So my friend recently acquired a fairly sizable collection and is now trying to sell it because he's decided he doesn't actually want to play much other than limited. The price is about $1700 ($1659 to be exact) and is pretty firm. I have looked through it, but have no idea of everything that's in it. Some of the highlights include:
Full x4 set of Zendikar Fetches
Playsets of most of the Ravnica dual lands
2 Jace the Mind Sculptor
Complete singleton sets of most of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor Blocks (think it's missing only Thoughtseize)
Lion's Eye Diamond
Playset of Korean Snapcaster Mage
A complete legacy Dredge deck minus LED and a complete Belcher deck minus Taiga
Complete sets of at least a half dozen other sets, including Tempest plus most of the Duel Decks and other Premium products.
Unknown but large quantities of other cards that are above bulk rare status - I'd say 2000 as a very conservative estimate, probably much more.
I realize this is a bit vague, but the cards are currently in storage and there are a lot of them, so I can't go through it more thoroughly. Do you think this is a good deal? My primary concern is the potential devaluation of a lot of the cards due to Modern Masters, as I would probably be looking to sell a lot of them, but could not begin to do do so until I return to the United States in August.

from just what you listed...
that's a really really good deal. i would snap by this.
i've brought collections for 2K before, so I can tell you. if you buy this, this is way better than I've ever done.
I agree with the others. This collection seems INSANE. Definitely grab it but thumb through the 2000 unknown cards to see if they arent just totally crap.
He might say he is pretty firm but if you flash 1500$ in his face he might cave
if he tries to sell it on ebay he's going to get hit with like a 100 fee plus shipping.
Never know- You're already at no if you dont even ask
trants is right. Try to low ball the seller at $1500 cash. Check for fakes cards though. The deal sounds to good to be true, thus I would ask how he got them.
Yea rereading OP and seeing your friend acquired it and now selling- i thought it was your friends collection. How well do you know this guy? haha
Seems kinda strange to drop that much and then say meh im going to play limited only.
Buyer's Remorse is a thing.
Especially if you have responsibility for other people's needs too.
Plus, "recently" can be up to several months or a year. If you went and bought a great collection full of modern stuff, got it home, built decks and then found out that you couldn't find a local store that frequently runs events in the format, and only really got to play the format a few times at large events when it's in season, you might find out that you'd rather have that money you sunk into it back for various formats and events you do have easier access to.
I could easily see someone playing modern for six months and then saying "You know, I'd rather just play limited"... especially when there's a giant question mark in the form of Modern Masters that may have a financial impact on the stuff you are holding on to.
Thanks for the advice everyone, consensus seems to be to buy it (and blow my MTG budget for the rest of the year).
To answer everyone's questions, he's a good friend who I play with regularly, so he's certainly not trying to rip me off with fake cards or anything. He purchased them from a serious collector who was quitting completely about 8 months ago, only to come down with a serious case of buyer's remorse. I've been through a fair amount of the stuff that isn't organized and it seems to be at least 1/4 cards that are a dollar or more (Worldly Tutor, Thraximundar. Stonehewer Giant, etc.).
Snap buy. You can turn around and sell the cards individually for more if you so desire. Sounds like a really good deal to me from what you listed. Playsets of tempest, lots of legacy staples, etc. etc. is super lucrative due to those cards never getting reprinted namely intuition, grindstone (can be reprinted, but not in a standard legal set for fear of what painter stone would do to modern if I had to guess.)

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."

Sounds like you could sell most of it and get your money back, while keeping the cards you want. Or just sell it all for what, 500 more? ...more rest of year Magic budget! Yay!
