Of course there's something thy can do about it. Not move to the beta site and keep MTGS as is. It's completely in their control, and totally their decision to move to a site they know will be blocked. I agree that a technology solution is not feasible, however, not moving the site to one that is blocked by what appears to be a large number of firewalls is a decision they could easily make.
And IMHO getting annoyed at your users for complaining about not being able to get to your product is a pretty awful mentality for a company to have. It would be like Ford saying "Stop complaining your tires are blowing up and killing people, it's Firestones fault, there's nothing we can do about it! Gah, you are all so annoying!!"
Keeping the site as it is, is not a viable long term solution. The vBulletin platform we are currently on is creaking at the seams. To the extent that some of the normal features we use have need to be shut down at times in order to keep the rest of the site up.
If we want this site to remain up long term we need to transfer to a lot more stable platform, preferably in a nice controlled manner where we do have an intact database here if something goes wrong in the migration. Instead of a panicked and rushed transfer because this place has finally fallen apart and no one can put it back together.

I understand people's frustration at the firewall issue, but if it's a choice between being blocked by certain firewalls and using forum software that's not as secure I'd much rather we go for the option that's going to keep the forum secure and in doing so protect users.
You can't protect me if I'm not here anymore!!
Overdramatic, yes, but I'm sad. It was fun while it latest, but I understand. I think we all do. It's just sad.

LOL. Well, I guess they did hit the security thing out of the ballpark. Nothing more secure than not being able to access the site!
I agree it is sad, but it was probably an inevitability anyway, Curse or no Curse. Websites changing and getting worse and losing their community and dying off is just part and parcel with the internet. MTGS is certainly not the first and certainly won't be the last.

Then fix it. I was a web developer and coder for 10+ years. There's no such thing as software that can't be upgraded to be more secure, more capable, and more robust on the back end. Burning it to the ground and jumping ship to a new platform is far from the only option.
You know, I get that there are some features we'd like to see in the new forum software that aren't there yet. And I get that it's annoying to not be able to check the forums from behind an office firewall. However, the latter of those two issues is completely outside of Curse's control. They're not tagging their own site as gaming-related; the firewall folks are doing that. And pretty much anything they do that ties MTGS to the main Curse site will set off the firewall. Sure, Curse could leave everything out here, on a forum they're not well-equipped to support, and not leverage any of their own in-house technology, I guess. And then, two months later, the firewall group will update their blacklist and add MTGS to it anyway.
I do understand everyone's frustration, but as someone who has done some web development, I can tell you there's no way I'd be trying to get around someone else's firewall. There's nothing you can do about it. And frankly I'd be pretty annoyed if my users were complaining to me about being blocked by the firewall on their end.
I don't think people are being spiteful about the move, it is just a practical matter. If they cannot browse the site at the location they generally do, or if they cannot view the site in the manner that is comfortable for them, then they will move on to another site that will provide these things. No one except Valarin is cranky about it so far as I have read, and he is cranky about everything, we are just stating the practical impact this will have for us. It is not a matter of overreacting, it is a matter of reacting based on our realities.
For me: I will get migraine headaches if I read a forum that has a light background for too long, so if there is no easy way for me to change that functionality it is a reality that I cannot browse the site for very long. I would not leave out of anger or spite, just basic practicalities.

I asked this on the beta site and never got an answer, so how about here. Is there any possibility to keep the current MTGS server as a proxy to the curse site?

Sadly your banned so you wont see this BUT for others. I am pretty sure the knowledge of most staff here is not competent in doing the needed coding and time to do such an overhaul. But granted even with the knowledge I know like hell in years would I do such a task for free and based on that I feel they don't have anyone else that would do it for charity ether. Thus the next answer is to burn the ship and jump to the other that pulled along side.
Serious question: What info is on MTGS that a lack of security could compromise?
If the lack of security is no more than a minor issue (given that's the only real reason I see for going to Curse), I don't see why we'd sacrifice a large portion of the userbase over a concern that has little foundation.

As the forum software breaks down and becomes more susceptible to security breaches, any information you put on the forums by being here is at risk. The e-mail addresses of all the registered users is a pretty big thing; so are the IP addresses you submit every time you log in or post. There was a scare in the past wherein some users began getting spam advertisements in their e-mail from Blizzard Entertainment for World of Warcraft, and the only possible source could have been through the advertisements or a security breach in our software. That's not even remotely the worst thing someone could do with your e-mail or IP address, though.
Also, to suggest that we're sacrificing a large portion of our user base in the move would be to highly exaggerate the consequences of the move.

It's a bit of a false dichotomy, isn't it?
Surely, there's some room for mediation or middle ground?
If categories of websites can be changed by Curse or staff, perhaps votan could keep his old post?

I identify two main issues associated with inadequate or poor security.
E-mails and other PII, which have profound implications.
Depending on jurisdiction and agreement between Forum and User, lack of security resulting in security breach and theft (should be with inverted commas) of user information can constitute breach of duty of care or of contract.
Awesome! I see it works fine on the card database section, so maybe an 'advanced tag' option for forum posts to reference a specific version of a card?
I just want to say that unless there is a way to change color schemes of the new page, I will not be posting anymore come the switch. I cannot stand the color choices. Currently there are 7 choices, moving to what should be an improved system there is 1. Also the entire Curse network seems so intrusive to the forum. Also the facebook and twitter buttons need done away with, or at least moved to the bottom of the page. I dont care about all the other games that Curse seems to think I need to see, I come here for Magic.
Also I see you say it will be faster out of beta, I really hope so because current Salvation loads so much faster. Its like being on a slow motion forum over on the beta.
I can't create a Curse ID. Ever single username I've tried is taken, even a couple gibberish random button clicks I hit as an experiment. Nothing works.
I HATE the Beta. Can't you migrate to a new, more stable platform behind the scenes and make everything stay the same in terms of appearance and UI?
How about a productive comment instead of a rant, yeah? We want to improve the site - not lose functionality and members of the community. So, let's make the assumption that we are going to move. From there, what would make that move good for you and what would make you say "Wow, this is even better than my old home?"

I think this explains why people are resistant to the changes. The mere act of adapting means that the site is decaying. And yes, while I did list a TV trope, it still happens in real life.
Basically Gals, people will bash it, so its changed and salve will die, a month or so will pass and eventually people will adapt. And if it really is a bad change, it will become apparent soon enough.
I know people will bash it, and that's fine. But that is not what we want here and it sure isn't going to help anything. We have a receptive group of designers and programmers who want to make the users here happy. Respect that, but also use that to your advantage.

Making it so that it doesn't get flagged as a gaming site would have to be pretty high on that list, apparently. But, equally apparent, that's not a possibility or...?
If there really is a "receptive group of programmers", why has it taken so long for such minor things to get changed?
