I joined MTGS almost 6 years ago (2010). I had gotten back into Magic in the summer of 2009, right before starting university after taking 2 or 3 years off the game due to it slowing down pretty much to a stop in my area.
Late on in 2010, I couldn't really find the community in my school (turned out I didn't look hard enough)
I believe I just wanted to have somewhere to talk Magic searched MTG forums and this was the first one that came up and I've been here since
2011: Best Mafia Performance (Individual) - Best Newcomer
2012: Best (False?) Role Claim - Worst Town Performance (Group) - Best Mafia Performance (Group) - Best SK Performance - Best Overall Player

2014: Best Town Performance (Individual) - Best Town Performance (Group) - Most Interesting Role - Best Game - Best Overall Player
2015: Worst Mafia Performance (Group) - Best Read
2016: Best Town Performance (Group) - Best Town Player - Best Overall Player
I joined to post about my results the first time I played Modern at a store, because I was excited. (I lurked before then.) I follow the site mostly 1. for spoilers and spoiler discussion, because I often misevaluate cards and need other people to correct me, and 2. in the hope of chancing upon a strong budget deck to play whenever I become re-interested in a given format (my brews don't tend to end well). I also find the deck primers and other guides, for Standard, Modern, casual multiplayer, and Commander, extremely helpful. I also just find perusing forums relaxing.
I came to learn more about magic. The old Mothership Forum had just updated and become unusable on mobile, and barely passable on desktop. This was the best place to learn more about the meta game, and talk to real players without having to go the cesspool known as Reddit.
I stay because I really like the feel of the Modern and EDH sub forums. Feels like an actual community, which is something you don't see too often anymore.
I came to nerd out over the awesome SoI spoilers, and to show off my map-making skills. I stayed because I'm curious to learn why everyone hates Jace so much.

I came here because I was making a card set and somebody recommended this place for pictures. After that, I stuck around because if I had any questions about cards and their interactions, this was the best and fastest place to get answers.

Seriously now, it's a nice hub for discussing almost all aspects of MtG. Plus, most people are really polite.
I stay so I can find an excuse to not finish my MSc.

I stay for the community and the stupid ideas that come from this EDH forum.
I stayed because I love the community.
And I guess some of you guys are okay, or something.
