Just came from the very best shop in my town. I asked the manager what he could tell me about Commander's Arsenal, and he said (paraphrasing here I didnt write it down) "we will be getting very few, and will be charging at least $250, if not more."
I ask how many is very few. He says four, and two of them are already pre-sold.
I tell him if I actually buy one (not likely) I would feel silly opening it. He says "it would almost be a shame to do so. In a few years they will be worth a lot of money."
Why is Wizards so keen to make **** like this? I bought FTV: Realms because it was cheaper than purchasing all the cards in the set separately. This on the other hand will most likely be three times as much as whatever the original cards are worth. WTF WotC!?!?!?!???!
A friend of mine (and one of the pre-sales I might add) told me Wizards does this sort of thing as a thank you to their retail shops, because they can mark them up huge and make some cash. While I appreciate the sentiment, I also dislike that 95% of players will never have this set available to them.
Anybody else have a similar/different experience or opinion?
Wizards is making the Commander's Arsenal for several reasons....
...To give something to serious Magic collectors who enjoy shiny stuff.
...To raise hype and keep it up for Commander/EDH until the Commander product next year.
...To reward brick and mortar stores in the same way as the From the Vault releases.
...To make money.
...To make you cry.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. I certainly am not going to be splurging upwards of 250 dollars on a bunch of stupid foils; I prefer being able to actually buy cards I need for my decks.

The wedding is over. Now it's time for the honeymoon.
these sorts of cards are the reason why people try to become judges just so they can sell the foils. I know for a fact all four of the arsenals at my local shop will be resold on ebay within the next couple years. I really feel like they do this stuff because after Hasbro bought magic they wanted to monetize it as much as possible.
I disagree with adding money to a game just for money's sake.
thing is though that the mrsp was at $75, that is what wizards is suggesting, how ever due to the supply and demand of CA, stores are finding that people will still buy it at a higher price ($250). if wizards were to distribute more copies (which i doubt but still hope) then the price of CA will go down. everything is based on supply and demand (black lotus is $3000 and basic lands are 10 cents)
Thank you for explaining supply and demand, I too took micro economics in college. I'm not asking why this is happening, more saying this is a bunch of BS. Commander started as a casual format, then stores (and wizards) saw people were buying old cards way out of standard and not typically used in the other formats. From there we have seen a gradual but continuall increase in singles prices for commander. Now the 'must have' commander toy is gonna be $250 (or more!). I'm sick of seeing people priced out of their hobby.
this is ridiculous...just buy the cards you need, unless you really, really want that foil Sylvan Library...
for that amount of money, i can get myself a Mana Drain and a Juzam Djinn...

Thread closed. Sorry but the cost of a future collector set has nothing to do with Commander as a whole. I understand that it is intended for commander but the price and availability of it hardly are something that needs to be discussed here. -ISB

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
