This all depends on what you're going for. If you just want to bulk up on Gatecrash for trading and getting playsets, a booster box may be best. If you're looking to get the right cards to make a few decks, you're better off trading for, and buying, singles online and at physical stores.

i suggest singles, but if you plan on acquiring a lot of gatecrash or need a cool storage box, other than the pimp holiday one, than a fat pack is nice. but if you know the deck you want, buy singles. cheaper in the long run and no pesky extras you can't get rid of
I just really like cracking boosters, and either way I'm not gonna buy like four 5 dollar cards for a deck, the only way I'm gonna get those cards is from boosters.
Also, what set probably has the most money rares? I'm hoping I might get a few to minimize the void in my wallet from buying a box.
Fat packs are never worth it unless you really want:
A pack of 80 basic lands
A sleeve that unfolds to reveal a (insert set name here) mural
A card box with art from said set,
Two deck boxes,
A player's guide with a complete visual encyclopedia of the set,
A learn-to-play insert'
A set Spindown life counter
If you don't care about any of the above filler, and you buy fat packs at $42 you're bascially paying $4.67 per booster pack, which is obviously more than the $3.33 you'd be paying at $10 tax included drafts. You also wont be guaranteed mythics, and booster boxes normally have 3-5 on average including 1 foil rare or mythic. Ideally you should be pre-ordering booster boxes at ~100 tax included, then packs will only cost you ~2.78 each, unless of course you're a store ordering directly from Wizards in which case booster packs should only cost you $2 apiece wholesale.
Anyhow, the best I can come up with myself is a game in the top 8 of a PTQ back during Urza block in which we were starting game 3 with time already expired, so the tiebreaker rule was that whoever had more life after 3 turns would win. And I lost to... healing salve.
The only time i buy fatpacks is if i pre-order because i get a deal on them. Other than that it is generally more efficient to buy singles or if you want bulk a box

I meant in money cards as well. I plan on flipping most money rares.
Then I wouldn't get a fatpack of either. Gatecrash as a set has a very low value to it, and prices are dropping fast, and RTR already had it's price depreciation due to the amount of it that was opened. Your odds of opening a valuable card in either are extremely low, although RTR still probably has a little higher chance

here's where i disagree. I opened three boxes of the stuff, kept what I needed and move everything else for legacy/modern staples.
If you move it today or this weekend (extremely liquid, you won't have any difficulties), you make out like a bandit for trades at least.
Out of let's say two boxes worth (since I kept some of the stuff), I traded into
You get a cool box a dice, and 9 random booster packs, it could be worth it or not.. it depends on your luck.
I've opened 100+ dollars value out of a fat pack before, and then watched my friend open all 25-50 cent rares in a fatpack with no foils/mythics at all. It's a dice roll either way you slice it.
I always buy a fat pack for each set. I love the box and being able to see each card in a nice booklet. Also the spindowns are pretty cool. ive got one of rtr, avacyn, dark ascension, 3 innistrad, m12, scars of mirridon, new phyrexia, m13. Good place to store extra cards and decks. 3 innistrad = no lillys snappy or giest
I love buying one fatpack from each set. Usually the box, dice, and card encyclopedia equate to $5 of the cost. That means its nice usually only buying just one. Therefore, its only worth it if you pull chase rares from it.
AVR is definitely full value, my favourite set of recent memory
I humbly disagree. Innistrad is a goldmine filled with diamonds that is laced with titanium. Liliana, enemy dual lands, snappy, geist of st. traft, plus a slew of other worthwhile rares. My money would go towards a box of this.
Fat packs are a good substitute if you can't make it to a prerelease.
They're also a good duel deck for a friend - each build a deck w/ 4 packs, whoever wins gets #9.

I like them but they aren't the best value
For GTC I told myself one booster box and one fatpack and that's it
I will splurge once Dragon's Maze hits
for me I ended up getting 2 fatpacks last set and the set before got 0 mythic in all 4
this set i got 1 fat pack. Got 1 mythic but the rest of the rares where 1-2$ rares
This mine was 30
It depends on what colours you are playing or looking into playing
Shocklands are all the rage right now (can't stand them myself)
Well both colour combinations are in Gatecrash and not in Return to Ravnica so it's an easy decision

1 orim's chant
2 vraskas
4 liliana of dark realms
1 misty rainforest
1 japanese thalia
1 stoneforge mystic
2 verdant catacombs
4 seachrome coasts
1 deathrite shaman
10 supreme verdicts
if you can move them this weekend... then its a great value.
