I don't know if this is technically possible, but can moderator's have the area they moderate listed under their name?
I know I can look on each forum somewhere and find out who is the moderator for that forum, but if its possible this would seem easier and more user friendly.
It's not a huge deal, more just a "feature request".
Try looking at the Forum Leaders page. That'll list every forum a staff member moderates.

Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.

I get that, but my point is more along the lines of putting yourself in a new users shoes. New user logs in, wants to post in magic General. makes a post. Someone with the tag "moderator" replies and says something vagule related to site rules.
How is the new user supposed to that Blinking Spirit is a moderator in the debate forums, and anything he says in magic general is on the same level as any other user? (Note, this is not based on any sort of real events or anything, just a hypothetical).
That's probably your best best. Makes you appreciate just how much text would be required in some cases for bLatch's request.

Probably not feasible.
Thats true, I wasn't aware there were mods that had that many subforums they were mods for. I always assumed that a mod in a given subforum was also a mod in all sub forums under it (IE Blinking spirit is a mod in Debate, as well as in Religion and philosophy sub forums).
A simple indication whether a mod is actually responsible for the section s/he posted in should be fine then, I guess.
Providing, of course, this is feasible under vB, err, duh, 3.8? or whatever this is here.
I haven`t got a vB license to play around, and $200 is certainly not 'that cheap'.

Yep, you had that right, which is why BS would only have "Debate" listed, despite modding Religion and Philosophy as well. For most of us it wouldn't be a big deal, but there are a couple who are spread around the forum that would look pretty unwieldly.
Some of us (like me) just choose to put it in our sigs for the exact reasons you stated. I guess we could make that a requirement if there was enough push to see it done. Realistically, though, the confusion that a new poster might feel isn't really going to be that big a deal for them.
Is there no way to have a little star or other special symbol appear by a moderator's name whenever he/she is posting in a forum that said person is moderating?
I'm not sure what level of coding it would take though...

I could see it being slightly strange to a new user, but usually mod instructions are in Red. Other than thread moves, normally you don't see a mod using red text outside of their area.
Possible, but not probable anytime soon. We've got a pile of ironing out bugs created from the vB upgrade.
Visibility is good, though, so I'll put it on the list
Good to know we can even do that.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Would it be possible to use another color than bold red when you are not issuing warnings or infractions? Red is a very flamboyant and harsh color (bold harsher still), and something a bit softer like bold blue would be nice to convey that while official business is happening, it's a bit less... overbearing.
I don't know if this has been discussed in the past, but I've found the dichotomy to be useful.

This was discussed extensively during the most recent revamp of the forum rules. While several current and former staff members supported this change, it was ultimately decided that consistency and visibility were more valuable.
Do you have a link to any threads in question, or is this something that only exists in restricted access areas? I would like to read the arguments that led to this decision if they are here in the open.

Most of the discussion took place in the Moderator Lounge, which is restricted to current staff members. The public parts of the discussion are all contained in this thread, where the color change proposal is listed as #6 in the original post.
Besides, sometimes (or a lot of times) the section's mod also posts as a regular user in his own forum. Why would their posts need to look any different then? I think having them listed in both the general index and at the bottom of each forum is enough to know who to go to when you need a mod.
Plus, by 2012 who hasn't used vBulletin to know that anyway, even if they're new to this particular website about magical cards?
Here's a fun question: Can the admins tell what percentage of users browse with sigs disabled? Asking all mods to note their forums in their sigs wouldn't be a huge burden (with expanding mod sigs to compensate if the software will allow it), but if a significant portion of the userbase disables sigs, it wouldn't be as useful.

I guess OP wants it to be 'keyworded' like "dies" was. What word would you replace ETB with though?
When Aegis Angel is born?
When Huntmaster of the Fells arrives?
When Kitchen Sphinx lands?
When Faerie Imposter busts in?
When Dread Cacodemon pops in?
When Malfegor shows up?
