This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, MTGCast #109 - MTG Girl!. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
I'm busy listening to the Elaine Chase interview, so I'll get to the 'cast after that.
How cool would it be if a pizza van pulls up to your FNM magic venue and drops a box with Eventide cards. Damn.
Blowfly Infestation is really cool, but in my opinion Somnomancer is ten times cooler in draft.
She is legendary... well, not really but you know what I mean.
I think, if you are going to make a -1/-1 counter deck, you'll play Torture, Grim Poppet and Dusk Urchins to abuse the counters to their full potential.
On the Invitational card, I've thought about this for so long now, it is one of those things I would love to be able to do.
I was in a car accident with two of my buddies last year, who didn't make it.
They had complete contrasting play styles, one was a red mage and the other was the typical blue control player.
I would love to immortalize them on a magic card.
I love the idea of creatures with spell abilities tacked on to them, a la Mystic Snake.
I would make a red/blue creature, with a comes into play ability and a leaves play ability, like:
Dual MagesUR
Creature - Human Soldier Wizard
When ~ comes into play, it deals 2 damage
to target creature or player.
When ~ leaves play, draw a card.

I do apologize for my overwhelming ignorance of the pro tourney scene on most days.
I like the Blowfly deck (and fantastic deck title BTW) and is very similar to decklist I am running now. The only real difference is that I was trying to run atleast some Scarscale Ritual for card draw, and the deck is a blast to play!

Yeah, I wondered about that. I decided not because it seemed like it wouldn't actually have all that much synergy. Put a counter on a Wither creature and you've reduced its Wither damage by one, which is bad. Unless the Ritual kills it outright and triggers Infestation, but then that's a 2-for-2, which isn't really card drawing at all (some of what you draw will be land).
I suppose it would be possible to add good card draw, but the danger with adding good off-theme cards is that the deck ceases to be about the Infestation and you just head towards U/B Control!
(Feel free to steal the deck name even if you don't use the build.)

Just wanted to input about the -1/-1 counter thing... It counts all creatures.
Even yours.
So, if you like wanted to kill your cinderhaze wretch after having your opponent discard two cards, you could... and get to put a -1/-1 counter somewhere.
*Will add more later*
I don't think GregC searched ALL those strings in the Orb of Insight... he's just the guy in charge of compiling everyone else's.
Re: Mana cost - only what's in the top right (or left :/) corner of the card. Abilities have costs that require mana, additional costs may require mana, but "mana cost" is specifically the top right corner.
Re: Chroma being developed because of Phosphorescent Feast - I think Chroma was already developed/in development when Future Sight was release (i.e. they were already working on Eventide in the process)... I know MaRo said that some of the Futureshifted cards were sort of a "We'll gauge the community's reaction and see if we should print cards like that from there", but AFAIK, no one really liked Phosphorescent Feast. At least, no one in my area made a casual deck with it.
Re: Slow trickle of Spoilers - I agree with Derek. I like to check out each card individually and think about how it could be used... and when blocks of cards are all spoiled at the same time, I overlook half of them.

If I won the world championships I'd definitely try as hard as possible to convince Wizards that Trollish Knight is the best card ever. I've had this one tucked away since Ravnica, it's always been the card I'm most proud of creating.
Trollish Knight
{R/G}{W/B}
Creature - Troll Knight [R]
{R/W}: Trollish Knight gains first strike until end of turn.
{G/B}: Regenerate Trollish Knight.
2/2
If you wanted to turn that into an advantage, drop ritual on a poppet.
Poppet is clearly made of awesome in terms of its interactions with the deck, but a seven mana creature in Constructed seems like it's asking for trouble!
If the aim was to be completely Casual rather than just Rogue I'd be more inclined to run Poppet and Gnarled Effigy and slow stuff like that... but I got the impression Tom was hoping for at least some outside chance against serious decks!

On the SoA prerelease changes, I have really mixed feelings. From what I've seen so far, the organizer for the "big" prereleases is now just cut right out of the equation. He's got other tourneys he can run, I'm sure, but it looks as though they've just decided to ignore his experience running tourneys and acquiring new players (we'd easily go through 2 pads of new DCI cards at any given prerelease).
Going to a large prerelease really made me feel like a part of a much larger community. Seeing 500+ players all learning the new mechanics, and helping them learn and play better was always a ton of fun. The low synchronous rumble of hundreds of dice rolled at the words "you may begin" has long been one of my favorite sounds in a Magic tournament.
I guess the upside is that I'll avoid the 5 hours of round-trip driving, but it's turned into a tradition that we print out the spoiler Friday night, stay up playing until 3 am anyway, get up at 7 am and drive down with a carload of gamers, passing around the spoiler, making up stupid combos with cards we've never seen, and catching up on sleep.
Now, though, the scale will be smaller, and I'm not sure how it will affect our turnout for the release weekend. We've been hitting close to 50 players for the launch parties thus far, and I'd expect this to drop off somewhat. The prerelease dates will, of course, be significantly larger for our store, maybe as many as 100 players? We'll need some more people to manage a tourney that size. I hear there's an organizer that might need some work...
But enough of that...
While you didn't specify a tournament format for Blowfly Infestation decks, I'll assume it's Standard:

Since they were talking about Tom playing in a PTQ (I think), you should probably stick to LOR-SHM Block Constructed.
Quick hits:
MTG Girl -- I have to keep that in my memory in case the comment contest topic is ever "Best MTGCast moments" again.
Chroma -- the two cards released so far aren't very exciting to me. I'm glad it's only a five card cycle. Still, one of the three remaining cards could be cool.
Prereleases -- it sounds like it will just be two weeks of Launch parties and no more big fun tournaments but we'll see how it shakes out.
Blowfly Infestation -- Tom, it seems like this card could get out of hand. Do you ever have trouble with it wiping your board out as well?
+1/+1 counters -- I think the contrast is +1/+1 for Lorwyn block and -1/-1 for Shadowmoor block so I don't expect any +1/+1 counters in Eventide. I think WotC wants to keep +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters out of the same Limited format though they fudged that a bit in Time Spiral with a few timeshifted cards.
Orb -- you guys didn't mention that it has confirmed the enemy dual lands, which I think is one of the biggest finds so far.
Missing spoilers -- if you use the MTGSalvation spoiler address like this: http://mtgsalvation.com/eventide-spoiler.html#2588 and replace 2588 at the end with 2587, 2586, etc you can step back in time through each update to the spoiler. It's a good way to check that you haven't missed any updates.
Making cards -- you get to design a card when you win the Magic Invitational, not the World Championship!
Great voice mail, can someone make an mp3 with just that call?
My invitational card would be this:
Supreme Heretic 2UW
Creature - Human Advisor
As ~ comes into play choose a creature type. Remove from the game all creatures of the chosen type and one put 1/1 illusion tokens into place for each creature removed this way.
When ~ leaves play, each player sacrifices all illusion tokens he or she controls. Then return the creatures removed with ~ to play.
1/1 Dragons?! Stop day-dreaming, of course they don't exist.
Hey, I just wanted to thank Tom! I got the Treasure Trove in the mail the other day and my wife opened it for me and said, "I don't know what it is, but it's some blue card in a foreign language. I don't even know what language it's in." LOL It was SO funny!
Card I would design...
I've always been partial to Spellshapers. Let's see:
Sic Dela, the World Destroyer 2UB
Legendary Creature-Human Spellshaper BB,t, discard a card: Put 3 -1/-1 counters on target creature. UU,q,: Draw a card.
2/3
Oh yea, he seems really powerful (okay, he is) but would be constructed worthy? I like it because it has a way to replenish "spells" unlike any other Spellshaper. And it's nice because it fits with Shadowmoor's mechanics.
not that impressed with the croma mechanic unless the red one has to do with all red mana symbols in you deck HAHAHA. ID buy that for a dollar.
Also I need help from other people who know what I am talking about.
If I won worlds I would want to make garth one-eye into a planeswalker card, I just dont know what his abilities would be
He would definitly be GWU, as that was the colors he used the most in the book. people please post Ideas for him as a planeswalker in the usual +-- system of today's planeswalker format.
maybe something like
starting loalty- 3
+2 look at target opponents hand
-1 name a card, you have protection from that card until end of turn
-5 put a 6/4 Craw Wurm creature token into play
I personally think that encapsules Garths fighting style and captures each colors theme
...and I finally make my way to the forums.
wonderful podcast as always, guys. listening everyweek has provided laughs as well as insight during a time when I should really be working. you guys keep me sane some days, seriously.
a card I would design if I won worlds:
name: Genocidic Homicide
casting cost :/b /b /3
destroy target creature. procede to go through target opponents library and remove all cards that share a type with it from the game.

Thanks, Heroes of The Planes! You guys are great!
Actual Truth:
"You heard it here folks:
Anyone who disagrees with "Jack from NC" is an idiot."-The Dead Weatherman
Wall of Roots helps for mana accel and slowing aggro decks, while also being a great source for counters for Leech Bonder and Flourishing Defenses. I tried fitting 3-4 Tattermunge Maniac in for some earlier plays, but that would take away from some of the -1/-1 counter tech, which I didn't have the heart to do.
Thanks for the show guys, and if you're reading this Gavin I hope your date went well - what's the lucky lady's name? Speaking of ladies, mtg-girl was hilarious; you should try and organise her to do her very own show on the mtcast network! It'll be just like the naked news, except audio only and about magic the gathering.
I strongly agree with Derek about mtgo3, I've just reinstalled it this week and I don't care in the slightest about the updated "prettier" interface, I just wish it was more stable and had the same gameplay features it had in 2.5.
Onto the contest - a friend of mine made a mildly succesful combo deck with Flourishing Defences, but it's fairly vulnerable to wrath effects and naturalize effects. I'd like to try a monoblack control angle with it, putting Scarscale Rituals on Dusk Urchins, building up to Corrupt and a big finisher like Ghastlord or Oona.
As for an invitational card, I'd give in to my inner Johnny and make something like the following:
...And You'll Miss it
Enchantment, 1WW
Whenever a creature attacks, it's controller may pay 1. If he or she does not, remove that creature from the game. Return that creature to play at the end of the turn.
I just dreamed it up this minute so forgive me if it's unbalanced, but it seems like a fun bit of rule-setting that will slow down aggro decks and allow for shenanigans with 187 dudes and reveillark-style evoke dudes.

Dragons?! Stop day-dreaming, of course they don't exist.

Card I would design...
I've always been partial to Spellshapers. Let's see:
Sic Dela, the World Destroyer 2UB
Legendary Creature-Human Spellshaper
BB,t, discard a card: Put 3 -1/-1 counters on target creature.
UU,q,: Draw a card.
2/3
Oh yea, he seems really powerful (okay, he is) but would be constructed worthy? I like it because it has a way to replenish "spells" unlike any other Spellshaper. And it's nice because it fits with Shadowmoor's mechanics.
*Mayreturn*
I have some EDH cards and rare Magic basic lands (APAC, EURO, ARENA, etc) so message me if you're looking.

not that impressed with the croma mechanic unless the red one has to do with all red mana symbols in you deck HAHAHA.
Essence of Stinkweed Imp - 2B
Enchantment
Put Essence of Stinkweed Imp on top of your library: Target player sacrifices an attacking creature.
It would probably be toned down a lot and made white in development, but that is the card I would submit.
wonderful podcast as always, guys. listening everyweek has provided laughs as well as insight during a time when I should really be working. you guys keep me sane some days, seriously.
a card I would design if I won worlds:
name: Genocidic Homicide
casting cost :/b /b /3
destroy target creature. procede to go through target opponents library and remove all cards that share a type with it from the game.
"kill you? haha, no...we merely wish to bring you closer to yawgmoth. this way is the shortest"- Jack LaCroix, Urborg Shaman.
Thanks, Heroes of The Planes! You guys are great!
Actual Truth:
8 Swamp
4 Forest
4 Sunken Ruins
2 Reflecting Pool
3 Llanowar Wastes
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1 Pendelhaven
4 Dusk Urchins
4 Kulrath Knight
4 Wall of Roots
4 Leech Bonder
3 Grim Poppet
1 Midnight Banshee
3 Blowfly Infestation
4 Incremental Blight
3 Everlasting Torment
3 Scarscale Ritual
4 Flourishing Defenses
Single Banshee because singletons are tech.
