[/B][/COLOR]Lucky. Growing up in Utah I saw it all. Shunned left and right for a lack of belief. Been forced to participate in a prayer because "it was good for me." Worked a job for nine years where I could have been fired for a lack of belief...though that was more my fault for working at a scout camp. I saw friends and coworkers scared to ask questions of their faith, fathers and mothers disowning their children because of faith...I've lost friends and girlfriends because I wasn't willing to convert, and I even had several good friends, once having a resurgence of faith, decide that I was too much of a corrupting influence to be around.
You know the kicker? They can't understand why I'm a good person...at least the ones who stick around to get to know me. Sometimes I'm even asked why I don't break all the rules, sin like crazy....sleep around, enjoy a life of drugs and debauchery. As if I need a set of rules and fear of god for decent behavior. The only way they could reconcile my behavior, and they've told me this, is that I "must" believe in God...I just don't know it. They have to justify this, or else they can't be my friend.
I'm glad I no longer live in Utah.
I suppose a disclaimer is in order. I have friends who I consider are near perfect examples of what a human should be. These few individuals are also devoutly religious. Without those examples I imaging I would be quite bitter from living in Utah. Instead I just witnessed the extremes, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Cheers,
Daggertooth
Man, that's tough.
I grew up (and still growing) in a fairly normal area, we have a left wing part dominating the polls in the area and there isn't a lot of persecution as far as religious beliefs go. I consider myself and agnostic, but I have been verging on atheism lately.
The only persecution I have ever gotten was while not forming my hands during a prayer, a teacher scolded me and told me to "respect the lord's prayer". My mom also told me to not be ridiculous when I stated that I was an agnostic.
My town isn't a pain to live in, but I can't say I'm really happy here. Definitely planning on leaving to go to University (where I will go I still am unsure).
I also am a person who I guess would be considered "good" as I generally follow the law and the only "immoral" thing that I do is occasionally smoke (cigars, tobacco pipes) which is actually legal for someone at least sixteen years of age in Canada (just so I don't get infracted or anything)...
I consider myself and agnostic, but I have been verging on atheism lately.
Come all the way over to the dark side. We have cookies!
Grew up in a fairly normal and open-minded household. Sure I went to church when I was very small but as I grew up I realized that I just didn't believe in the "invisible man living in the sky" to borrow a phrase from Carlin. The only trouble my atheism got me into was with one of my cousins. Way back when the blogs here on Salvation first sprang into being I started writing weekly about my thoughts on the world. Naturally religion was a big theme. Let it slip that I was sympathetic to atheists in a conversation with the youngest cousin I have in the religious part of my family. Got an earful. Other than that nothing. Mostly the conversations have been making fun of my desire to go into theatre.:p
Speaking of which, director man doesn't know what he's doing. Play takes place in a basement and he's got stage lights at full. There's a part of the play where there's just a video playing for 5 minutes and the characters are doing nothing. Keeps bringing the action to a halt in order to give notes, during tech week. Shrugs off the mispronunciation of Italian words. Mysterious force that enters during climax is represented by a weird video that starts with Darth Maul. I love the guy and he's been a close friend and my best ally in breaking into Denver theatre, but he can't direct to save his life. This show is gonna suck.:ria:

Also, spending $2 grand to get your transmission fixed sucks. Having to spend another 600 because the problem 'wasn't what they originally thought' sucks even more.

Been reading a lot of H.P. Lovecraft-inspired short story collections, & although I've read it before, I just got through Neil Gaiman's A Study in Emerald; perfect pastiche <3
Also reading Catch 22, which lives up to its promise & then some.
Otherwise, just . . . busy. Never experienced religious persecution, fortunately.
I've heard alot about Catch 22 and Brave New World, are they worthwhile reads?
Those books are certainly worthy of literary merit, even though they may or may not be enjoyable to read. (I havent read them) They were both optional readings for my university course, so that at least assures that they aren't chaff.
Life is really up-and-down. I have to see a counsellor because apparently I have anxiety, which sucks. On the other hand I may have a date, so it evens out. :/
Brave New World is weird, & depressing. Good though, if you're into dystopian novels. Which I am,
Catch 22. . . deals with the horrors of war, but. . . in a very absurd manner. The narrative structure is pretty loose, which plays to its themes well. It's just a darn funny & sexy book.
I ain't read Catch 22 but I've read Brave New World. It's a great book.
If you're into weird dystopian novels, Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut is worth a read, too.
Went 2-3 at FNM last night, pretty depressing. Lost in a mirror to a guy who had a much better build than I did (i.e. he had GSZ and I didn't, also a single Batterskull which was so good), a Tezzeret deck that I drew no removal against, and Delver, which I also drew no removal against and he drew four (!!!) Vapor Snag. Oh well.
I used to really love reading back when I was 13, then I guess life just took over a lot of the time that I spent reading with doing other things...
I do still read however, I just finished The Hobbit in anticipation for the film coming out in December, and I read the Lord of the Rings during the summer.
I am contemplating whether I should start the Eye of the World series or not, maybe A Song of Fire and Ice? Black Company?
I really only read fantasy as of late, but I did read Nineteen Eighty-Four during school, which I always see being compared to Brave New World...

This is only tangently related to reading, but has anyone ehre gotten their hand son an iPad? I keep staring at them when I end up in a store, but I don't want to spend all of that cash on a tablet only to find out that not enough books are in digital form or that they are terrible to read on one.
I simply have ran out of physical space to store books. I either need to upgrade my living quarters in the near future or buy a digital reader.
kp got one for Xmas, & I recently ran a class at the library on 'em. Preeetty fun v3 is coming out shortly, though, so hang tough – you'll get MOA MOA or OLD CHEEP, y'know?
We have a Nook from Barnes and Noble. I think the newest version is something like $200 and it's excellent for books. It does some of the things that the iPad does but just not as robust. It's easy to use and the wifi is very good. Affordable, stores a lot of books, and is Angry Birds downloadable.
We really like it. Smaller than an iPad and far less expensive. The thing I hate about iPad in particular, is that they come out with a new version every year. That's $600-$900 a year if you want to keep up.

Hey all, life is all sorts of hecktic here. Research paper has slowed to a crawl while I try to fit that in with my random work. Still working on the website and GIS data, kind of all crunch time as I need to have everything done yesterday.
Got stalled up something awful by my mom's school. She's working on an online PhD program and had to write a paper. Well I'm typically the one who corrects her English so I've helped her a bit here. Problem was, the paper was rejected three times. First two was because of the topic, needed to be more specific. Third I was too busy to work on, so my youngest brother reviewed that one...that was rejected with the statement "at this level of education, your grammar is expected to be much better". Three rejections really demoralized my mom so that she's been talking about quitting...after spending around $30,000 and two years on the program.
To me that signaled the need for some sort of intervention. So I stopped everything I was doing and spent the last three days focusing on helping her out. Well I read the purpose of the paper and discovered that it was not just any kind of paper, but a full blown thesis proposal! Worse, after my mom edited the paper several times (with advice from several people), it lost a lot of content...mainly the actual purpose. Instead, it was nothing but random sentences followed by citations...no flow or cohesiveness what so ever. So I spent the last three days typing up a full blown PhD thesis proposal....standard scientific style including designing her experiment. Heh, I even added a few experiments for good measure.
What else? oh, e-books. Evil little things. I have yet to warm up to them, but then last year more e-books were sold than the traditional paper.
I argue that they are bad for the environment. Whenever I say that though people correct me, thinking I misspoke. But its one of those things that those who don't know what they're talking about love to turn into a buzz word. "I care about the environment so I use an I-pad." Bull... I'll have to go on an elaborate explanation on of these days explaining why it's bad for the environment. Slightly counter intuitive I suppose.
Cheers,
Daggertooth

I also haven't really warmed up to e-books yet either. I just don't feel they're really worth the price for something not physical, and actually the feeling seems lost. I like the look of a book collection on a bookshelf, something that just isn't there when you read e-books. On the other hand e-books do have their advantages like being damage proof and being easier to store I guess.
In other news, that girl I was interested in recently broke up with the other guy and we started to talk again. Things are going well...

The only advantage I see for the device is that it consolidates a book collection into an easily manageable form. Now for some people this might not be that big a deal, considering that I, too, enjoy a nice full bookshelf. However, I'm still in the "everything I own needs to fit in my car" phase of life and I can't afford a mini-book shelf in my car.
That said, I actually have a mini bookshelf in my car. I own a nation wide road map and state road maps for about 8 states. I own hiking guide books for about 5 states. I have a comprehensive plant identification book for the western united states as well as five smaller tomes on edible and medicinal plants. I have a comprehensive identification book on mushrooms and it's partnered field guide. I also have three huge books on cooking Barbeque. That all takes up more room than you might realize. The idea of compiling all that into one tablet does strike me as convenient.
Speaking of edible plants. I went to a great talk today on that topic. Was by Brian A. Elliot, the author of a relatively new book called, the "Handbook of edible and poisonous plants of western North America." (I ended up buying the book, I'll critique it later.) Covered some real interesting stuff that I hadn't considered before. Like how some plants become toxic after frost, while others will become edible after frost. He even mentioned that "into the wild" guy. Apparently that guy had been eating the roots of a plant that was completely edible. But, as the season went from spring to fall, he changed from eating roots to seeds and flowers. Well the seeds and flowers happened to have a toxin that caused the wasting disease that eventually killed him. If he had just stuck with the roots of that same plant instead, he'd still be alive.
I had heard he died because he "misidentified" a plant...turns out he kinda didn't.
Cheers,
Daggertooth

Just sayin...learned a lot from you. Like how good Yoohoo's taste and that you can cook bacon and eggs in the microwave. Still, I think you should have gone to Mammoth Cave with me. Found a great little diner in the middle of nowhere while on the way there. Spruced up with RC cola paraphernalia and introduced me to the novelty of hominy. Good eatin I'll tell you what.
Financial situation fixed for an extra month. I entered a scholarship that a friend on facebook linked to me. It was a writing contest on the topic of "the future of online education." Turns out that despite two glaring typo's I was voted the winner. Two typos that I kinda think should have disqualified me. I mean they are bad...thats what I get for typing that up at 2am.
