Here's my submission, with some step-by-step ... I mainly conceptualized with the hand drawing, because I rewlized that A:My scanner sucks, and B:must of it was geometric shapes, so it was done mostly in Paint. It's not ... so bad ... is it? Thank god for not having to draw creatures, that's all I have to say.

Is it required to draw a new pic? Im very bad at drawing, but I just want to join the contest, so I recolored/editet the pic. I hope it's okay.
I don't think it's a very good idea, however I'm all for actual rerendering of art. Just because if no one else does something everyone likes, we would still have an original'ist point of view; in a way.
Damn, that took a while, and I haven't even colored it in yet. I really like this piece, and I'm looking forward to sprucing it up!
I'm posting up links to the previs works, you can see how my ideas developed over time.
Take 1: This is the idea I had from the get-go.. a woman tapping mana from the ground, with it "leaking up from her body" - I wanted some sort of background, like monsters attacking. At this point I was thinking Elvish Biomancer (Remember the Simic have stasis cell) or even doing a kitsune in homage to the dog. At the same time this reminded me a little too much of the Fyndhorn Iceshaper in terms of composition. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y215/somnovore/stasisprevis1.jpg
Take 2: I did a search online googling "crouch" to get a closer approximation of what the shape and form of a female model would look like. I would have done my wife but she was gone on a 26 hour shift last sunday through monday. Anyways, my advice - If you're going to do any sort of human figure, get a model, or look one up on the internet. the middle one looks a little X-rated (no model) but the second one looks much better - I changed the face, souped up the body, and changed the leg and arm placement but her shoulders and hair are the same. The dude on the right was another idea I had but I didn't want to do a whole ring of them around her, so I let that die. His costume if from the "Dieties and Demi-Gods" D&D book... the original w/ the Cthulu mythos! At the end I added a blindfold, and a paintbrush at the spur of the moment. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y215/somnovore/stasisprevis2.jpg
Take 3: A natural progression of the piece (not bother to use the good model) - notice the layout at the top right where I decided what the final pattern of the paint "Maze" would look like. I started drawing octopus monsters then gave up and did those wierd things. I thought about adding Spirit Fish (from Betrayers) but I wanted to do my own thing. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y215/somnovore/stasisprevis3.jpg
Finally DONE!!!: At this point I started showing the piece and got the final suggestions from some friends: make her right thigh longer, and make it look like the lizard is coming out of the paint.I think the final is so radically different in terms of content that the similar composition to Fyndhorn is not much of an issue. What I get from this is that I need to start working on more action pieces than poses.
I wasn't sure what to do with clothing, I don't want to do the "generic naked fantasy chick" but at the same time I think she looked pretty good, so I settled with putting paint on her as well. At the end I realized I should have dressed her up as Morphling! LOL!
This took every evening this week! Bleh!

I think Bad Luck has my vote. I like El Garbo's style, but even before coloring Bad Luck's artwork is just too brilliant a take on this "Stasis" concept to ignore. You get props for the artwork itself as well as the creativity.
That is amazing. I am really looking forward to the coloring! I think it has a pretty good chance agiasnt El Garbo.
Prepare my fellow MTGSalvation Artwork Forum-goers, for:
El Garbo v. Bad Luck
Round 3
The Second Rematch None Of Us Ever Expected!
I think Bad Luck has my vote. I like El Garbo's style, but even before coloring Bad Luck's artwork is just too brilliant a take on this "Stasis" concept to ignore. You get props for the artwork itself as well as the creativity.
@El Garbo: You may have just won my vote :D.
El Garbo- Just simply amazing. I'm almost guarenteed to vote for you.
Not to criticize all of your enthusiam or anything but you're making it seem like the rest of us might as well not enter. It's still a long way until the deadline (I'm assuming the 20th) and you're already picking a winner.
People dont' seem to be into my realistic style (or I just suck) but I do like to think that I might have a chance of winning. Comments are always welcome but if it looks like your mind is already made up before the deadline you're missing the point of the contest.
I don't mean any offense, just trying to express my opinion.
Thanks
@Quiet Artist: I certainly haven't made my choice yet and don't intend to imply that I'll vote for any particular piece because I haven't seen them all! I really, honestly, truly hope that the art will get people pumped about submitting something as opposed to scaring them away. In truth, seeing El Garbo's and Mondu's inspired me to put more effort into my submission.
I also feel that there is always something awesome about every single piece I've seen posted, regardless of technique or experience.. everybody does something different and neat and just cause one looks more polished or realistic doesn't mean I'd vote for it. My old art teacher taught me that.. you can't quantify talent and there is always, always room for improvement. That's why I'm trying to practice so much.
Of course I will give props where I feel it's due. While I wasn't vocal about it, I liked your submission and style as well, and you did get a lot of votes last month with your piece. But that shouldn't matter, it's not a popularity contest.
@Sorryguy: Njustice almost won as well and in November I didn't get that many votes, so to say this is round 3 is somewhat inaccurate. I like the nod, though. :grin2:

I pretty much concur with Quiet Artist. For examply, much as I adore El Garbo's work, I don't say things like "well, you win!" even without seeing the other guys work.
Statements like that already reveal the mindset of the person saying them -- the contest is over, don't bother because you'll just embarass yourselves, and even if you do make something worthwhile I still won't vote for you. It discourages other entrants; Personally, after the comments on El Garbo's work I felt that I should be dropping out from the race.
In truth, seeing El Garbo's and Mondu's inspired me to put more effort into my submission.
That's certainly how I felt when I saw El Garbo's work (before reading the comments). I said, "whoa, got to put up a decent submission."
And maybe that's why I'm disappointed with one entry. I even like the MS paint, the pencil+scan, and the re-submission (which is still beautiful, IMO) more than that, and at least I got a chuckle from the oekaki (it actually made me wonder if I can get away with submitting an animation next month :)).
Great piece Bad Luck! I love your linework, although maybe you should crop the spiral holes on top.
Its certainly a big wrap hearing Bad Luck and Mondu say mine spurred them on to work harder. Cheers guys - I'm a massive fan of both of your work (the past two month's contests you've scored a vote each from me). What an ego booster..
Also, I do agree with QuietArtist's sentiments. Half the fun of these contests is seeing how everyone else interprets the same original concept. Keep the support up, but don't make decision until you can line up all of the submissions next to each other.
Ahem. Let's all just wait until the contest to vote, eh? I think that was the point here.
@ Quietartist: I agree. The artwork shown is just amazing from the other people ... I think that was the point. Hopefully your art blows them all away! Muahahaha.
@ Mondu: Thanks for saying mine isn't the worst! I feel better now, heh.
To be honest, what I've seen from Bad Luck and El Garbo in terms of figures ... there is much to study. Someday I will understand how to draw humans. Then the world will fear my drawing wrath.
[See my sig? I'm kind of understanding Paint ...]
*takes notes down, in order to redraw in something that isn't paint [note: if I do this, it will most likely be uncolored. That is, unless I break out my fully unused set of 16 Prismacolor coloring pencils. They're fancy.]

Hey, alls I'm sayin' is I really like the art. I by no means have made up my mind yet. If I say, "You have my vote," it doesn't mean I won't change my stance in a heartbeat, only that that one is the best so far. If someone posts something that I think is better, I'll vote for them. Don't get discouraged! Post the best one, so I'll say something like
"Wow, your art is, in my opinion, the best piece, and brutally ass-rapes the competition. Good job!"
Bleh ...
I think I'm replacing my art with this:
Below, original, uncolored, and then colored and sized.
It took a longer time to do this - probably 3~4 hours. I've never colored using these pencils before. As you can tell from the stars on the hat, it was a ... learning experience. But I love it. It has heart.
*If I could add flavor text: "A magician only has so many tricks he can pull out of his sleeve ..." ... ah, being a writer. It makes me want to do everything. Doh.
The only picture I've ever drawn where things look bad because of an actual stylistic choice! I love it.
.....
yay inverted dimensions!
lol. Well, the large one is on the right, but I did your work for you in the middle one. Or, that is to say, did MY work for you. Either one. Bleh, doesn't look so good like that though ... >< ... maybe for the next contest I have to take a note on the drawing size I am limited to.

@Sam: You got your dimensions inverted :p. It's supposed to be 630 wide and 460 tall. If you scan it at higher resolution, I can crop it to the right size.
No homage for me. Just straight forward stuff. I think I know what my problem in the contest is, I give up creativity for realism since I have to 'conecept' something I know I can colour realistically.
Anyway, I hope everybody likes them.
And the first one is the official submission, I just wanted to show the full piece as well.
EDIT: For the record, I don't really like them. Bleh!
