Kburts: Yup, hand painted, first and best use of the herbal poultices I dug out of my Lorwyn common box!
Cruz: Yup they're proxies for my T1 deck, now I just have to figure out what to do for the Workshops [edit: Duh moment].
Piechu: I had toyed with the idea of doing them on foils but they're for my T1 deck and I tend to have either all foils or no foils in a deck I play in tournaments.

I've got the same idea. I've got a few Spellbooks and herbals. I hope to get 2 sets done (one for the binder/trade and one for me) I just got the pictures off right now. I still need a lot of work on mine. I hope to use the large mana symbol off of a newer land for the text box and just paint the moxen in the normal spot. I haven't figured out how I'm going to do that though.
Btw, yours do look great. I think this is one of my favorite threads (if not THE) here on the site. The work all of you do is just amazing to come look at. Makes me wish I had a lot of more time to work on them and better paints! I've just got a simple set which is hard to mix colors

I did a commission for Morphling lately (card 1 of 3) and a chinese one for my EDH deck:
This is, of course, quite awesome. I'm thinking a few little pieces (facets) of mirror/glass laying on the bottom margin of the textbox might be a nice touch. If you think it'll work. Like 2 or 3 pieces..not many at all.
Looking forward to seeing #2. Much more challenging than this one. But this one turned out just great.
I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place and I'm brand new here so please be kind. My brother is absolutly in love with Magic cards and he came over the other day and showed me these altars that he got. I went to college as a painting major and he so badly wants me to try and make an altar that he gave me a deck of cards, bought me some acrylic paints and some tiny brushes. My brother never buys me anything...ever. So I want to take on this challenge but I'm looking for any kind of tips as to painting on these cards. It looks insanely hard so any help would be much appreciated! My brother believes that if anyone can do this it's me.....so please help!

Well, you are a painting major, you should have SOME knowledge as to paints, their effects and what you can do with them. It's basically painting on a tiny canvas, and doing your best/using your imagination as to what you want it to look like. I wish MY brother would ask me to alter his cards
Anywho, I'm in no way, shape or form a GREAT painter, but I guess a good start is simple extensions - basically taking a small part of a card (like the glowing "smoke" from Shatter") and extending it (little bit on the outside of the card, make the effect look complete). Then from there, move on to full alters, and see what happens.
Wish you the best of luck, hope everything turns out well. Post results if you can
Thank you so much! I was thinking of starting with the Lightening Bolt card. There are plenty of examples of alters of it on the internet. What baffles me is how people can paint past the border and you can barely see any brush strokes. Plus how people can match the colors so precisely. Yes I did go to college for painting but i never had a canvas this tiny. I'll give it a try, if I get any good results I will post them on here.
Thanks Again!
Yeah that Jace is so smooth I can't believe it. Great work!
My favorite alterations vary widely, but when someone executes a FLAWLESS extended art it just looks so nice.

I wish I had the cards to do that with. I'm stuck with basics.

Very nice work, looks like a real full-art card. Planning on using it so I can do less work when making banners in PS
