Hey everyone, I'm around here right now because there's a contest going on right now on the WotC MTGO forums with the goal of making a user-designed UI update to Magic Online v3 to replace the default one.
From the OP:
Quote from "Argumentative Silence, MTGO Boards" »
One of the most overwhelming things being said on the forums is "you imagined a different place" you thought the world of magic was so much bigger. I am glad that so many have taken the time to tell everyone their side of the story. I have enjoyed reading all the different perspectives the past week. It really makes you realize that there are many different views on what Magic is to each and everyone of us.
Let your creativity flow some more. If you think you can visually change the way the rest of us see Magic here is your shot. We want you to really push what can be seen on V3. The sky here really is the limit. The only head start I will give you is this: The landscape of Magic is large and vast. Have fun and play with it.
The only rules are that the design must be original, and by submitting the UI modifications you allow any website to host those files for use by people wishing to modify their client.
Submissions are taken simply by posting to the WotC thread. (given at the end of this post) Submissions are open until June 15th.
Oh, and there's currently approx. $385 (converting tickets into cash) for the best design from community donations, with more donations likely coming. (I may pitch in ~200 tickets if I start actually seeing worthy designs, and I believe there are other people with the same thought process)
EDIT: Now up to $500 + 225 tickets, which is ~$700USD.
EDIT2: Tickets + Cash bring it in the $1000 range.
I'd suggest taking a look over on the WotC thread and looking into it a bit
Hmmm....i should probably post this on the MTG boards, and i'll probably get smacked for this but....
I have to be an MTGO member to enter don't i? To get the files and such? Or is there somewhere i can pull the graphics from to tweak with? Cuz it sounds like fun...
[/totallylost]
PS: i can't stop staring at your avi...it's got me in it's hold...:o
One thing though... what format is this submitted in as? I read the post on the WOTC boards, and it says something about you have you to share the code? Does that mean you have to program something? And what kind of files do they want? It's kind of vague, but the idea is neat.

It'd probably be worth it if you had a MTGO account, just so that you can test in screens and actually see how everything comes together. If you really just want the files, here's the MTGO download directory with all the MTGO files.

It seems like most people are planning on submitting a zip file containing the entire modified /Graphics/UI200610/ directory, which is where all the files seem to be.
There isn't any code to share, except if you're really ambitious and start modifying some of the few XML-formatted areas on the game; I didn't put that here, simply because I think the OP didn't quite know what that meant to some people.
There are DEFINITELY some people on these forums who should enter that. We have people here who can create some mind-blowing work. Thanks for sharing this with u8s bradleyjx!
I am the host of that contest on the WoTC forums. Thank you bradleyjx for bringing it here and showing the MTG Salvation community.
If you guys have any questions please feel free to ask. i will check this thread daily.
Prize edit = 1005$
Welcome to the forums NeoNetGen. Glad to have you aboard. That's quite a nice contest you have on your hands and I'm sure we'll have a few entries from this site for you. Thanks again!
Thank you for your interest in the contest. Currently Bubba and myself are working on making the rules more clear. Because the prize is already over 1000$. We have asked if the contributors mind breaking up the prize 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
Just a few updates if your not following the thread. This is the best player ran contest ever on MTGO. The more people involved the better the end result. Keep us updated.
I'm so glad to see people outside working on this. I'm currently pressing for more freedom with the UI at the moment. Next week Worth and company have a meeting and some of our issues will be addressed then I hope.
because lets face it, it would suck if someone creates something extremely spectacular but cant enter it becuase it violates the ToS.
Hmmm...i don't understand why each "page" you see in the end is made up of so many little images...seems rather pointless really...
A lot of it seems to be in just how the game handles scaling; some parts are scaled only horizontally/vertically, some are scaled normally, and some don't move. Yeah, it's horrible, but it's what's there.
Are .gifs allowed? Do they work?
I would guess that the extension of the image needs to be maintained, but I have no proof of that.
I take it once the submissions are done, a poll will be held to determine the "winner".
What exactly are we "skinning" in this? 0.o I read and re-read and re-re-read the post on the Wizard's board, but I still have no idea what I'd even be changing. I would like to find out, though, since it seems like it may be fun to enter.
Basically, it's a movement from some of the users to replace the image files that are in v3 with ones that would make the game easier to play with.
If you fool around in v3, there are backgrounds with colors that conflict with the text, there are backgrounds which just don't work, and some people just dislike the entire scheme.
So, by "skinning", it's just changing the contents of the folder that contains the images to make it look better.
I would have thought with so much...apparent.. artistic skills, that the good folk here on Salvation could eclipse the guys on WotC boards.
Looks like I was wrong... Neo, i owe you a beer...
Shame
