Is it wrong or against the rules to celebrate if someone who had really annoyed you or pissed you off gets suspended or banned? Or is it simply in bad taste? I've seen a lot of "good riddance" posts when more infamous users got banned in the past, like Kroen and Tneil, but I'm asking to be on the safe side here.

I just really feel like celebrating though.

Well, under the old system, I got a flame warning for flaming someone that was banned. I'm not sure if that's still the case, but it better not be, since a lot of times the mod or admin that bans them is quite insulting as they do it.

I don't know. It's arguably in bad taste, but at the same time I don't see how the mods could really complain. I mean, if they made the decision to get rid of this person, obviously there's something about him that was bad for the community. In my opinion, venting after such an event can afford a valuable opportunity for catharsis.

That said, I'll give it a shot. You can wait and see if I get infracted, and then celebrate (or not) accordingly.

Every rumor season, one vocal crybaby pops up in the Rumor Mill and dumps baseless criticism of the new set into every thread. This time, it was raidendart. I am happy as a little girl that he's gone, and good riddance.

It's probably in bad taste. That doesn't usually stop me from being vocal about it if a particular mod action pleases me. And I've seen celebratory posts about this sort of thing around the site. Though those sorts of posts tend to draw out contrary opinions. And you have to be careful what exactly you say.

"Member_X really wasn't a great poster. He flamed, annoyed, derailed countless threads and started arguments over nothing for no good reason. I'm relieved to see him gone and I'm not going to miss him."

versus

"Member_X was a stupid little ****. I'm glad the mods put that ***** little ***** out to pasture. Now he can spend more time with his whore of a mother."

One is pretty okay, the other is blatant flaming of a member (even if said member is gone). Keep that in mind.

My thoughts are that it directly goes against the standards for manners and decency we look for on the forums. Even if the person being flamed is no longer around, it's still rude and derogatory to attack others. I ran into issues about this myself when Anna Nicole Smith died and a thread about it devolved into posters attacking her and saying some really nasty things. Personally, I feel it's unnecessary to behave that way. Even if the subject of your rotten behaviour will never read it, it's still a ****ty way to act and we expect better from our users.

So, I can't say "Ann Coulter is a ****ing moron" (with some other text) because that would be flaming?

Presumably so. At least if my understanding of the rules is correct.

Though do note that not every negative remark about an outside individual is automatically a flame. Feel free to criticize them to your heart's content. But generally, if it would be a flame to say it against someone else here, it's probably a flame to say it about them (the them here being departed users and public figures) as well.

I don't think most people would understand "flaming" to include statements about someone who's unlikely to read the post in question. Like, say, a dead person.

Which is more insulting, preventing someone from ever making another post on this site with any account ever, or saying that they're stupid?

The forum rules state that malicious attacks on other people (not members, former members, or even living people) are considered flaming. Just because the person is banned (or was never a member, or even is dead) does not mean it is OK to flame that person.

As {mikeyG} has been saying, polite criticism is fine, but flaming is not. It doesn't matter whether the person is banned, or will ever read your posts, flaming said person is not allowed.

Depends on the context. I personally wouldn't infract the use of it everytime unless it was clear it was used as an attack of some form. Because it certainly can be used as an attack, and often is.

If, hypothetically, there were moderators or admins that wanted me banned, I would be very offended at statements they made in private forums about this that I don't have access to. Because these statements, if they exist, would offend me, I demand that if any mod or admin ever makes one of these statements, that they be infracted for it.

All this makes it sound like referring to a group of Big Brother cast members as "the Idiot Squad" might be flaming.

If the percentage of mods that hate you isn't between 50% and 90%, you're doing something wrong.
