Are there any moderators out there who can actually stop a thread from spiraling out of control? I feel as if I have been strung up on a cross for what I believe in, in the game we so passionately write about on a daily basis.
Why leave it alone, thinking it might untie itself from the knot it has become?
I have been publicly chastised for an entire day. Please, check the negative, something is wrong with this picture.
Who is the mod for the "Magic General" forum? May I have a word with you in private (PM me please)?
Hey Stoogeslap, part of the issue here is the lack of reporting. The moderators don't necessarily read every post in every forum they moderate (there are simply too many posts), and so they depend on users reporting problematic posts (click on the report symbol: ). In this case, I can't see that you've made any reports recently, so I suggest starting there!
Here's the thing. I did report the the thread that was making fun of me around 9pm Pacific Time & the rantings and ravings continued on.
I feel publicly shamed and had even considered at one point shutting down my account and going somewhere else to discuss Magic (I have been a member for over 7 years now).
I don't mean to be difficult here, and it's obviously bad that you're singled out, but you did not report the thread. I have a log of all reports made, and you haven't made any in several months. Perhaps you wrote a report but forgot to submit it, who knows, and it doesn't really matter, but the point is that the Magic General mods haven't received any reports, and therefore it's hard to really demand action from them. So I suggest reporting it now, and hopefully things will work out. Sounds good?
I'll give it a go. I don't know what has happened to my "reporting." I would like to either see a mod step in w/in the hour or just see the threads, both, closed.
UPDATE: There, I did it... twice (one for each of the threads).
I just logged in (slogged into work despite the snowstorm). I have shuttered the antagonizing thread, as it's rather silly (you win the game by reducing an opponent's life total to 0, so 20 damage is perfectly sensible).
As for the Reported Posts in your own thread, while you may find that the initial responses slighted you, I perceive them as contrary viewpoints that are presented in a civilized and detailed manner, as opposed to just slamming you and saying "hurrdurr no fun allowed ur silly." I did not see anything at the start of your thread that I found crossing lines, but I will quickly review that thread again.
EDIT: Just got through the thread. The closest thing to antagonism in your thread is people citing "elitism" or custom rules; beyond that, the majority of the thread is well-composed and quite directed about the argument at hand. I'd go so far as to say that the thread itself is doing quite a good job at engendering a good back-and-forth. Nothing directly attacks other posters, and the closest thing to conflict is the responses that others have to each other regarding the "full-on kill in one shot" versus the "99% likely to win the game (Dragonstorm example, et al.)"
I agree that the other thread was vastly unnecessary and served to do nothing but antagonize you and gather up posters to stir a pot, which is why it was closed when I got to it. Do you still wish for your original thread to be closed?
Yes I do. I found quite a few to draw accusations regarding my play group as being elitists, amateurs, kicking out the winner to play for 2nd (which is true, but it's not a punishment as it has been made out to be - we have multiple games going on, when one is out he/she jumps into other games).
The thread wasn't about whether it is right or wrong to have our policy, it was more for giving reasons for infinite-combos. Which if you read it carefully, only about 20% of the responses answer that question.
Instead, others found it to be an excuse to talk about the pseudo elephant in the room, if you get my drift. It became an excuse to complain about a groups play style. And I bet you that 99% of those rock-throwers will NEVER ever play in my play group. So why should they care how we handle infinite-combos? WHY should anyone care how we do things. Not that we do this, but if we decide to have 8 cards, or a life total of 30, it's our prerogative. Just like some EDH games start w/ 30 life, others start w/ 40 life. Hell, EDH was originally 100 life divided among all of the players in the game (1v1 was 60 life each, 1v1v1 was 33 life each, 1v1v1v1 was 25 life each, etc...).

So, once again, please close that thread.
What you don't get is your argument became, for a lot of magic players similar to:
"Why do people like gays? In my playgroup, if you are gay, we tell you to go elsewhere while we keep doing what we want while pretending you were never here. I don't care that others don't agree, 99.9% of them will never play with me anyways, so why should it matter that I think my sexual orientation is better than theirs."
When you look at it like that. It seems pretty obvious why people disagree to the extent they do.
Just read what you posted and tell me you're not being antagonistic.
What's the appeal? Is it knowing you have found a way to break the game? Is the humility one can put another through by being the butt of the joke by having the infinite combo go off on you? Is it the challenge of finding new ways to break cards? Is it just to say that not only did you think it up, but you pulled it off (Way to go Felix, any another other "nifty" tricks in that hat of yours?")?
(emphasis mine)
In just that one paragraph, you:
1) imply that combo players don't take their work seriously, calling it a "joke"
2) imply that combo players get some sort of perverted satisfaction from watching others suffer
3) make a sarcastic comment belittling the creativity of combo players
When you say things like that, don't be surprised at the replies you receive.
Why are people who are passive aggressive so thin skinned? It's almost like they want to be offended so that they can have something to... oh, wait. I think I've got it now.
Why leave it alone, thinking it might untie itself from the knot it has become?
