As Caranthir has recently noted in another thread, today is the 10th Aniversary of MTGSalvation - sort of. The forum is technically a few months older that that, but for all practical purposes it began in its current form on 1-1-05, following the great exodus from MTGNews.
Five years ago I made a thread asking the question who was still around from that time - Day 1 as it were. This Thread! Given it's been five more years, and I'm still here, I thought I'd do it again, just to see.
The forum search software is different now, and I couldn't figure out an easy way to search up all members who joined on a particular day. But you can look up all the forum members period, and then sort them by Oldest Members ->. This pulls up a lot of unfamiliar names with 0 posts who it says have been members since 1969, but given there was no forum in 1969, we can safely ignore these names.
My arbitrary cut off for "active" this time was anyone who has posted in the past 6 months. I then just scrolled through the names and found anyone who joined on 1-1-05 (or earlier). This time I got a list of 26 people (as opposed to the 33 I got five years ago), but not all the names are the same.
The following, then are our "Day 1" Veterans (Disclaimer: as before, I'm not trying to say the people on this list are better than anyone else. It's just an interesting look at a snapshot in time.) I believe this list puts people in their actual "join" order also.
Xenphire (our once fearless leader)
Sakabatou

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
Good to see you again! I popped back in for this, to reflect on how life changes in a decade. So much life happens.
I was digging through old PMs and found stuff I'd completely forgotten about; a glimpse into my own past. This place meant something to me, even more than I remembered.
One day, MTGS will cease to exist. It happened recently to the other MTG forum where I spent time and youth, and will happen to everything else.
When that day comes, hundreds of thousands of posts - the fossilized record of our hours spent long ago, either well or foolishly - will vanish.
When that day comes, a slice of our universe disappears - perhaps a tiny slice, but a meaningful one.
When that day comes, you will become keenly aware that the only remaining archive exists inside of yourself.
And when that day comes, you will all still hold a special place in my heart.
I guess I joined a week after the first day. I still usually visit MTGS multiple times a day, even if I don't post everyday. It doesn't seem like it's been that long, but this forum has given me years of enjoyment.
"Once fearless" leader eh? Leader I may not be these days, but did mod Magic General for a while before real life pulled me away, so I think the fearless part still counts But man, if I knew 10 years ago what I know now. Funny the difference between an 18 year old and a 28 year old.
Anyway, no matter how rough the start was and the journey has been, I'm super proud of all current and past staff volunteers for keeping the ship afloat and having the best interest of our community at heart. Regardless of anyone's personal feelings about how any part of the forums are managed or their perceived quality, we have some truly dedicated people here and we're all only human beings volunteering personal time to keep things running.
Personally I'd like like to thank Hannes for his massive support (if Hannes hadn't came along and bought our vBulletin license and made this website, the original server's bandwidth would've ran out within 3 days) and the lot that helped herd the wayward MTGNewsers here, including Xen for giving everyone a gathering spot in the massive transition.
But yeah, it's been 10 years of rumors, memories, fun times, terrible posts, forum games, ridiculous drama, and the game of MtG dying over and over. Here's to the next 10 years:

I about broke my brain trying to talk in 3rd person for years
There is not many left. Greek Alliance, once a great clan who I joined just weeks before the exodus, was dissolved in 2011. And I just found out that The Called, once an essential part of Clans forum, was closed in 2013. Where is Project Mayhem? Fuzzy Furry Freaky Battalion? Oh, memories...
Much has happened. Here at the forums, I became a respected RM and Storyline poster, later a moderator of Storyline, Storyline and Clans, Storyline, Clans and Rumor Mill, Storyline and Rumor Mill, Rumor Mill, and finally stepping down. I saw many forum dramas, many friendships shaken. I lived through amazing rumor seasons (R_E, Hydrokinesis, CaptainBlack, zesty, etc...) I saw spoilers finished week or two before prereleases. And I saw the lives of Rancored_Elf and Hydrokinesis turned topsy turvy by the Wizards lawsuits...
I remember the enormous amount of time I spent here, discussing whatever came. I remember times when the clan thread grew three pages a day I remember playing TFE's knowledge games. I remember being online almost permanently, as my PhD life allowed to back then. I remember the Storyline forum bursting with activity, back when the novels were for each set, and the great discussions we led with people like Zazdor, Shadowlord, spiritual_herder, ixidorsdreams (no wonder all GA members ) The Squirle Master, later MORT, Barinellos or Maybe Eid. Back, when the storyline was deep and in hands of people who meticulously paid attention almost to every detail as us.
Dear friends met online, my fellow clansmen from GA, couple of whom I managed to meet in real life as well during my scientific travels, and who I maintain contact with still. In the era of mails and Facebook, it works
In real life,I broke up after a long relationship, wed in another three years and became a father in another four. From a PhD freshman hardly knowing what to do with his life I became an R&D manager and family breadwinner. More responsibility, less and less time.
But something persisted. The passion for the game. And despite I had periods of extreme inactivity, when I lost all zest for discussions and posting, and posted hardly once a month, MTGS is still a page that I visit almost daily. Too much time spent here to let it just slip into oblivion
So, I raise a proverbial glass to MTGS and every veteran here I wonder how many of us will meet here in another five years, but as Sene said, here's to at least another ten!

Let this great clan rest in peace (2001-2011)
Woah. It's been a while. I've been here for a bit more than half of that (Don't let the curse screw up date fool you) at around 6 years. I remember a lot of the names on this list but can swear never have seen some of those before. This instead made me think of the changes in those 6 and 9 years of MTGS and MTG.
I've just gotten back into Magic after some long hiatus.
Started on MtGNews circa 2001, actively posted between there and here for nearly a decade before falling off in 2009. Primarily lurked the Add-A-Story Boards for much of that time, sometimes with card creation, ect. I remember the old Add-A-Story Board members tried to keep themselves together (here is an old list of that time, I believe compiled by Senori as suggested by the account: http://senori2000.tripod.com/therpgclan/id1.html).
Life pretty much too over after getting out of college in 2009. Became a successful store manager in retail, but the hours and grind make it hard to do the things I used to do as a hobby.
Today I lurk more than I post as I struggle to integrate back into the hobby. I have the funds to fuel the obsession, but the lack of time makes it that much difficult to enjoy the hobby than ever before.
While i joined on 2005 i joined to late to be of importance
It really has been a hell of a time here in MTGS sometimes i look back and really miss the excitement and overall chaos every day brought me here in the boards, I joined simply because i was bored and was looking for some news about this card game i had just returned to after only playing it a few times back in Beta.
Funny how things turned out...

I'm one of the old farts - not a day one-r, mind you, but pretty close. EDIT: Day three-er! I remember now - not on New Years, but I was visiting family and they were still on dial-up internets!
I was in 'News for at least 3 years too and made a post about it here somewhere... I tried to log in there a while ago and was able to browse some of my old Custom Card content, which was fun. I've saved all my card ideas I think. Now 'News exists only on the waybackmachine webpages I reckon.
Glad to see fellow oldies. I mostly lurk around the Casual forums and the Custom Card forums and used to post quite a lot on the Customs. I tend to lurk moar than post at the moment only because of this old computer is no fun, but I am buying a new one this or next month so I expect I will be posting more soon!
Love the community here and thankful for it, happy decade!
I also joined in 2005 (though not day 1!) but I was a lurker at MTGNews for a while, and was around to see the creation of this site. Glad it's stuck around so long. I was just thinking about this, actually; I was starting to notice how few members have a join date as old as mine, so it's cool to hear about all the people who've been around from the start.
As someone who joined in 2005 but not in January 2005, I'd like the elite club to be 2005ers instead
Happy 10 years Sally.
Yeah, I feel bad singling out just "Day 1" like it's something super important. But if I started to go back further, there would be too many people to list. There are actually a lot of people who have been here a long time. And now 211,000+ members.
So, I raise a proverbial glass to MTGS and every veteran here I wonder how many of us will meet here in another five years, but as Sene said, here's to at least another ten!
Which means 'News was around even further back than that. How much of my life have I spent with you people?
Anyway, good to see you still around Axelrod. Although, Vote Axelrod for making me acutely feel the passage of time.
Heh. Haven't typed that in a while.

Fellow 2005'er, though I lurked. A lot. Then got involved with some of the sports threads. Then that pretty much died. Now I complain about Magic Online a lot. Funny, I didn't play MODO in 2005, but people complained about it then too. So at least one thing is the same I suppose.
