, or what.
I do not have the link because they took down their listings. Just food for thought. Any other questions I had I directed to people via email.
If you take a card and alter it with your own art, and sell it as the same card it started out as, you're fine.
If you take a card and sell it as any other card, or add any art to it you don't have the legal right to sell, you're not doing it legally. So any basic land that gets turned into a proxy card isn't legal to sell. Any card that gets art added to it that you don't have the rights to sell isn't legal to sell. If you add any copyrighted images (including frames, mana symbols, etc) it isn't legal to sell.
Others have pointed it out as well, but you asked me, so here's my take.
The user I posted is selling, say, this altered Drogskol Captain.
Now, the card is an actual Drogskol Captain. From this users item description you find the following;
All cards sold by me are alters of 100% authentic, tournament legal Magic the Gathering cards.
I DO NOT SELL PROXIES OR FAKES, EVER.
This is misleading at best. What this user is not allowed to do, ever, is use the original WOTC owned art.
Why? Because the user does not own the art. Does not have permission from Hasbro or WOTC to use the art. And by specifically telling you that is is not a proxy or a fake, they are wrongly telling you that they have the right to then sell them, which they obviously don't. The foil land's that user has for sale are 100% PROXIES. See that star expansion symbol? Does it exist on any full framed WOTC produced card? No it does not, which means that those cards are wiped foils, and then produced from there.
Alteredprints is a tad different. They actually have permission from some artists to use the art for their alters. Why on Earth anyone would spend that kind of money for what amounts to a foil sticker on a non-foil card is beyond me.
Would I just be able to get some information on the entirety of the old thread gallery? (Happy Gilmore's Gallery). Has it been deleted or has something else happened?
I could not help but notice that a few of your alters used the same image as HG's, most notably Apocalypse and Kalastria Highborn.
I was wondering if the two of you used the same website to find the images you use?
The reason I ask is because many of those images are quite stellar, and i wouldn't mind dipping my pen in that company's ink.

It was a pretty quick search so I don't know if dimensions are good enough. Let me know.
I'd like those framed like the Unhinged Island, with a different name (Snow-Covered Island).
edit: tried attaching them, the files were too big (even though they're small... :-/) so i just re-uploaded them. Here:
