His drafts were horrible, its no personal loss for me really, but the CF guys always seemed so close-knit. How could he just go and crap on that friendship? That's just awful.
And that's why I'm inclined to hear channelfireball out about this. They were friends with the guy, and so I don't think they'd come out with this publicly like this very lightly.
EDIT: And yes, the better call to stay low profile was to take recent stuff that would move faster. The mistake seems to be making it so easy to find the exact missing inventory. Older cards would have been even easier to spot.
Go out to dinner with friends, eat food, and then play some type of game and 1 person picks up the check for everyone, people do it in all kinds of random and different ways, our group layed out everybody's credit card on the table and had the waitress pick out cards until one was left and he payed for it all haha!
Just a sad day for CFB. What I get from it is that CFB tried to contact him for a long timen, but when they don't succeed they're forced to do this. It will be a long time before I get used to someone else present the magic show.

I am petitioning for the removal of mythic rarity and boycotting overpriced singles. Sig this to join the cause for a more affordable Magic the Gathering.
Understand, Dredge is not really a Magic: The Gathering deck. When a card is playable in it, it doesn't mean it's a tournament playable card. It means it's playable in whatever crazy fantasy world that Dredge operates in.
To me, this screams like something far more darker was going on in this young man's life.
All the above posyers wondering why he'd choose such a limited variety, that would be likely noticed by staff and leave a footprint in the mud by selling the full quantities all at once on ebay? You are thinking along the right lines...
The answer, if true of course, is desperation.
We already noted that he had a decent career going, and had a pimped cube that represents he had no trouble with money up to that point.
He likely needed payment for something very quickly, likely to people who don't like to/won't wait for it and it's very likely that the risk of doing this to CFB (although at least somewhat calculated) outweighed the penalty for not coming up with money for...whatever he was into.
I wonder how kind of story we'll all get out of this in the end? Drugs? Cleptomania that went unnoticed for years? Gambling? Expensive fetishes?
Just a shame to see someone headed in the right direction in the Magic world take a nose dive in such an epicly lame fashion.
Yeah I don't think, based on his previous sales on ebay and his massive amount of feedback, this isn't the first time he had taken some of the CFB inventory. Just speculating

"His feet buckled the ground, his hands cut the wind to ribbons, and he was gone."
Says on his twitter page "Gambler" - he probably was selling cards to get money to gamble with. Gambling addiction is no joke. Magic the Gathering can basically be considering gambling if you think about it.
As many have said, just wow, this is quite shocking.
I was watching the ROE drafts he did with LSV just last night and now it turns out he was but lying sack of crap waiting to happen. I know I have no real stake in this, cause I'm not a part of the business, but I do feel a bit cheated as a viewer.
I know this is probably one of those "opportunity made a thief" cases, but it based on LSV's statement this wasn't exactly a mistake on TSG's part. He did steps to hide it and, all in all, it seems very premeditated.
It just blows my mind that someone in his position (meaning, seemingly living a comfortable life and making a living off of your hobby, in a sense) would ever do something like this. And for what? 7000$? As in, if someone had offered him 7000$ to lose his friends, his job, his face (among the magic community) and probably do some jail time, he'd been like "yup, that sounds well worth it to me".
And, if it was some financial emergency, like a medical operation or even gambling debts to the wrong people, wouldn't your first step to be to ask for help?
Just really really stupid. After all those years watching MagicTV, is all this really is true, I hope he goes to prison and never re-emerges. Mistakes are one thing, but what he did, required quite a few sequential and planned "mistakes" so I don't really feel any pity for him. (well, that's a lie, cause it's still TSG, or at least the guy we thought he was.) I feel quite torn about this. I can only imagine what his friends are going through.
At least we still have LSV.
It's a good thing you don't in any way affect the outcome of the legal system, since someone "going to prison and never re-emerging" for 7k$ value in theft seems EXTREMELY over the top :-/.
In all seriousness, TSG was a big reason why I got into Cube. The passion that he had when talking about it made me take the plunge. I'm both sad and shocked that a figure that I had respected had conducted himself in such a disappointing manner.
Extremely premeditated? Nabbing 50 cards worth of each of the most high-profile cards in the inventory and reselling them on Ebay using an account registered with your name and a PayPal account registered under your own name doesn't exactly scream "criminal mastermind" to me.

On average, Magic players are worse at new card evaluation than almost every other skill, except perhaps sideboarding.
Wow, crazy news. It had been a while since the last Magic TV episode, I was wondering why, but I never would have imagined that it would be because of something like this.
This is going to be hard for the CFB guys to recover from because he was their business guy. They have to be wondering if he pulled any other stunts during his tenure there. Beyond that, who's going to run the booth at GenCon if everyone's going to be playing? And that's not even examining the emotional consequences of a friend's betrayal.
I wish them luck, though. And citynoise, you're hilarious.

I doubt it, he has a foiled out cube. Most foiled cubes are worth anywhere between 10-40k depending on the cube. So needing emergency money is BS, could have just as easily sold his cube. If he stole it, then it was just normal everyday thievery.
Mayhaps Magic wasn't the most addictive thing he was into?

We never know what's going on in people's lives, but there's a range of things in this world starting with gambling and going through to much worse things which can cause seemingly rational people to take stupid, criminal risks. It seems highly unlikely to me that this was simply motivated by greed, any rational criminal could see that the EV of this action wasn't positive. Either way, a real shame...
Like everyone else, I was shocked and disheartened by the announcement. But thinking about some of the recent magic tv episodes, it kinda makes sense.
Before you make up your mind about all this, hear me out.
over the past few months since lsv left, I've noticed Tristan becoming more and more jaded and cynical, likely because of the low-quality co-hosts he's had to work with recently. Between martells incoherent rambling and conleys dickishness (on-screen), TSGs been carrying the show, and he knew it.
TSG just got married, and weddings tend to be expensive. And I don't know where you guys are getting the idea that making online videos for a card shop makes bank, but as someone who knows first-hand that all card shops have very narrow profit margins, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess he was making less than your average attorney.
Maybe TSG asked CFB for a raise and they were forced to say no, a detail that would not have been included in LSVs report. That leaves tristan in a pretty rough spot. I don't know TSGs educational background, but maybe it isnt one that's especially conducive to finding a "real job" in a snap. Which leaves TSG with two choices: go back to school and spend more money, or stay underpayed at CFB and go bankrupt.
TSG took choice number 3 and got burned.
I hope Tristan writes a reaction to this so we can get both sides of the story. I don't condone what he did, but I also don't think it's appropriate to condemn as an evil sith mastermind without knowing all the facts. Either way, I hope he finds forgiveness.
Yeah if he was doing that I think it's for a shameful reason that he couldn't just ask for help on too. Either a gambling debt or drug money probably. I have it on good authority that the vast majority the CFB pros do cocaine so.... maybe ran into a drug lord and who knows what

Go out to dinner with friends, order what you want, knowing 1 person has to pick up the tab via some random selection method.

If he did do these things he probably started smaller and the theft grew over time as he gained confidence in his ability to go undetected.
I don't always post about Rafiq of the Many, but when I do, I cardlink to the original artwork, and not the supplementary product version.

Looks like there will a lot less theft than expected at these events.
Joking aside, I feel really bad for LSV. Seems like such a great stand-up guy and to be betrayed is pretty crushing.
