We got a great turnout this week. Not only that, but we got a really good field including a number of veterans of the game playing for their first time in ages. Also, the format turned out to be really fun! I'm not going to ban anything for next week. Partly, I don't think any one card deserved it. Also, I genuinely don't know what's good!
If you have the time, take a look at some of the matches this week. Quite a lot of them are really interesting and close. Many, many cards I thought I knew I had to click on to reread. Even then, I still missed at least one detail that turned out to matter!
4) Shogun17 - Black Lotus, Mogg Fanatic, Keldon Marauders, Recurring Nightmare, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale This deck was way better than your score makes it look. The trouble was that you rely on both resolving a Black Lotus and being able to keep your Enchantment in play whilst stepping through a Sorcery-speed combo. Most kinds of disruption spoiled your plan.
7) Catmurderer - Forest / Squirrel Nest / Earthcraft / City of Solitude / Aura Shards One of the faster combo decks, but could have been even better if City of Solitude had been something useful. Not needing the graveyard was clever and you were unlucky that this wasn't worth more points.
8) Promatim - Savannah / Erase / Erase / Loam Lion / Loam Lion Erase was an excellent choice. Loam Lion could have been anything and still got the job done in most cases, which might mean there was a better option.
9) Parsley - Pandemonium / Opalescence / Mishra's Workshop / Cloudstone Curio / Aura of Silence I love this deck! And it was very strong too, thanks to the power and versatility of Aura of Silence. Had Mishra's Workshop been Black Lotus you might have had the tempo to win the round.
11) zekeofevermore - Leyline of the Void / Oblivion Ring / Seal of Fire / Seal of Fire / Seal of Fire This is exactly the kind of deck I expected to see this round and I'm amazed you were the only player with either Seal of Fire or Leyline of the Void. Your deck was good for the reasons you would expect. Where it failed was that too many players came prepared for this sort of thing.

Resources
Rules
0. Overview
Five Card Blind (5CB) is a weekly Magic tournament, run entirely within this forum. To compete, players submit five-card decks which are played against each other. Scoring assumes optimal play, without randomness or concealed information.
1. Game Rules
1.1. Except for the changes described in these rules, games follow the rules of Magic.
1.2. Players' decks contain exactly five cards, which begin the game in hand. Players do not mulligan or sideboard.
1.3. Players' libraries begin the game empty. A player does not lose the game as a result of being unable to draw a card.
1.4. A random effect produces the result that least benefits the owner of the source of the effect.
1.5. Each player plays two games (one match) against each other player.
1.5a. Each player is the starting player once per match.
1.5b. If no player can win, the game is a draw.
1.5c. Games are played with perfect information.
1.5d. Games are played optimally; players attempt to win, draw, or extend the game – in that order.
2. Tournament Rules
2.1. Players submit their decks to the 5CB moderator.
2.1a. A player may submit multiple decks, but only the most recent deck is counted.
2.1b. An illegal deck is not counted. The removal of an illegal deck does not affect deck distribution (see Rule 2.4).
2.1c. The moderator determines the result of each match. Players may challenge results, but not after the results of the first round belonging to a new month have been posted (see Rule 2.5a).
2.2. Decks are subject to some restrictions.
2.2a. A player may not submit a deck that can – against any deck – win the game or force more than one card in an opponent's hand to change zones before an opponent's second turn.
2.2b. A player may not submit a deck that can't win both games of a match against at least one deck satisfying 2.2a and 2.2c.
2.2c. A deck may include any number of any card legal in Vintage (Type 1), with the exception of the following banned cards:
2.2d. A deck may include any number of any card that will become legal in Vintage upon release of a set that has been revealed fully and officially.
2.3. Points determine tournament standings.
2.3a. Players are ranked – first to last – in order of decreasing number of points.
2.3b. For each match, a player earns 3 points per game win and 1 point per drawn game. However, a player earns only 2 points for a split match (one win, one loss).
2.3c. A table of match results is posted each round. Its rows represent players and its columns represent opponents. Match results reflect the combined result of both games played in a match; 3 is a game win, 1 a drawn game, and 0 a game loss. 2 may be used instead of 3 to denote a split match. A player's points are listed at the end of his or her row.
2.4. In rounds of twenty or more players, players are divided randomly into equally-sized heats of n players, where n is the number of players divided by ten (rounded down).
For example, twenty-five players are divided into heats of twelve and thirteen.
2.4a. Except in the finals, a player only plays against players in his heat.
2.4b. The top four players of each heat advance to the finals, where they play again (with the same decks).
2.4c. Tiebreakers for advancement to the finals are as follows: number of matches in which a player wins both games, number of game wins, points scored against higher-scoring decks. If a tie is unresolved, the tied decks advance.
2.5. The player with the most POTM points over the course of a month is the Player of the Month.
2.5a. A month includes all rounds for which decks are due during that month.
2.5b. The top eight players – or more, if players are tied for the final spot – of rounds of less than twenty players, all players in rounds of eight or fewer players, and all players in the finals of rounds of twenty or more players earn POTM points according to their rank; The player with the highest score earns 8 POTM points, and each subsequent player earns one point less than the previous player, but can't earn less than 0 POTM points. Tied players earn equal points but are counted as separate players when calculating the points of other players.
Format: I <3 Enchantments
All enchantments cost one mana of any colour less to play for each complete turn played. If an Enchantment would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library instead.
Deck Submission Deadline:
Monday, February 13th, 10:00 pm GMT.
Submit your deck to bateleur.
Please use this thread to discuss any aspect of 5CB. Also, consider a subscription to 5CB. Subscribed players who have not already submitted a deck receive a reminder PM about two days before deadline. PM bateleur or Mogg to subscribe.

You're playing a deck that I consider running quite often during normals, but choosing it for I<3Enchantments was genius! I love how you were just like "eh, enchantments, who needs em."
I thought that I was clever to run a deck with zero enchantments, but I think you leveled me.

I'll be sad if people don't start calling The Chain Veil "Fleetwood Mac."
is listed at 0-6, and I believe it should be 6-0. Due to the fact that returning Recurring Nightmare to my hand is part of the cost, Promatim never receives priority with my Nightmare in play in order to Erase it.
Edit: I just went through a few more and I can force ties in a few more matchups.
When I go first, if he Foils my Lotus, then he loses his Tropical Island to cast Thallid, and my Tabernacle keeps his Spirit at bay. If he allows me to get Lotus down and then he casts Thallid, if he Dazes either of my creatures, then I can just use that as the graveyard target and still go off. If he Dazes my Nightmare, then I just wait a turn and go off. So he is forced to take the tie with the Foil.
When he goes first, if he plays Thallid and tries to Daze my Lotus, then he has no land in play to pay for Tabernacle and loses his Thallid. So he's forced to do nothing.
If he uses Foil (or Abolish), he loses the ability to pay for Tabernacle. If he doesn't use Foil, then when I go first, I cast all my stuff and beat him down changing out creatures once a turn, so he's forced to Foil.
Wow, I can't believe my deck did so well. I'm kind of annoyed at myself that I misinterpreted last week's banned list as part of the actual one, but nonetheless very excited about my deck's performance. Lesson learned.
6) gamermk - Reverent Silence / Bayou / Mishra's Factory / Duress / Presence of the Master
vs.
12) dasheiff - Chalice of the Void / Chalice of the Void / Black Lotus / Channel / Platinum Angel
is listed as 0-6 but should be 3-3 since Duress can just take Lotus leaving dasheiff without a way to do anything.
When I go first, I get down Mogg Fanatic, which keeps his Factory from being able to swing successfully.
You can't put damage on the stack and ping my factory to kill it anymore so unless I'm missing something, there's nothing stopping factory from just attacking you.
You can't put damage on the stack and ping my factory to kill it anymore so unless I'm missing something, there's nothing stopping factory from just attacking you.
wasn't expecting this many counters with the recycling ability available. I figured just having the quickest possible combo deck and being immune to spot removal would be enough
6) gamermk - Reverent Silence / Bayou / Mishra's Factory / Duress / Presence of the Master
vs
13) WhammWhamme - Energy Field, Oblivion Ring, Form of the Dragon, Foil, Island
It's 2-2, but I think it should be 6-0.
Regardless who goes first, I'm going to Duress his Foil. (or he'll counter Duress, either way, Foil is gone) That gets Energy Field into play which sets up the line of play of me killing it and dropping Presence and then factory wins it. Now, he can cast field and follow it up with O-ring on the field so that if I kill enchantments, it'll be a draw, but in this case... I won't kill enchantments. His field is gone and I can play Presence before he can ever play Form of the Dragon. So I win both games because he can't ever get the Form into play and he can't ever stop me from removing energy field.
Heh - I had him using Oblivion Ring on your Bayou... turns out it doesn't hit lands.

By the way, I'd like to claim that Foil was an attempt to meta-metagame. =)
(specifically that this and next week, counterspells are worthless against enchantments, but should thoroughly pwn anyone who relies on a non-enchantment - and it almost worked, too!)
By the way, I'd like to claim that Foil was an attempt to meta-metagame. =)
Aye, thats why I didn't change mine after I realized the new format.
I thought for sure I'd see Channel-Ulamog and Meddling Mage packages.
Ironically, either one showing up would have won.
his removal doesn't effect me, so the only relevant card here is leyline
so whenever one of my enchantment is sacked, there are two replacement effects and I get to choose witch one happens, In other words Leyline of the Void doesn't work in this format
616.1. If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected object's controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply, following the steps listed below. If two or more players have to make these choices at the same time, choices are made in APNAP order (see rule 101.4).
It has been pointed out to me that since this format's special rule involves a replacement effect, Leyline of the Void will not do what I and zekeofevermore assumed it would. This rule applies:
Quote from Comprehensive Rules »
616.1. ...which means in the context of 5CB that nothing gets exiled.
Your results were good enough that I would say it did work!

Hey man, can I borrow some points?
I'm just a little strapped right now.
I'll get you back later man, you know I'm good for it.
Its just this new format crept up on me, and I didn't see it comin.
I tried to save some points for a rainy day, but you know how it goes.
Listen dude, I just hand out the points, but they ain't mine. They belong to the man. You think I'd be working in a forum like this if I had those kind of points?

I think 7 beats 13 also. Foil won't do anything and the combo will go off.
I accept your other corrections, but this one seems wrong to me since I cannot see how you beat Energy Field.

I think Aura Shards and a few squirrels should do it.
If there is a problem of Aura Shards possibly getting exiled by O-ring, then squirrels could cause Aura Shards to hit itself instead... leading to replaying/destroying stuff next turn.

Results
1) bateleur - Runed Halo, Runed Halo, Runed Halo, Runed Halo, Subversion
I thought this deck might require a banning... but no, it turns out I brought a knife to a gunfight!
2) halinn - Nether Spirit, Thallid, Tropical Island, Foil, Daze
In a field full of enchantment hate and people trying to dodge enchantment hate, this was a great choice!
3) Error1 - Forest, Argothian Enchantress, Gaea's Touch, Gaea's Touch, Helix Pinnacle
Beautiful design - and the fastest combo in the field - but turned out to be vulnerable to a few too many things.
4) Shogun17 - Black Lotus, Mogg Fanatic, Keldon Marauders, Recurring Nightmare, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
This deck was way better than your score makes it look. The trouble was that you rely on both resolving a Black Lotus and being able to keep your Enchantment in play whilst stepping through a Sorcery-speed combo. Most kinds of disruption spoiled your plan.
5) Feyd_Ruin - Foil / Abolish / Tundra / Black Lotus / Ethersworn Canonist
Your deck was very disruptive in the early game, but the graveyard recycling really wrecked you.
6) gamermk - Reverent Silence / Bayou / Mishra's Factory / Duress / Presence of the Master
Thoughtseize exists! But who cares? In a field full of attempted Enchantment hate you had by far the best tech. Congrats on the win!
7) Catmurderer - Forest / Squirrel Nest / Earthcraft / City of Solitude / Aura Shards
One of the faster combo decks, but could have been even better if City of Solitude had been something useful. Not needing the graveyard was clever and you were unlucky that this wasn't worth more points.
8) Promatim - Savannah / Erase / Erase / Loam Lion / Loam Lion
Erase was an excellent choice. Loam Lion could have been anything and still got the job done in most cases, which might mean there was a better option.
9) Parsley - Pandemonium / Opalescence / Mishra's Workshop / Cloudstone Curio / Aura of Silence
I love this deck! And it was very strong too, thanks to the power and versatility of Aura of Silence. Had Mishra's Workshop been Black Lotus you might have had the tempo to win the round.
10) Mogg - Forbidden Orchard / Illusions of Grandeur / Leyline of Sanctity / Puca's Mischief / Thoughtseize
Fitting Thoughtseize into a combo deck was clever, but turned out not be be worth much due to the graveyard recycling. This was a problem because compared to the pure combo decks your kill was a bit slow.
11) zekeofevermore - Leyline of the Void / Oblivion Ring / Seal of Fire / Seal of Fire / Seal of Fire
This is exactly the kind of deck I expected to see this round and I'm amazed you were the only player with either Seal of Fire or Leyline of the Void. Your deck was good for the reasons you would expect. Where it failed was that too many players came prepared for this sort of thing.
12) dasheiff - Chalice of the Void / Chalice of the Void / Black Lotus / Channel / Platinum Angel
Excellent performance. By far the best of the decks which attempted to metagame. Have you done this before?
13) WhammWhamme - Energy Field, Oblivion Ring, Form of the Dragon, Foil, Island
Great performance and the best of the Foil decks. Energy Field was a smart choice since very few decks had answers to it.

Thanks for the comments on all of the decks. I love them for some reason.
Possibly some corrections coming too... duno. Fun round.
I'll do closer math later... but
I think 3v7 is a split. In one of the games 7 is able to put out Aura Shards before Helix can go off.
I think 7 beats 8 because of City of Solitude. Erase won't be able to do anything.
I think 7 beats 13 also. Foil won't do anything and the combo will go off.
Also, I must agree that this round was amazing, even from the perspective of the round I thought we were playing. The swell of players is great.

You're playing a deck that I consider running quite often during normals, but choosing it for I<3Enchantments was genius! I love how you were just like "eh, enchantments, who needs em."
I thought that I was clever to run a deck with zero enchantments, but I think you leveled me.
vs.
8) Promatim - Savannah / Erase / Erase / Loam Lion / Loam Lion
is listed at 0-6, and I believe it should be 6-0. Due to the fact that returning Recurring Nightmare to my hand is part of the cost, Promatim never receives priority with my Nightmare in play in order to Erase it.
Edit: I just went through a few more and I can force ties in a few more matchups.
2) halinn - Nether Spirit, Thallid, Tropical Island, Foil, Daze
listed as 0-6, should be 2-2
When I go first, if he Foils my Lotus, then he loses his Tropical Island to cast Thallid, and my Tabernacle keeps his Spirit at bay.
5) Feyd_Ruin - Foil / Abolish / Tundra / Black Lotus / Ethersworn Canonist
listed as 0-6, should be 1-4
If he uses Foil (or Abolish), he loses the ability to pay for Tabernacle. If he doesn't use Foil, then when I go first, I cast all my stuff and beat him down changing out creatures once a turn, so he's forced to Foil.
6) gamermk - Reverent Silence / Bayou / Mishra's Factory / Duress / Presence of the Master
listed as 0-6, should be 1-4
When I go first, I get down Mogg Fanatic, which keeps his Factory from being able to swing successfully.
12) dasheiff - Chalice of the Void / Chalice of the Void / Black Lotus / Channel / Platinum Angel
listed as 0-6, should be 2-2.
Angel dies to Tabernacle.
You can't put damage on the stack and ping my factory to kill it anymore so unless I'm missing something, there's nothing stopping factory from just attacking you.
Yup, my bad. I'm living in the past.
I did find one more correction though:
3) Error1 - Forest, Argothian Enchantress, Gaea's Touch, Gaea's Touch, Helix Pinnacle
listed as 0-6, should be 3-3.
When he goes first, the fastest he can win is on my 3rd turn. I go off on my 2nd turn and kill him.
Great performance and the best of the Foil decks. Energy Field was a smart choice since very few decks had answers to it.
vs
1) bateleur - Runed Halo, Runed Halo, Runed Halo, Runed Halo, Subversion
I thought this deck might require a banning... but no, it turns out I brought a knife to a gunfight!
Listed: 0-6
Should be: 2-2
Runed Halo x4 stops Form, but Subversion isn't immune to Oblivion Ring and can't kill a player with Energy Field and Form the Dragon activate anyway.

(specifically that this and next week, counterspells are worthless against enchantments, but should thoroughly pwn anyone who relies on a non-enchantment - and it almost worked, too!)
Aye, thats why I didn't change mine after I realized the new format.
I thought for sure I'd see Channel-Ulamog and Meddling Mage packages.
Ironically, either one showing up would have won.

11) zekeofevermore - Leyline of the Void / Oblivion Ring / Seal of Fire / Seal of Fire / Seal of Fire
listed as 0-6 but I think it's 6-0
his removal doesn't effect me, so the only relevant card here is leyline
so whenever one of my enchantment is sacked, there are two replacement effects and I get to choose witch one happens, In other words Leyline of the Void doesn't work in this format
...which means in the context of 5CB that nothing gets exiled.
Your results were good enough that I would say it did work!

These are both correct.
Why, what a splendid post!
You'll get your points from corrections at the same time as everyone else: when I update the round prior to putting the next one up.

Hey man, can I borrow some points?
I'm just a little strapped right now.
I'll get you back later man, you know I'm good for it.
Its just this new format crept up on me, and I didn't see it comin.
I tried to save some points for a rainy day, but you know how it goes.
What'a ya say man?
:no::no::no:

Listen dude, I just hand out the points, but they ain't mine. They belong to the man. You think I'd be working in a forum like this if I had those kind of points?
But what I can do is give you a little advice to get ahead in the old points game. Don't ever submit a Foil deck in a format where Force of Will is legal.

It exists, just not this year. I think you have until 2/13/12 to get the submission in.
You can assume anything you like without my consent... and in this case your assumption would be correct!
