Hello, fellow Black mages. Sorry for my absence but the end of the semester was truly gruesome. Had to work on graveyard shifts and had to start choosing a grad school to attend (plus some health issues). Everything is more or less settled now and I'm happy to see many familiar faces in the new thread. How's everyone doing? I'm looking forward to playing Magic more frequently again.
As a side note: DotP '14 is on sale on Steam but I noticed that it seems to be vastly inferior than '13 and '12. Should I bother buying it?
I ran Pox of course, and with a play set of the namesake card
I beat burn, ANT and Junk. You can tell the format is extremely diverse when there's a burn deck, a combo deck, an aggro-control, and a control deck.
No, I still have a final next week
That's awesome. I still somewhat far away to finish my Pox but I always like to see it played :). From all the combo decks I've played in Legacy, ANT is probably my least liked one, so you beating it is even more awesome.
Good luck with your final. I dodged a bullet during my last final this semester and now I'm free to play some Magic, hopefully you can do the same
Wooh!!! POX!!! Anyway, congratulations on your victories. I have finals later this week and next week, not looking forward to one of them, but the others should be ok.

ANT is a cakewalk when 80% of the non-lands are discard. I can literally recite the order of the spells I played in Game 2 against ANT: IoK, duress, funeral charm, duress, raven's crime, liliana, opponent scoops
Well my local LGS is running a legacy tournament next weekend, so I'll probably be able to make it since finals will be over in two days :D:D:D

Hopefully neither of them is on Optics Best of luck to you too.
By the way guys, I didn't draft nor opened any packs from DGM, M14 or Theros. Should I bother with any of them? Is it possible to run a budget mono black devotion list? I'm finishing a rework of my Modern deck and would like to brew something different for a bit (I will either try T2 or finish my Drana EDH).
@Darth, that looks like a normal day in the office for my Modern deck (except -Duress +Wrench Mind). It's such a pleasure to disrupt a combo so hard as we black mages can do
Hopefully neither of them is on Optics Best of luck to you too.

DGM by itself is unremarkable except if you open a shockland. If you want to draft, it's probably with RTR and GTC, so the chances of opening shocks are decent. The format of DGM/GTC/RTR is...okay. Signals are weird. If you just open packs, I'd give DGM a C+. If you draft, its B-.
M14 is terrible unless you open a mutavault. Pack opening: F. Drafting: D+
Theros currently has value because its the latest set and most of what you need for mono-black devotion comes from Theros. On the other hand, the singles you need are not difficult to acquire. Drafting is fun initially, but the depth of the format isn't too deep imho. Pack opening: B- Drafting: B-
If you absolutely must crack packs or draft, I'd go with Theros.

Thanks for the explanation. I won't be drafting until Born of the Gods prerelease but I think I will crack some packs because I still need to complete my Thoughtseize playset (missing one), so I guess I will be sticking with some Theros fat packs for myself then.
On a sidenote, I intend to play PTQ Season 3 (the one leading to Hawaii) and the format will be Modern. I will finish my decklist (playing MonoBlack) and will post here for some criticism. I know it's quite likely not PT-worthy but at least I would like to know if I have a shot to at least don't lose all games
None of my finals are on optics, luckily. About a "budget" (*cough* *cough*, budget for me since I had the expensive cards) mono-black devotion list, I have put this list together, but I haven't had time to test it yet:

It has done well in goldfishing and I cannot wait until finals are over so I can test it at an fnm.
That looks quite good. Well, I will have Optics next semester and I'm not particularly cheerful about it.
I was quite surprised to see Pack Rat. I honestly thought it was a mediocre rare but it has proven me wrong. I will try to make one list based on yours, chili. I own most of it also so it shouldn't be expensive. Thanks for the list No Desecration Demon makes me happy (I traded my playset some time ago)

Really? It was a limited bomb when RTR was first released. I think its a skill tester: a card that becomes better as the player becomes better, the same way fact or fiction and necropotence get better in the right hands.
The main reason pack rat is there is because mid to lategame, it makes otherwise bad topdecks such as cackler and unneeded lands into (better) threats, and is pretty potent with underworld connections. Also, it should be noted that mutavaults counts as rats, so you can if you need to inflict more damage tap mutavault to turn itself into a creature, which will boost all your pack rats in play. So there is lots of "tricks" in this deck. Also, the ability of pack rat is not sorcery speed, so it can be played on the declare blockers step. Long story short, pack rat is awesome.
Color me wrong I must say. I proxied Chili's list and it seems pretty good. The rats do some nasty work indeed. Think I will buy me some cards in January Thanks for the list, Chili.
Also I wish you guys a happy New Year and all the best. May our black magic infest many tables across the world
Happy new year from me too. Though the saying always bothered me. Seriously, we say that the new year is a happy one before even trying it out, it might be a crappy new year for all we know...
@Darth Bunny, if you can influence the politicians, can you not try to make "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu and "The Prince" by Niccolò Machiavelli mandatory reading, it might turn more people to the dark side while giving them some useful knowledge.

Alright, I understand I have not been the most active lately. When on a nice vacation to Texas when my friend moved there and then the holdiays and stuff. Speaking of which, I hope everyone had good holidays. But now that they are over and its a new year, lets get this going!
But its time we get this clan active again. I'm not the only one one who hasn't been around. I'll be sending a mass PM to members who haven't posted a lot.
Any Doctor Who fans in here? Reason I ask is, I built a Doctor Who themed EDH deck and I'd love to share it, but if no one here is a fan, it might not make too much sense since some choices aren't exactly optimal so I can make a flavorful deck. That said, my EDH crew is now flooded with new players, so less then optimal is still brutally powerful.
As for Waste Not, probably not. All I play is EDH anymore, with the occasional Modern, and I'm not sure any of my EDH decks focus enough of discard to make it worthwhile. In fact, I am positive. As for Modern though, I have been tossing some ideas around for it. Kudos for its flavor text though. I do enjoy the community getting recognition.
@Darth Bunny, Maybe I should try it as a 2.of in a discard heavy pox list, but I feel like it got the same problem Megrim and Liliana's Caress.
It probably won't go into my pox deck. Actually, these new frames make me glad Waste Not won. I was upset the oversold cemetery triggered on life loss didn't make it, but any card on these new frames would be an eye sore.

Don't watch, although I have a classmate who's crazy about it. Weeping Angels sound like awesome villains.

The new frames don't bother me all that much. They kind of makes the rest of the cards look like the planeswalker frames. We'll have to see if they change those too or just leave them be.

They would. At one point, I figured out what they would be some sort of cool angel statue card that would flip into some really fast black creature then flip back again.
My deck is based on Melek, Izzet Paragon. Something is so appealing about playing Time Stretch like 8 times for a grand total of 4 mana. I did discover how powerful Parallel Thoughts can be, especially with Thought Reflection and Jace, The Mind Sculptor. THen you recycle it and draw it all an unnecessary amount of times. Win by taking a belligerent amount of turns, drawing a ton of cards, and killing with Psychosis Crawler, or sparking an infinite mana combo and burning the table, or with my secret gem, Laboratory Maniac.
