I play edh very cutthroat, so don't get me wrong, there are only two more cards I'd like to see banned. One being Consecrated Sphinx and the other Mana Crypt.
Now Mana Crypt is a huge monetary investment for most magic players, and since the rules council wont ever ban the card outright I wanted to ask the community if they'd try playing with a little more "spirit of edh" in mind. With the Will of the Council mechanic from conspiracy, this is my take on tempering the brutality of this card.
Mana Crypt 0
Artifact
Doesn't untap during your untap step.
At the beginning of your upkeep, starting with you, each player votes Closed or Open. If closed gets the most votes, tap Mana Crypt. If Open gets more votes or is tied for most votes, untap Mana Crypt and it deals 3 damage to you. T: Add 2 to your mana pool.
I don't see a reason why anyone would ever vote to let you have the mana. If they just always vote for "closed," you just played a Darksteel Relic that's not even indestructible.
I think voting on the damage would be more interesting. Of course, everyone would just vote to bolt you, but it is closer in function to the original card than adding an untap mechanic.
It would be more interesting if "If open wins, each player may add 2 colorless mana to their mana pool during their precombat mainphase until your next turn"
They already made that card... its called Darksteel Relic. Except Darksteel Relic is strictly better because it is Indestructible.
All joking aside, nobody would play that card and nobody would ever let that person untap that card. It would basically be a colorless Dark Ritual at that point; not my idea of a good time.
I mean, the card would still be playable as a colorless kind of dark ritual...
It would be like Mana Vault I guess.
If you really want to punish Mana Crypt players, just invoke the will of the council in a better way. Gang up on them to kill them. Why errata the card when you could just house ban it anyways? The errata you're suggesting also strikes me as not very good design, for reasons that DTrain mentioned.
