Why? To stand out from a crowd of thousands is my guess. There may only be around 500-700 really active posters here, but even still. Having a different font or color or something that distinguishes you from everyone else is a boon.
Same reason why we have avatars or a username that is different even.
Personally, I use Alpha, because its habit, I've been doing it since about 2000...on various message boards

Lies! -I'm Buffy Summers, town tracker. I used my ability on you and saw that you didn't use any abilities before the game started. My flavor is I was sucked through a mysterious space-time portal and I'm here to kill all the vampires, and my tracking ability is a combination of my Slayer and Native American skills.

If they really want to stand out of the crowd, why not do it with good, well thought out, thought provoking or funny posts? There's no need for posting your post all in red just to make yourself special.

Why do people get tattoos or dye their hair wierd colors? A lot of posters here offer good, well-thought out, funny posts, so that alone doesn't exactly make any one individual in particular stand out. Good posts (and by extension, good posters) are a dime a dozen around here. (not that this is at all a bad thing) However, when I see bright yellow text, I immediately know I'm looking at a post by votan (for example). I see a certain font and I know it's God of the Grove, a different font I know it's Senori and so on.
Good posts are nice and all, but these gimmicks as you call them are just an additional way to leave a lasting impression. Simple visual cues that can tell a reader, before even reading the post, who has written it.
Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.
Typing in bold?
Well, I sort of always did it, back even before my The Evincar account on News....Sort of because I wanted to be as annoying as possible back then, sort of to stand out, and sort of...just because, dammit!
So, I'm cool with gimmicks, posting in bold, little sign offs, whatever.

Mostly, just why not? All the reasons above are good. If a particular gimmic hurts your eyes or something, you could easily ask the person to tone it down... and if they won't, just deal with it. It's not going to kill you.
Personally, I use Times New Roman mostly because I like the look better than Verdana or whatever the normal font is. Occasionally I'll switch to Courier if I want the letters to all be the same size for something special I'm writing.
I know that the center text annoys the hell out Senori and Belgareth :D.
Trust me - they're not the only ones...
I don't personally think it's a big deal. No, I don't do it myself - I've never been interested in "standing out". (That and I'd probably just try to use a more legible font, but it probably wouldn't be on everyone's computer so there isn't much point. :slant:)
I think that there are very good reasons to allow it. Personally, I think that SorryGuy and P_P have great uses. Qwerty's use of the [CENTER] tag - even though a little annoying to me - makes it standout without being too repulsive. Are there those who abuse it? Probably. But because they stand out, I find it easier to ignore them.
In TFE's case, well... I wouldn't expect any less.
Yeah, I kinda always pictured TFE sitting there screaming at the screen too.
Perhaps I should change my font depending on what I'm doing too... um... I'm listening to music I really dont like... at work... Im in a white jump-suit... I'm working in an environment thats supposed to be 100 times cleaner then a hospital... I dont think there is a font/color/gimmick for that.

When I down a fairy you know I'm only getting started mother f***er.
As long as it doesn't hurt the eyes or is annoying to read (like those big red "No"s), I think it's fine to use whatever style you want. But maybe that's just the Dim Gray talking...:p

I don't understand the purpose of gimmick accounts.
Why did scribes in the medieval ages draw fancy pictures around the first letter of a word in the beginning paragraph of a chapter in a book they were transcribing?
Typing in white should be a bannable offense.... tailoring your posts to work with a forum skin that's used by three people worldwide is a grievous sin, not to mention too much work for the rest of us to read.

I post in silver myself because it looks good in night and it is readable (if not amazing) in night and default)

1) They can
2) It looks good
3) They won't get confused with the other few thousand posters.

I agree with senori, often a brek from the norm just looks nicer

Even though I use little formatting (only the occasional bold/italic for emphasis), I don't see harm coming from it. Let it go, man.
And hey, you have a signature. Why do you use it? Angry faces can upset some people, you know.
