IMHO I also have a greater respect for traditional artwork as computer generated art is so different but still okay, as someone with no traditionals kill can still have the opportunity to create a great piece of art. Just in my opinion I prefer the old fashioned way. But also since I am at the moment supreme commander of this contest, I can assure you all there will never be any restricions on what medium you must use. That would just be silly.
I'm in the process of getting around to my entry, which will be in the old fashioned way like pringlesman (whose Art i must say is mighty fine). I have no desire to do computer generated art, Its just not my realm.
We have ten entries (although I dont know how serious they all are ) And I do appreciate people going out of their way to craft some awesome art for this months contest.

I'm not trying to be a dick here, but I have less respect for computer-generated artwork. I can't do it, but then again, I can't do pen and paper artwork either. It just seems so artificial. It never really looks as cool. Again, I'm not just flaming or anything, but pen and paper seems more skill-oriented while program stuff seems more formula-oriented.
I do computer generated art, but I also manually draw. The fact that you do or don't respect an artist for their chosen medium draws a definable picutre of your ignorance about art in general. It actually can take longer to complete a computer generated scene that it does to draw one. For example, Azrael, the character in this token is one of my primary works. She's taken over 250 hours of work. I draw, and a used to sculpt and paint. To me this is just another medium to discover and work through.

Although I agree with your words, Computer Generated work still requires skill to make good. If a larger portion of the audience continues to vote for Computer generated work, then the contest guidlines will most likly need to be changed, or encourage computer generated work.
It requires skill and talent. Who cares who the audience votes for and what does that have to do with the rules since there's nothing that specifies wha medium since drawn is merely a generic term for these contests.

While I appreciate your sentiment, slightly on the left as it may be... . I appreciate that there is to be no restriction on the medium used. A few contests back, drawings have won in the presence of renders. September - The Pants won here. August - Feerless Leader (Beefybot) won this one.

Hi. long time lurker, first time poster (here anyways) This was done with a standard click pencil, scanned, then color and effects were added with The GIMP ( a free ware clone of photoshop) Enjoy!

Alright, that was just a personal attack, Grimmshaw. I'm trying to have a discussion about artwork, and you have to go off about my "ignorance." You're not making a very good case for yourself. If I'm wrong, tell me why, don't just act all superior. This started with a compliment aimed at someone else, and someone decided they wanted an explanation. I don't know how you took it, but I was merely stating my opinion on a medium, and I certainly DO NOT pass judgements on the people who use such a medium.
This is exactly the kind of over-defensive bull$hit that happens when a medium is just a tad contraversial. If I had said that I don't like charcoal art that much, for whatever reason, that would have been left alone. Maybe I just don't like the way it looks. If I said that I didn't like it when people used colored-pencils, that would have been left alone. I'm entitled to my opinion. I didn't march in with 'ur art is teh suxxorz.' No, thought I was polite enough.
I'm sorry, you arrogant dickhole, I didn't realize that because it happens to be your medium, I'm not allowed to have opinions on it. Taste is subjective. Live with it.
Thanks for the Props folks. Funny you should mention, The final pic is a darker than one of the versions, I beefed up the contrast a little at the end, but otherwise it's alright, considering it's the first time I ever did a serious coloring job using a PC program (though I've done a ton of photo editing) If I spent more time I think I could make it more fluid, (like make all the effects match and fill in the white space) but I spent at least 8 hours on the thing and I just ran out of patience. I spent a lot of time just experimenting with effects. Sometimes the best dramatic effects are done by combining two really subtle layer changes and it takes a lot of time to figure out what works and what's just blah.

Nice job Bad_Luck, the way you use brush strokes suggest a dream like mannor, which is nice for a Djinn. Also i like the color palete used and how you limmited your self to 4 colors. Good job.
Taste _is_ subjective. Saying one medium is inferior to another is ignorance, and believe me, this is what you said. You're right, if you said you didn't like charcoal you would have been left alone. But if you had said that charcoal is less worthy of respect than paint because it takes less skill, guess what would happen?
I DID NOT say that. I said that I have less respect for it. Interperet it as you will.
Maybe I'm not good with words. What you seem to think I'm saying:
Computer generated art takes no skill at all, and is a horrible medium. Anyone who uses such a medium should not be called an artist.
Is that what you want to hear? Because I can say that. OR I can say what I mean:
I DO NOT like the way that computer-generated artwork looks, and therefore have less respect for the medium.
Also what I mean:
I aplogize if I happened to offend anyone with my choice of words above, but I believe that you are really just looking for someone to get in this argument with. I'm starting to feel like the scapegoat for an issue that is already here. Could you not have figured out that I just didn't like the way your art looks? Is that such a big deal?

The only thing you _didn't_ say is the text I bolded. No, you did _not_ say the latter. What you said was a amalgam of both. That computer generated art, including one painted in one (which also means bad luck, chronoplasm, el garbo [to whom you gave the first comment to], topher, tomothy, and raia) are works that have less skill involved in them.
but pen and paper seems more skill-oriented while program stuff seems more formula-oriented
Quoted for posterity, in case you deny saying anything again.
These aren't interpretation. Just look back at your posts. Don't blame your lack of skill at words, or your "taste", or your "opinion". Blame your ignorance.
I really don't care if you don't like my work -- few people do, but certainly enough to keep me doing what I do. But you've said that it takes less skill, so...lets just say the profanity filter won't allow me to express my opinion of YOU.
I'm starting to feel like the scapegoat for an issue that is already here.
Oh, really? Grimmshaw has won, and he's purely 3dcg. Other people who have used paint programs have also won. What, pray tell, is the issue at hand? That they are cg's so shouldn't win, and more people should listen to you? And when the artists themselves that you have said have little skill react, you get all defensive?
Alright. Whatever. I'm a terrible person, an ignorant person, I know nothing, think what you want.
If we're gonna make personal attacks, then I will say exactly what I mean. I tried not to offend anyone, but you went out of your way to get offended anyway.
When you create art on your computer, do you use your hands? Do you hold a pen, and draw on paper? No. You don't.
I have just as much respect for people who color on the computer as people who don't. They have skill. They have gift. They have whatever you want to call it. On a computer, what is it? Entering code? Copy and paste? Click and drag? Do you DRAW IT? Or do you CLICK IT? Do you SKETCH IT? Or do you ENTER IT?
I'm an artist. Am I good? No. I'm bad. I'm crap. The amount of time art takes is not the deciding factor in how much skill it takes. I can dig a hole for hours, does it take skill? No. I'm not ignorant. I'm opinionated. I know what you do, and I think it isn't skillfull. Your stuff is fromula. It isn't art, it's math. It's programming.
So fine. Call me what you will. I'm gonna say what I mean. You get on my nerves. Did you have to pick a fight? No. I'm gonna say: "Your medium sucks monkey-ass." Do you have an argument to prove me wrong? And don't just say "'Cuz you're ignorant." That's just avoiding the issue. EXPLAIN TO ME WHY YOUR MEDIUM IS VIABLE. If you can make a good case, I'll admit that I was wrong, and I'll apologize. And I'll mean it.
