I had ca_chandler do some commission work for me, and I thought I would post some of the cards. Had some trouble attaching the pics, so what you get is what you get.
I bought my first set at a hobby store. It was a kit used to paint minis. I also found acrylic paints at the Wally-Mart. The paints and brushes were much cheaper at WM, but any craft or fabric store will carry the paints.
By the way, here are three alts I did for the holiday exchange, enjoy.
OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!/ are those real black lotus/dual.....if so....WHY?~?~?!?!?!?!?!?!111ONEONEOENEONE
seriously. omfg! i don't think i could ever trust someone, or myself w/ an original dual/ black lotus
(sorry for bad spelling/grammar but i'm too shocked atm....)
LOL yeah it's not a real lotus. I thought the same at first too then I noticed the large gap between Black Lotus. Also, whats the big deal with the dual? His paint set probably cost way more then the dual.
I'm so impressed with the art that's been displayed on this thread.. especially the planeswalkers and dark rituals... *drool* I think I may head over to that auction site and purchase some altered cards...
hey tarmogoyf (i noticed you spelled the card correctly....congrats on that...)(it's a personal gripe of mine w/ goyf is spelled tarmAgoyf...anyways) I would probably buy these too...except i only plpay older formats like extended at ptq's and such i'm not sure if the HJ's would allow it so i am probably going to stay away from it.
Whalen, your sig is a little over the top, imho. <_< I think you should try and either tone it down a bit, or at least leave the original artists name. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the borderless alters are pretty little work on the alterers part, so it seems kind of goofy to put a huge sig onto it.
@Zato Ichi: I don't think there's a huge difference in quality on any of the acrylics on the market, in a broad sense of things. I recommend just buying a starter set of acrylics (the cheaper it is, it just usually means less colors, quantity, etc), taking a cheap cool common, and a very fine paintbrush, and just trying it for yourself. It takes some practice, as you need to not only practice erasing around the borders, not painting on the text, not being too sloppy, but taking your time really pays off here.
I bought my beginner's set at Wal Mart (granted, it's very basic colors, so I do a lot of mixing...), but I'm sure any art store will carry them.
I just threw these two up on that famous auction site:
Finished them this morning, about 2 1/2 hours altogether. I spent much longer on the foundry.

@cbg- are you a god or something? Every altered card ive seen you post here is absolutely flawless. I just want to thank you for making my eyes so happy. Keep up the amazing work!

@ CBG: Looks great. They both look top-notch, except you seemed to have some trouble with the top border on the name/cc box on them... I also hate when that happens, but it's just weird that every other line is perfect, it's just that spot (and really, this is more of a nitpick for your benefit in the future than anything). But truly, the lines are all sharp, and the coloring is spot on. Great work. I especially like the Magus. The art on that card really comes alive when it's not cluttered with borders, you know?
I really do have to get more done... I've been so busy, and I'm constantly too tired to work on anything.
Also, does anyone else feel weird doing an alter that has already been done? I've noticed that people have tried to do different cards every time, but it's getting harder and harder to avoid the really cool ones.

If you are talking about the Visions, that is the Mark Poole's autograph. I had them auto'd at a GP.
This is my third full-art card. I did this one with sharpies like my bogardan hellkite and thorn of amythest. I think that this one is my best by far. The only problem that I have yet to work out is the sharpies messing up the text box borders. For my next card I will try to cover these areas up with masking tape to prevent the borders from getting scarred. All in all, I am very happy with this this 3rd card. I think that I am approaching the quality that can be achieved with acrylics. My goal is to match the general quality of painted cards using only sharpies. That way, all of my alterations will be the same thickness as normal cards and 100% tournament legal. Let me know what you think.
Wow - the amazing art just keeps coming...love your stuff CBG Will be chasing that Sacred Foundry pretty damn hard! Thanks for posting it.

You're not your deck.
You're not how much mana you have in your pool.
You're not your half-naked, animè girl card sleeves.
You're not your DCI rating.
You're not your freaking ‘Coldsnap Prerelease’ t-shirt.
You are the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the Multiverse.

That Ohran Viper is amazing! Would you be willing to sell or possibly take requests?
I didn't even see that orhan viper (must've somehow skipped over it)
Very well done. Only one minor gripe: the shadow from the stalactite shouldn't be on the card text box like that because the light is coming from OUTSIDE the cave; not inside it.
I used an eraser instead of brake fluid like I did w/ thorn of amethyst. So....it didnt get ruined by color bleeding/bleaching. I think this is an improvement on my 1st attempt. (Done w/ sharpies.)
If you are talking about the Visions, that is the Mark Poole's autograph. I had them auto'd at a GP.
LOL, Alright, that makes sense. God Mark, why do you have to sign it so big, you'd think you drew the picture or something. -_-
I agree, the Ohran looks really good. I am trying to work up the courage to do some money rares soon (I'm thinking my Chrome Mox might get altered), but I just can't quite yet. I'll do a few more $1-$4 cards before I take the plunge...

I dont really want to sell my cards. It takes WAY too long w/ sharpies to make it worth my time. The cards that I am modifying are going to go in my Cube and occasionally get taken out for PTQ's or FNM. I am trying to get my gf to modify cards w/ acrylics and sell them. She is actually an artist, im just kinda exploring this as a hobby-time activity.
A- Some pictures of the playmat my gf MADE for me. She cut and sewed the fabric and drew the braid, Giant solifuge and red zone for me. pretty awesome IMO. It has to be VERY high in the running for best playmat in existence. She is pretty talented.
B- The hibernation sliver that my gf drew on my friend chris' playmat.
C- the next card that I am working on. Its a Tempest Counterspell. The brickwork should be easy, but some of the color matching is tough. I will post the finished product soon.
Also...that pic of the morphling card. I think that was made like 6 or 7 years ago. I am pretty sure that some guy shaved the card just right, so that when he pasted the pic into the art box, the card would have the same thickness as it originally had and thus be tournament playable. Anyway, that was a card I heard about several years back, and this one certainly fits the description.
p.s. I know that playmat alterations aren't what this thread is about but I wont make it a habit.
one pic is of the braids side, the other is of the solifuge side. They both show some of the awesomeness going on in the red zone; Paisleys, lotuses and orbs for each of the mana colors in the center.
This one was soooo hard to do. I thought that It would be easy, but it was actually extremely tedious. Matching the bricks was a pain. I need a better solution than masking tape for covering text boxes. Suggestions?
