So Last night on Cockatrice I played against a guy, or girl (mysteries of the netspace), who sort of blew me away with the silliness/genius of their deck. I'm new to EDH and this is the first time I've encountered something like this, but maybe it's common, though it seemed to go against all logic. Their deck was helmed by Progenitus, but that didn't even matter, and was comprised of many many cards, mostly lands, that generated 1/1 tokens, then they drew Mass Polymorph (I'm still not sure how they could ensure they'd draw it, maybe I missed a tutor or something) and proceeded to replace the tokens with the only 6 creatures they had in their deck, all heavy hitters, but most importantly Gisela, Blade of Goldnight and Maelstrom Wanderer then beat me to death in one turn.
I was stupefied and impressed. Just wanted to know how common that was in EDH.
The other thing, Maelstrom Wanderer isn't really a card that wants Polymorph or T&N, and neither really is Gisela. I would think more along the lines of Blightsteel Colossus + maybe an Urabrask.
Sounds like pretty typical ramp into beater + random utility. So on the spectrum between "creatively unique" and "competitive archetype", it's probably about in the middle. I wouldn't apply either term to it.
Some of the wonder that stems from the commander format lies in the sheer wackyness and raw creativity a magic player can wield when they build a brew that smashes face out of the blue.
Judging from what you said it doesn't sound overly consistent or competitive, not enough to garner a name in the meta. I'll build it on cockatrice, sounds like a blast to play!

I once met a man from Seattle

Could have been part of a Warp World Combo deck. Mass Polymorph wouldn't be terrible with that.
There used to be a standard deck that did what you're describing. Zero creatures apart from a few fatties, and See Beyond to shuffles ones from your hand back into the deck. You could actually throw in any big creature you wanted. You wouldn't need the mana for them, since you would never cast them from your hand.
Polymorph.dec is usually what it's called. It's most commonly played with cards that tutor the poly and manlands and non-creature token generators. Bitterblossom, Lingering Souls, Dragon Fodder, etc. Then the deck is filled with huge beaters. As someone else pointed out, Warp World is a similar deck that runs mass poly as an alt wincon.
Another variation that has dissimilar composition, but similar game plan is Cascade. It plays Maelstrom Wanderer as a general and the deck is comprised of just 100% beater threats (or overpowering instants) at 6 or 7 cmc. Another variant on that deck is 97% lands, and then just boundless realms and avenger of zendikar. You preferably want avenger of zendikar to resolve first, but if it doesn't, you still have a ton of tokens. Fetchland and swing for win in 1v1.
If you want a big effect, there's Mass Polymorph. Then there's always Polymorph and Proteus Staff. Not sure if there's anymore of such effects, but basically from there the deck kinda builds itself, I guess.
I have never seen a deck specifically like this but it is kinda cool! Gotta love those rogue decks. But especially in a 5 color deck, this wouldnt be hard to pull off with demonic tutor, vampiric tutor, personal tutor, mystical tutor, etc.
I really like the idea. I run a lands deck that primarily focuses on tokens and key creatures, of which i run around 10. Polymorph effects are a neat addition.
My Talrand deck currently runs Polymorph, Mass Polymorph and Proteus Staff with ways to hunt them out, and a creature package of Blightsteel Colossus, Consecrated Sphinx, Guile, Jin-Gitaxias, Tidespout Tyrant and Ulamog. I like it a lot.

This is why I started playing magic in the first place. It wasn't PT aspirations just making noobs cry by doing things that are perfectly fair.
The 5-color Mass Polymorph deck is real. Someone at my LGS has one, and he just tutors for the Mass Polymorph every game. I'm not sure if I hate this deck more than his Norin the Wary deck or not, but he's quickly becoming one of the people I'd rather not play with.
I am kind of amazed at [...] the fact that somebody on this thread called Mind's Eye, Mirari's Wake, Decree of Pain, Desertion, AND Scroll Rack, all before they were officially spoiled. I will edit this post VERY shortly with the username of this user who deserves at least all of the cookies. Probably more cookies than that.

You didn't remember a tutor, and I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't any. The polymorphs are two cards which are rarely bad in a certain deck. They are also basically interchange able with Tooth and Nail, Defense of the Heart, and Pattern of Rebirth. The lands that make tokens (Kher Keep, Kjeldoran Outpost, Moorland Haunt and Vitu-Ghazi, the City Tree) are all fairly decent by themselves as well.
The other thing, Maelstrom Wanderer isn't really a card that wants Polymorph or T&N, and neither really is Gisela. I would think more along the lines of Blightsteel Colossus + maybe an Urabrask.
