Please do not post just to thank people for the answers you have received to your rules question. Gratitude for good answers is best expressed through the "thank you" button on each post.
I like the "thank you" function both as a receiver and a giver of thanks, because it is easy for people to see that someone gave a worthwhile post that helped someone else. Thanks show up on people's profiles! Many people are happy with the answers they are given in the rulings forums and the time people put into giving those answers. Having those thanks show up on their profile would be cool, rather than having them hidden away in individual threads.
I am somewhat active in the Magic Rulings forums, so there is no hiding that this rule would benefit me. Please evaluate my suggestion on it's own merits though. Perhaps such a rule would be good for many, even most, forums on MtGS. I think I saw such a rule somewhere, but I can't find where. I am looking forward to any discussion and eventually an answer to whether anything like this will be implemented.
"Thanks" posts are already considered spam by the sitewide forum rules:
Spam
A spam post is any post that does not contribute an original thought, advance the discussion, or add on-topic content to a thread. Examples of spam posts include, but are not limited to: bumping a thread (other than a haves/wants trading list), discussing a topic that is not relevant to the thread it's posted in, and posting excessively short messages such as "thanks", "k", "QFT", "Oh god no", etc.
Emphasis mine. Even something slightly more verbose, like "thank you for your help," still boils down to that same concept. I'm not a Rulings mod, though, so I admit it may be worth consideration to emphasize this in the Rulings forum guidelines.
A post saying Thank you is one of the exceptions to the No off Topic discussion rule over in Rulings
1.5 No off-topic discussions. The Rulings forum is a place for discussing the Magic game rules and tournament policy, so only post if you're either asking or answering a rules question. Posts about strategy advice (combos, strategies, deckbuilding, etc.) or anything else that isn't directly related to the rules and the question being asked are not permitted.
Exceptions: 'Thank you' posts are permitted to acknowledge that your question has been answered. Including minor strategic hints in a post that answers a rules question is okay, but posts that contain nothing but strategy advice are spam.
As to the OP I am of two minds. I can see where Auja is coming from, most of us regulars down in the rulings area automatically open every thread which has new post on it and it can be a little frustrating to open a thread and start preparing an answer only to see that it was answered sufficiently a while back and the only reason why it has come back up is the thank you. Is it frustrating enough to warrant banning the practice no it isn't and the act of gratitude does help make some of the effort we go through worthwhile.

"The above post is the opinion of the poster and is not indicative of any stance taken by the President of the United States, Congress, the Department of Defense, the Pentagon, the Department of the Navy, or the United States Marine Corps."
I'm not going to speak for Carsten or parinoid, but actual posts to thank users seems more meaningful to me, and easier to immediately see "oh, yes, the OP got his answer." Unlike most subforums, the entire purpose of the Rulings forum is to provide help, which changes the nature of "thank you" posts somewhat.
I'd also really rather not add another rule. -_- I'd rather look at the forum-wide rule against "thank you" posts as something that might not be in the best interest of user interaction.
What about "thank you" posts bugs you, Auja? I can see Kahdron's point of "I click all the threads with new posts," but is that what you dislike, too? Hard to look at exactly why it bothers you without knowing that reason.

Would it be possible to allow users to close their own threads in the Rulings section? I've been on other forums where you could close your own thread. This way, when you get your answer, you can close your own thread so that everyone knows it has been answered and so other people don't come along and start posting more non-relevant information. And of course, if someone got the wrong answer and prematurely closed their own thread, one of the staff could re-open it or post the correct response in the thread anyway.

I'm with you on this one Auja. People should simply click the like button in the bottom left corner of the post that helped them. Instead of bumping the thread to the top of the page with a new post when the thread has served its intended purpose.

Then why not have a rule allowing thank you posts in rulings?
What I mean is that the OP's proposal is passed, but a rule is added to rulings that allows it.
If section-specific rules can be more strict on somethings the main rules allow, then why can't they allow more leiniency?

Thanks for showing me that.
Then where would be the issue in the OP's proposal? We have a forum specific rule where its allowed....
If I read the OP's post correctly, he/she believes that the practice of posting "Thank you" should be prohibited. His/her argument is that "Thank you" posts has been rendered somewhat obsolete by the "thank you" forum function (located on the left hand side, beside the report button. This newly added system function has the further advantage of not unnecessarily bumping up threads and actually showing up in the profile of the ones who got thanked (the "thankee", if you will). Also, it is a minor nuisance to forum regulars to open the threads which has new posts (to address any follow up question) only to find that it is simply a post expressing "thank you".
The above are not my opinions though. Just summarising the salient points of those proposing that thank you posts should be prohibited -- apologies if I got anything wrong.
I see the "thank you" button as less of a "thank you for this information" and more of a "Hey, I like this post!". It's really not the same thing.
If I wanted to thank someone for answering my question (which really is the polite thing to do), I wouldn't consider clicking a thumbs-up as a substitute for that.

Exactly. Thanking a post means different things for different people. The OP thanking a post does not necessarily mean that the question has been completely answered to the OP's satisfaction.
