thanx doc, yaug .. i presented several volcanic island studies to my client, he would just somehow want to continue with the pandora project coz of the big success of AVATAR, regardless whether these volcanic islands are better representation of pandora.. the pic seems a lot bluer, my skies appear to be pinkish in actual, need to check the scanner...thanks guys!
This is just mindblowing! (great research MO! thanks!), had goosebumps while looking at the actual pic of that mountain, never really thought these wonders existed. WHOAH!
Heres my latest. I finally got around to doing this guy up. The paint is a little thick in spots but overall I am pretty happy with it.
Anyone have any great tips on drawing people?
or good tips on how to thin out the paint once you have painted over the same spot multiple times?
If the paint gets too thick I often just scrape the area off with a toothpick and start over - it's frustrating but sometimes it needs to be done.
Painting anatomy just comes with practice. There's no quick fix to learning it. Also - you should start taking your pics from straight over top of the card. That really sharp angle doesn't lend well to critiquing.

This was the best shot I could get. Straight on the flash creates too much glare, and if i turn the flash off it comes out dark and blurry. This is my best shot until I get my scanner working again or a better camera.
Ill have to try just scraping it off again. I tried that once scraping it off with my finger and ended up ruining the card. Ill try with something more precise like the toothpick. Thanks
Here is a before and after of an Illusions of Grandeur that i did for a friend. It looks like it had gotten stepped on on the floor of a car with gravel and stuff or got stepped on in an outdoor location. It had 2 holes in it. One you can't really notice but the other on the right hand side of the text box is right through the card. I fixed up the back of the card as well thats why I scanned both sides with a before and after. I think the front turned out very good. The back didn't get very much love but it does look better and it'll be in a sleeve anyways.
I use both and refuse to give concrete answers to anything ;).
Really though, I use Pthalo Blue and Carbon black liquid acrylics and the rest are heavy body. Since I water everything down so much it it usually doesn't matter than much.
Then why the fluids? Because if I want to do dark lining, I don't want the intensity of the dark line to be lost by watering down a black heavy body paint. It's also nice to be able to make darker dirty colors by adding these two pigments to lighter earth pigments. Finally, when the black dries out I can add a little bit of water to (within a couple days) it and I can remix it with other colors. The consistency of the reconstituted paint is a bit weird, but it works.
And, I do mix fluids with heavy bodied paints. I love the flexibility it gives me when I am working.

I love Everflowing Chalice. It turned out to be better than I expected.
Karthuus looks a tad odd, but the others are fantastic.

I know its not much "Volcanic" anymore but I Reeeaaally like the AVATAR theme. It is a great movie (instant classic) and I want to capture that theme.
I am pretty happy with this. it has pure awesomeness factor in it

If by great you mean brainless, derivative, and terrible.
The v-islands look great as in great though.
I also like the draw-Sphinx above with the semi-stylized mountain face.

I originally started by using the heavy body stuff out of the tube, but I keep reading that the fluid stuff is what I should be using.
I have a wide color variety of heavy body paint, but I am thinking about trying out some primary colors of fluid. Is mixing the two okay?

Those are really cool. I love alters that play off of other Magic cards they work with. Well done.
