I'm still considering whether I should attend AVR Games Day this coming weekend. I'm not gonna even talk about Latch Seeker 'cos I don't really think I'll use it in EDH, so that leaves Killing Wave as possibly my only source of motivation.
So...is Killing Wave any good in EDH? To me it looks like a bad card because it boils down to the "letting opponent choose" argument, but I thought I'd ask the opinions of everyone here?
Killing Wave would only see play in newly established decks. Black Sun's Zenith is far superior. Are you trying to make your opponent lose life? They always have the choice not to. Any benefit you get from it is rather hard and basically involves trying to outwit your opponents. Most importantly, it won't kill what you really want dead.

Exactly this.
Killing wave takes your choice out of the equation and gives it to your opponent. If they have a token army, they probably have the means to make it again, and thats the one time killing wave feels strong, but if thats your aim, then just use the aforementioned black sun's zenith or any black wrath effects.
Giving your opponent the power to say what you can and cannot kill makes a board wiper pointless in my eyes
I have a punisher-style deck that this fits perfectly in (themes are an important part to most of my deck construction), but other than that, I'm not a fan.
On the other hand, you could read the card as such:
Killing Wave
Sorcery
Each player may sacrifice any number of creatures.
This puts a very different spin on the card. And while still far from a staple (there are MUCH better sac outlets), it has its use.
^This. I can't even begin to state how furious I am at the design of this card. They want to make another sweeper for B...but they troll us by giving it Browbeat-syndrome.
I was just thinking about this game while looking at my Harvester of Souls. I think they work well together [if you have the kinda deck that will use both well--Endrek?].
EDIT: I'm also gonna say I like the regular art more than the promo's.

Also blood artist, falkenrah aristocrat, or diregraf captain can make the card very good. Especially if you have an army of tokens out you can do a lot of damage without having to attack.
Killing wave is flat out amazing in limited they couldn't make it better without it just dominating that format. (It won me 3/4 matches when I got it in a sealed event)
Way better than people give it credit for in standard, in the right deck it is great.
but I think EDH it isn't good enough... 40 life is too much even with all the mana you have.
Not unless you always have infinite mana (or just 40+) up to make it a board wipe everytime. or you are playing against a token deck that for somereason needs all its tokens.
it has the strange card in that you only want it in one specific situation in a game. one where you had a lot of early damage beat your opponent down and now they have stabilized and have blocker and setting their side for a win. you use it to switch the momentum back to you and since you have more HP you can afford to pay and they can't. although you can argue a Burn spell is better in that situation where you can snatch a win out of a stalemate against a deck with a better late game.
I could see some amusing shenanigans with it and Tainted Sigil and Exquisite Blood. Along with the obvious tricks with Wound Reflection. Give them the illusion of choice when really they're just damned if they do damned if they don't. Other wise though better sweepers exist, but it works as a good budget sweeper clocking in at $1.50 currently each.
