Okay, I don't know if this was something before 2007 when I first joined this site but in the last year there has been a huge surge in the number of members who create obvious topics that are trolling and just generally flame other users for no specific reasons.
Is there ANY way that we can request for certain members to be banned and it actually be taken into consideration? I know they can just make a new account but it's really getting on my nerves. This is a relatively small community (At least the members who post regularly) and if you post enough on here you're going to recognize certain users as obvious attention trolls. So, yeah; anything you guys can do?

It sounds like you are referring to the members that manipulate the rules in order to troll without getting infracted for trolling. From my experience, there are only a couple members on this site that do this. I would just put them on your ignore list.
But yes, I agree that threads have become pretty ridiculous in the last ~1-2 years. I still blame the influx of users from the WotC forums when they were having server issues a few years ago for bringing in a large number of users that aren't used to forums with a little more modding. (EDIT: Although, I suppose that's more responsible for the angsty posters we see pop up in CI every now and then, and not what the OP was specifically talking about)

Lol the two you mentioned are two of the three I'm talking about. That just goes to show that these certain posters are obviously trolling and need to have their IP's banned. Especially since I think King Pun is a multi accounter.
@ Rabid: I've tried doing this but then it's annoying seeing other users replying to them so I just don't bother with it anymore. Certain members turn entire healthy topics into flame wars and they're easily recognizable.

Trolling is against the rules, and while it's sometimes difficult to pin down, a person can't be an outright troll while obeying the rules. If you believe a post is trolling, please report it and explain your concerns in the report. I can't speak for my fellow moderators, but for me a report that says:
"I believe this is trolling because this user has posted similar statements in other threads that have in turn been locked. The statement is only tangentially related to the topic and is likely to cause angry replies."
is more impactful and easier to evaluate than one that says:
"troll lulz".
If you've reported multiple posts and not seen any action, you can contact the moderators for the appropriate forum privately and ask what their reasoning is. If you believe specific users are harmful to the site as a whole, you can contact the senior staff privately, either by PM or through the Staff Inbox.

Ahh, but don't you love topics like "Lol look at my epic formal attire LGS" or "Hey I need to rip people off for gas money and moonpies?"
Personally I think that it is difficult to out them positively as trolls. I have been around mtgs for more than a little while now and there have been plenty of so-called "dumb threads."
I think so far the moderators have kept up with closing down nonconstructive discussions and keeping open the ones with some actual insight despite the topic. I just don't think that a serious thing like banning someone should happen to someone only suspected of trolling.
To analogize that last statement similar to one of Infallibles favorite "trolls:"
"The suspected trolls are like small time drug users, banning should be saved for the mtgs felons like rippers and bad traders."
I loved the topics about $10 moonpies and scamming children and tuxedo wearing juggalos (lol?) at first but since then I've just been noticing this thing more often than not with other posters.
Thanks Viricide, I'll probably do that.

To be perfectly honest and I'm not too proud to admit it , those threads did gave me a good laugh. It was as entertaining and as obvious that it was trolling. The Moonpies and Tuxedo was an all time classic, so were most of the replies. That said, we can't expect those threads to go on forever, but anyway it was fun while it lasted.

When you have been around enough people, let alone those that exist anonymously on the internet, you start to understand some of the depths of human stupidity. We're all capable of doing "dumb things," and most of us are guilty of either purposefully or accidentally doing this at one point in time or another.
Incidentally many beginners in the mtg community follow this same universal pattern of doing "dumb" things and then slowly trend out of it by learning about the community.
Therefore, it is hard to determine whether someone is really trolling, or is just "new" and should be treated more delicately by the player base. Unfortunately the internet is not very forgiving.

I agree with this, new posters get this burden and I hope that as I become a veteran this rough treatment stops. I looked at the forum rules and I have never berated or made fun of someone called "flaming" to deserve the constant "King Pun is a roll" in all of my topics and responses. It seems that because someone does not believe my accounts of my LGS or if I do not agree on someone elses stance (which often happens to me) I am then accused by certain mods of trolling. This has made me afraid to even start threads anymore. Others mods seem to be MUCH more undertanding which leads me to wonder why some of my responses are ok by some mods but this other mod constantly closes my threads and accuses me of trolling which other mods dont see.

This isn't really the proper place to voice such concerns however. As Viricide noted, the best way to report such trends are the report system, staff inbox, and PMs to the staff. Making a public thread like this with specific users in mind, even if it leaves the naming to other people, is just liable to create flaming and hurt feelings and may be even be categorizable as trolling itself since it predictably may incite the targeted users themselves.
I would also point out that Viricide did not comment on whether anyone was a troll; he indicated the proper channels for voicing this type of concern.

I can imagine King Pun being vindicated once he produce photos of players in his LGS wearing tuxedo and paying for moonpies.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.

You would think they would ban trolls, right? These days they just make them into mods for some reason.
Seriously, did you know one of the big admins on here actually started out as a troll that came over from Misetings. He even got warnings and temp bans and everything for pic spamming and all that trolly stuff.
It's definitely not a bannable offense or anything. I mean, I know I'm gonna get quoted by some mod now who's gonna go on to be all serious and be like "trolling is absolutely a bannable offense if a user is constantly harassing another, yadda, yadda" but I know what's up.

Now Jolly, if you don't watch it with the passive-aggression, people are going to start thinking you're bitter they haven't asked you to be a mod yet.

Which admin? Sene? Ria? Viperesque? You might be talking about Annorax and/or Yukora but that doesn't seem right since one is a global not an admin and the other stepped down a few months back so I don't think either qualify as a big admin on here. Of course, I don't think that can be it since neither of them were still problematic users when they were added to the staff and their trolly bad pasts were literally years ago by the time either made it to administrator. Which I think only accentuates the overall policy of the site to acknowledge when a user grows up. Members with spotty pasts can be staff if they've proven that behavior is long gone, banned users can appeal now if they can show that things are different now. I don't think the site believes that a user's distant past can necessarily be used against them years down the road.
It's definitely not a bannable offense or anything. I mean, I know I'm gonna get quoted by some mod now who's gonna go on to be all serious and be like "trolling is absolutely a bannable offense if a user is constantly harassing another, yadda, yadda" but I know what's up.
It certainly wasn't a bannable offense for some time, the user would just wind up getting suspended for increasingly longer periods of time (we had a few dedicated trolls who got suspended for a year at a time at one point). But now with ban appeals, I could understand if the staff just cut their losses with particularly horrid members. I know there's a couple I wish we could have banned rather than suspend for years at a time. But again, that would have to be extreme cases not just minor annoyances easily tossed on an Ignore List and forgotten like King Pun.
If a thread is made, and you read the original post, and you think it might be trolling, check the content. If it isn't anything really harmful to the forums, or something that is an infractable offense, then just ignore it. Nobody is forcing you to post there. And, hey, there's no harm in reporting the thread as questionable. But, there is no reason to get involved with things that bother you if they are not directly affecting you, or are infractable. Even then, the proper procedure is to report, not to post. I personally believe that posting by calling someone a troll, unless it's a joke, should be considered backseat moderating.
KingPun, who many of you believe is a troll (Note- This is me stating an observed opinion, not my own opinion.) makes a lot of questionable threads, yes. But, let me ask, do any of them contain content that is harmful, negative, inflammatory, or religiously/politically charged? If so, report those posts/threads. If not, then either just report it as questionable and go on with your life, or ignore it altogether. While I don't believe the things King Pun claims (And Pun, I do apologize for any offense that causes. I have no personal opinion of you, though, so it should not be considered an insult to you as a person) but I also do not jabber on in their threads about how I don't believe them. Actually, I get a good laugh out of the threads sometimes, and may even post with just things like "Oh look, it's King Pun again. Where's Tapout guy?", which I hope is understood to just be good fun.

Nod. As dumb as threads may be, its harmless compared to the people who like to randomly pop in and verbally own somebody without warrant with either snide remark or intellectual insult. This phenomenon ranges in severity depending on the section; I think standard and WTC is prolly the worse. I attribute this behavior to not owning in real life and thus the internet provides a place they can. This and people who post things like "Traavon deserved it" or the victim in baltimore (?) was an idiot. Forum could do without these peoples. WTC also seems more like "Debate Forum II" though mods do a great job of moving the BS out.

That guy totally wanted you. You know it.
Funny enough, most people I see wearing affliction shirts have no involvement in the sport. Whereas I've been a practitioner of MMA (along side 2-3 different combat sports) for some 14 years and don't own an affliction shirt.

Just wanted to touch on this issue since WCT is my area.
I would encourage people to remember that you have a lot of freedom when it comes to reporting posts. Most of the reports I get just have a single word under the "reason". This works well for posts that are obviously breaking the rules, but it's less helpful for situations where the problem is a pattern of behavior (e.g. a person who persistently "toes the line" so that no single post breaks a rule). If you notice something like this, please let the moderators of the appropriate section know! You can do this by manually sending a PM, reporting a post and giving a detail explanation, or posting in the Staff Inbox. I hope that's at least a little helpful / enlightening.

And emember: They're only a troll if they rustle your jimmies~

*shrug* but anyway
My Buying Thread
